"I know it's been a long time. I served in the same unit with you and didn't know you very well. But I did have the honor and privilege of getting to hang out and get to know you a little better the night before we deployed. And then after that night you went your own way and I went mine. I have never forgotten. Mrs. Thomas, your son was a great young man. He was very proud to serve and a dedicated soldier. I wish that I would have had the chance to get to know him better than what I did. Not a day goes by that I don't think about that night that we sat around drinking a few beers and talking. Thomas, as long as I am I alive, I will never forget!!!!"

"Adam and family,
I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend while everyone is spread accross the nation. One of these days soon I will be down to visit with you again. You and the family are never forgotten, and always missed.

Memorial Day not just parades

By PAUL SASSONE

For most of us, Memorial Day is a day off and a parade. But Memorial Day also is my Uncle Vincent. He was a pilot killed over Sicily in World War II.

I really don't know anything about him. My family doesn't talk much about him. He is a wound that hasn't healed for more than 65 years.

What kind of person was he? What were his favorite books? Did he like Humphrey Bogart, too? What career did he want? How tall was he? Who was he?
I'll never know. I would doubt that he ever existed, except for a few bits of flotsam he left before he disappeared from the surface of life.

I once found a copy of a Maywood Herald from World War II that contained a Gold Star Honor Roll. This was a page of names and photographs of men from Maywood killed in the war. Uncle Vincent's picture is on that page. He's right before Tommy Edmonds and right after Robert Taylor. The page is framed and hangs in my office.

And I remember when my grandmother was alive there was a glass case in the corner of her living room. Lovingly displayed in the case was the Purple Heart my grandmother had received in exchange for the son she sent to war.
There were photographs of Uncle Vincent. He was a slim young man, boyishly handsome with the bright crooked smile all pilots seem to have. In several of the photos he is wearing a leather flying jacket and a white scarf. There were photos of Uncle Vincent at the controls of a two-seater training plane; Uncle Vincent atop a camel in front of the Great Pyramid.
And that's about it. That's most of what I know.

No, I know some other things about him.

I know he never knew that Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan (Ronald Reagan?), George Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama were presidents.

I know he never had children.

I know he never was able to test his abilities in a career.

I know he never knew who won World War II.

I know he never watched television.

I know he never saw a jet plane.

I know he never watched men walk on the moon.

I know he never got to talk to me.

And I know I never got to talk to him.

There were 405,399 Uncle Vincents in World War II. And thousands and thousands of Uncle Vincents in other wars.

For the families of men killed in war, Memorial Day is not just a day off from work. It is pain that may not end after more than 65 years. Or ever."

-Dave"

"Another August 31 has come and gone but the hole in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved Adam Thomas is still there. Family and friends honored Adam at the Soybean Festival in the big town of La Plata, MO last weekend. A float in Adam's memory was surrounded by members of the Patriot Guard Riders and led by his Grandpa Jerry, Uncle Kevin, and little Cousin Dalton...riding their motorcycles. Adam's dad drove the tractor that pulled the float. The float carried either a real member or a person representing a member of each of the branches of the military. Two local coastguardsmen and a sailor were absolutely honored to be asked to ride on the PFC Adam Thomas float. The float also carried the traditional guns, boot, and helmet display to represent a fallen soldier. The float earned a first place ribbon in the float division and in the overall category. About 100 people proudly sported their "Adam t-shirts" on Labor Day. Adam's cousin-in-law, Nikisha, and his Grandpa Jerry are due a great big thanks for putting this all together - I know they did it because they love and miss Adam SO VERY MUCH...as do we all. God bless all those who miss Adam Thomas and please continue to pray for our soldiers.

"Every day I try to live my life to the fullest. As SFC Dunn said, "potential is common, yet commonly wasted." I am trying to do my best to reach that potential, fully knowing that you never will be able to. Not a day goes by that I don't think about you and your "awww horseshit." It's ironic, it was my job to teach you. Now through your sacrifice, it is you who have tought me. I'll never forget. Rouge for life."

Thank you Adam, and thank you to your parents, I know they are proud of you."

"How ironic that Mother's Day and Memorial Day are both in May! This weekend is for ALL who served and ALL who died defending our great country. I remember you every second of everyday, but for Memorial Day I remember you as not only a great young man but a fine Soldier, who has made us all proud. You have sacrificed your LIFE!! If you should read this "Please REMEMBER Some gave ALL!!!! I Love you ADAM LEE"

I find myself again sitting here today and with every song that comes on the radio I think of you, it paralizes my thoughts with nothing but memories of you - the smiles and tears come all at once. We planted the Memory Tree at grandma and grandpa's last night - it was awesome and a symbol that you will always be alive and growing with us.

"My name is Emily and I am the wife of a Soldier currently deployed in support of OEF. I stumbled across your site and I want to thank you for the sacrifice that you and your son have made for our country. I can't imagine the loss that you must feel, but be consoled knowing that your son died in the most honorable way an American could ever die. I will pray for your family, God bless you."
Emily of Fort Campbell, KY

"I know Adam doesn't "read" our messages, but doesn't it just feel like you are talking to him when you leave a message on this site? So, with that in mind, I want Adam to know that we know he is 'watching' the La Plata Bulldogs just as he mentioned in one of his last letters to his Aunt Lori. The Bulldogs are doing alright this season, headed to the 2A District Championship Saturday night, March 4, which also happens to be Jordan's birthday (Adam's cousin who absolutely adored him). We might need an angel on the rim, think you can do that from up there?

Hey, love to all who loved Adam Thomas. He is forever our hero."

"My name is Sgt. Heath Squires. I was Adam's team leader in when he and Chad were killed, and David was wounded. I was injured on the same mission. Only mine was of my on clumbsiness. I had to be extracted. I was not with them on the 31st. I have really never forgivin myself. I spent many days and hours with Adam on top of those mountains. In a sniper position you dont really consider the days, every minute is an eternaty.Motionless, hungry, thirsty, exhuasted, and contantly expecting the worst and hoping for the best. It takes speacial kind of person with emense dedication and persaverance. Adam was such a man. You really get to know the men on your team. Adam was an excelent soldier. Dedicated to his task, never complaining or questioning his leaders. Instead, learning and listning. He was shaping up to be a fine leader. He loved his family. We often spoke of our mothers and the impact they had on our lives. I had the great pleasure of escorting Mrs. Thomas(Hello Mrs thomas) to our Battalion ball after our return to the states. I was so nervous that night not really knowing what to say. But I owe Adam so much more than that. I am currently deployed to Iraq. Adam is always over my shoulder making sure I take care of my men and teach them as much as I can. Even in death he is still doing his part. I only hope I can honor his memory, by sending as many of these bastards to what ever god they choose.
God bless all of you who take the time to honor our fallen and god bless you Mrs Thomas."

"My name is Cameron Schilling. I am a college student from central Illinois. I am the first generation of my family not to serve his country. I am extremely grateful for the sacrifice you and your loved one has given for the United States. I am disappointed by the way the news media has covered this war and the deaths of our youth. The media has stopped listing the names of the soldiers killed in Iraq and people only talk about the soldiers when we reach a specific milestone in deaths. If you just started watching the news today you would not even know there is a war going on. Partisan politics have replaced coverage of our young generation who have traveled to a foreign land in the name of the United States. Whether you believe the war in Iraq is wrong, right, justified or not everyone should pay even just a little more attention to what these young men and women are sacrificing. This is what I would like to do. I want to do my part in honoring these soldiers and their memories. Along with being a college student I am also a budding artist. I draw pencil portraits of local people in my community. I want to offer a pencil portrait sketch to the immediate family of every Illinois soldier killed in Iraq or Afghanistan. Please contact me at cameronschilling84@hotmail.com."

"Adam you made the news and papers again last Wed. as they did a story on the man who took care of you for your journey home. You have made an effect on him that he and his wife wear a silver braclet they made with Your name on it. We've emailed and I would be honored to meet them. I was with several of the wounded that came to Chicago, most will return to the hospital for more treatment and how greatful they were to be alive, yet their eyes told a different story. I was so proud to listen to their stories, but their smiles were missing. That was the hardest, because I could'nt imagine you without that laugh and smile. Everyone mentions that always if they have known you long or just met you. You don't even know how much you have given all of us. I would give anything just to touch you one more time, until that day your smile will forever be etched in my life and grateful to God for giving me YOU!! Our family will never be complete till we are together again. I miss you so Adam. I love you"

"Happy Veteran's Day. On this Veteran's Day, as in 2003 and 2004, PFC Adam Thomas will be honored at the Veteran's Day Ceremony in La Plata, MO. Along with Adam, we will honor our living veterans such as Adam's grandpa, Jerry, and his cousin, Joe, and several of his uncles and friends from La Plata. Leon Shears will sing, Peace Keepers, the song he wrote in memory of Adam. The bible says, Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. The bible also says, Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. On August 31, 2003, Adam Thomas gave his life for his friends. This sacrifice will never be forgotten by anyone who ever witnessed the smile of Adam Lee Thomas."
Aunt Tabitha of La Plata, MO

"This is a note to Seth, first I want to thank you for remembering my son, as you know as THOMAS.As Adam's mom I think he was the greatest son, but we all know Adam was quite the little party animal but he always had that southern drawl and a smile. I don't think I ever seen him hurt anyone!. He used to be afraid of his own shadow but when he became a sniper I even wondered how this sweat, loving, funny guy got the guts to be on those Mountains in Afghanistan and want to do this. I remember telling him on a phone conversation " stand in the back and never never volunteer and promise me to come home" He promised, said he loved me and talked about the weather, cuz he said he couldnt tell me anything or he would have to kill me. We both laughed. He didn't have to prove anything and this I know for fact, no matter what happened Aug 31, 2003 Adam and all the others out there on those Mountains proved to be brave and dedicated to get the animals who attacked our USA! Seth glad your on leave from hell, I pray for your safety and as an American I thank you for you service and as a Mother thanks for being a friend to my Adam."

"Just to be sure that my message is clear, I want to thank Misses Thomas and Misses Modes for communicating on my blog. I also want Misses Thomas to know that the story is there as a reminder as are the comments on this website and they are communiques on the event as understood through many persons and their perspectives. Misses Thomas, please know that though your grief is troubling, have some peace of mind that he was a good man and you have nothing to fear or trouble yourself over on his behalf. Thank you again for producing such a fine son and he was a privelage to have around."
Seth Lombardy of On Leave from Iraq

"After visiting Seth's blog I was contacted by Mrs. Modes, PFC David Modes' mother. David was the surviving soldier of the ambush on August 31, 2003. She let me know that Adam did not endure a 45 minute struggle as indicated in Seth's blog. I thank her for allowing me to push that thought out of my head as it hurts so much to think that Adam or Chad suffered for a minute. I am confident that Adam is in good hands now and how or why he got there is of little importance at this point...we can't change what happened on Aug 31 so we need to find peace in knowing we will see Adam once again."
Aunt Tabitha (Thomas) Sawyer of La Plata, MO

"Visit Seth Lombardy's blogspot at sethllombardy.blogspot.com and click on pics-from-gan-january-2004-firebase and the scroll to bottom to find the memoriam for Adam and Chad. It has a little bit of information that I hadn't heard yet. Unfortunately, it's something I didn't want to hear either. I will try to focus on the fact that Adam is now safe in the arms of God. Thanks, Seth."
Aunt Tabitha of La Plata, MO

"What wonderful messages have been left in honor and memory of Adam. Anyone who ever laid eyes on Adam knows that the memory of his smile will keep us all going until we meet again. A friend of Adam's family has written and professionally recorded a song in memory of Adam. It is called Peace Keepers by Leon Shears of La Plata, MO. The song is being played on country and AM stations in Northeast Missouri. We are so proud of Leon and this song he has given us to honor and remember Adam. You can email me at tsawyer@pfh.org for more information about the song."
Aunt Tabitha of La Plata, MO

"I remember this young man as a mere boy, bounding down the hallways of the LaPlata High School. I never imagined any of the "kids" I attended school with in my youth would someday be known as Fallen Heroes.
Adam grew into a young man, and felt the call to Serve and Protect our country. He was fighting for our Freedom, and the right to live in peace, serenity, and safety.
I grew up in a military family; my mother was sent to Saudi Arabia in Desert Storm. As a child, that was the most traumatic time of my life, and I couldn't begin to comprehend how devastating it would have been to be told that my mom would never come home.
To Adam's family, I'm so sorry you all knew that moment.
I recognize a number of names of the people writing to remember Adam, and I hope the peace in your hearts in remembering his smile, his laugh, and his bravery will keep pulling all of you through the moments of sorrow.
The moment of sacrifice is over for Adam, he's God's defender now. Be proud, family and friends of PFC Adam L. Thomas! God Bless"
Tanya Calef of Kirksville, MO United States of America Oh Yeah!

I love you each and every minute of every day. I treasure the memories and the laughter. You always make me smile, Take care of yourself til we meet again.

"Our Soldier Angel Adam,
Two years have passed; loving memories of you will live on within our hearts. There is a piece written by Steve Newton, author of "Old Sergeant", dedicated to you, Chad, and Evan, now circulating within the cyber world. Adam, you will always be be held dear in our hearts and mind. This is for you:

TIMES GONE BY

Dedicated to:

Adam Thomas.....KIA/Afghanistan/August 31, 2003 - OEF

Chad Fuller..........KIA/Afghanistan/August 31, 2003 - OEF

Evan O'Neill.........KIA/Afghanistan/September 29, 2003 - OEF

There was an elderly man driving down the Interstate, doing a
sedately 50 MPH. He seemed unaware of the looks he got as car after
car passed him. He happened to be the first one who saw, off the
side of the road, a terrible accident that had just occurred.
Pulling over to the shoulder as best he could he made his way down
the embankment to the smoldering vehicle.

As he arrived he saw a young family trapped inside and he worked
frantically to get the door open. Finally with one last pull, using
all his strength, the door opened and he started to pull the family
out. His chest was on fire with pain but he could not stop. He
finally pulled the last person out. A little girl with a terrible
cut on her forehead.

As he tried to stop the bleeding he had a hard time holding the
piece of cloth to her head because of the terrible scars on his
hands. The para-medics arrived and roughly pushed the old man out
of the way.

"Sir, you need to return to your vehicle and leave this to the
professionals."

As the old man, holding his chest, climbed back up the hill:

A loud blast. Fire and smoke and the screams of people caught in
the explosion. Grabbing his med kit he ran directly into the fire
of the burning helicopter. Men were trapped inside but he wrenched
the door open and dragged the men out one by one.

As the Huey burned in the background he administered first aid
despite serious burns on his hands. His citation read: For bravery
and professionalism above and beyond the call of duty, and having
saved the lives of---------------.

An old man pulled up to the quick shop to buy a pack of cigarettes,
when he noticed several young men dressed in gang colors robbing the
store. He only had the use of one arm but he calmly walked in and
told them that they were all under arrest. They laughed so hard
that they did not notice the police arrive.

After their arrest, an officer told the old man that he had
needlessly placed his life in danger and that he could be arrested
for interfering. As the old man climbed back into his car:

He heard the sound of gun fire. Pulling his .45 he ran directly
toward his fellow Military Police officers that were exchanging
gunfire with a terrorist they had stopped at a check point. Seeing
an officer down, he covered him with his own body, despite taking a
round through his arm.

His citation read: For bravery in the line of fire and placing his
life in danger to protect his fellow soldiers-----------.

An old man sat in his porch swing talking with his grandchildren.
He was always considered the "kook" of the family and the kids had a
good time making fun of him. They would make faces and throw food
at him while he told his rambling stories. One piece of candy hit
the old man on the side of his head:

"Then, while we climbed up the sand at Omaha Beach, my best friend
was hit in the head. I dragged him to a rock but I don't think he
made it. I continued forward with my platoon and when we got bogged
down by machine gun fire, I got so mad at just sitting there,
watching as my friends were being chewed to pieces, I finally got
up, grabbed all the grenades I could carry and charged up the hill.
Killed a bunch of the Krauts that day I tell ya."

When all his grandchildren had left, the old man went to his study
and sat by the fire. Above the mantel was framed the Silver Star
for bravery.

An elderly women pulled into the handicapped parking space at Wal-
Mart and had a rough time getting out of her car. As she was using
her cane to walk into the store, several young people began to jeer
her for taking a space so close to the store, while they had to walk.

She ignored them and continued on:

The young nurse ignored the mortar rounds dropping around her as she
tried desperately to evacuate her wounded. She loaded man after man
inside trucks until there were none left. As she climbed aboard the
last truck, a piece of shrapnel pierced her leg to the bone.

It would bother her the rest of her life.

The old man sat all by himself in the nursing home. No one ever
came to see him and he had not said a word in years. He was
confined to a wheelchair but never asked for assistance from
anyone. He could feed himself, and relieve himself, so the nurses
looked upon him as an ideal resident. He was no trouble at all.

The old man had been this way for as long as anyone could remember
and even on holidays he would sit and stare off into space. Every
so often he would shiver as if cold. He could be found most days in
the home's chapel, praying.

Finally one day the old man died. No one claimed his body and no
one mourned him. The were loading him into a hearse for burial in
the city cemetery, when a large convoy of military vehicles arrived.

Surprised, residents of the home looked on as an Army General came
in and asked for the body. He was to be buried at Arlington under a
stone engraved with the Christian Cross.

And under that, the symbol of the Medal of Honor.

"In Loving Memory"

Thanks for all you've done
I've missed you for so long
I can't believe you're gone
You still live in me
I feel you in the wind
You guide me constantly

I've never knew what it was to be alone, no
Cause you were always there for me
You were always there waiting
And ill come home and I miss your face so
Smiling down on me
I close my eyes to see

And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me

I carry the things that remind me of you
In loving memory of
The one that was so true
Your were as kind as you could be
And even though you're gone
You still mean the world to me

I've never knew what it was to be alone, no
Cause you were always there for me
You were always there waiting
But now I come home and it's not the same, no
It feels empty and alone
I can't believe you're gone

And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me

I'm glad he set you free from sorrow
I'll still love you more tomorrow
And you will be here with me still

And what you did you did with feeling
And You always found the meaning
And you always will
And you always will
And you always will

Ooo's

And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me"

"Adam it's almost two years now since you left, and you are missed more every day. When you were transfered to the "Lost Battalion" up in heaven our son Evan wrote us as to how upset he was and that he would mourn your loss. Little did we or he know that less than a month later on 29 Sept he would once again join your ranks. Just wanted you guys to know that we back here we will continue the mission and will not let you be forgotten or let you have died in vane. You are all HEROS and your cause was just. Thank you for sharing yor life with us , rest in peace and save some MREs and a soft spot to sit for us old soldiers."

"Adam,
I am haunted by the site of your stone I almost dread it, Even with my faith I don't understand it and mostly I don't believe it when I read your name. Yet I find comfort being there where we laid you to rest almost 2 years ago. Oh Baby how I wish it werent true. See you soon

"Thank you Vince, I was at the Freedom run and yes what an honor the memorial wall, and the run it self is and always will be. I know Adam loved it and was truely honored by all who rode and attended. Alot of people who knew Adam were looking for his tags and now I know that you have them and will wear them with pride in my sons name. He is a great spirit. Thank you for remembering my son PFC. Adam Lee Thomas , his greatful mom."
Ellen Thomas of Burbank, ILLINOIS

"My name is Vince. I recently attended a benefit ride in Illinois in which about 20,000+ motorcycle riders rode to help raise money for the new "Middle East Conflict Wall". The wall is located in Marseilles, Illinois, right on the bank of the Illinois River. The money the run raises helps in the maintenance of the wall and the new names that will eventually have to be added. You can find more info at ILFREEDOMRUN.ORG . When registering to go on this run, all riders received a commemorative dog tags with a fallen soldiers name, rank, age and which conflict they were lost in. I am proud to say that I received OEF Army Pfc. Adam L. Thomas and will wear it with pride. He made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. With the help of the Illinois Freedom Run, He will never be forgotten, nor should he ever be. I currently have two friends in the ARMY who are serving in Iraq as I write this letter. I can only hope to never see their names added to this wall, but realize that they know the risk and are proud to serve, to protect you and me. I hope you will be proud to know that "OEF Army Pfc. Adam L. Thomas" is not forgotten."

"Adam I have a favor to ask of you, Since you are so close to our Lord, If you could ask to protect Chris's son Pierce and Patty's two sons in Irag. On mothers day Pierce called from Irag and that made Chris so happy Everyone was crying and I know they were all feeling sorry for me, but you are safe and I know noone can hurt you every again, so I ask you to do your best and bring them all home safe, the family is still grieving over you and another fallen soldier in our family would be: Well you know, So I hope you and the Lord Jesus hear my prayers. I love you"

"Dearest Adam;
Wow what a busy month this has been and continueing to be I cant believe all the wonderful things that have been sent to me to honor you. Everyone has been so helpful helping me find some peace. What a fine young man you have become, May 20 is the Ball in Drum, they have called me and sent the invitation then May 26 they are honoring you and the other fallen soldiers with a plack in Memorial Park in Drum. That will be the hardest. I know you will be with me. Memorial Weekend is no longer picnics it truly has a different meaning. The parade in Chicago that I have taken you so many times will have a place for the Goldstar mothers, I have shared stories with so many families who are going thru the same pain. Because of you I have met such wonderful friends. Monday the 30th they will honor you here in Burbank but I will be attending the Memorial with you in Abraham Lincoln National Cememtey. This year the Goldstar Mothers will be laying the Wreath in all your honors. That will be such a proud moment. For you and all the men who layed down their life for our Freedom. The memorials continue into June. God you would love the Freedom Run. All the Harleys, everyone is emotional you could feel the love for our Country. You will never be forgotten because the great Americans in our great Nation will be forever Thankful. Thanks for bringing me peace when I sleep and Pride when I awake. P.S. Cubbies not so great this year maybe you could head over to the Wrigley to catch a game instead of listening to everyone cry. Love ya Little Man."

"I really appreciate all of the wonderful messages everyone has left for Adam and his family. I visit this website often and it just gives me such good feelings to know that Adam will never be forgotten. Dealing with the loss of a young loved one is so hard and everyone handles it differently. Adam's family and friends are not the only ones going through this agony. Please continue to pray for the families of fallen soldiers and for those still serving us. I hope each and everyone of them, fallen and still fighting, are as loved as Adam was and will forever be. A family friend wrote a song after Adam passed and it says...Blessed are the peacekeepers they say, they'll be there to lead the way, when we all go home someday, blessed are the peacekeepers they say. They'll be there to lead the way, when we all meet God someday, blessed are the peacekeepers they say. (written by Leon Shears)

I'll see you there, Adam"

"Remember, it is the Soldier, not the reporter Who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the Soldier, not the poet, who has given use the freedom of speech. It is the Soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protestor to burn the flag. Adam was one of those soldiers. There are so many others as well. Please pray for all who are currently serving our country and for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom."

"Today is May 9, 2005. I just submitted the winners of the Adam Thomas Memorial Scholarship to our school counselor and we both had tears in our eyes. Your Aunt Tab made the certificates and they are awesome - your smiling face is right on the front and that is pretty much what got us teary-eyed, but with those tears we both smiled with pride and honor as well. As the saying goes: And his soul marches on. - ALWAYS!
Love ya - Aunt Lor"
Lori Thomas Smith of La Plata, MO

"As I pulled up this page, the song "I Can Only Imagine" is playing on the radio, a song that was played at one of the two funerals that was held to honor Adam. I think about the song and then I think about the dreamer in Adam and how much he accomplished in his 21 years. I think about the letters that we received from Adam, how he said he was going to buy a motorcycle or maybe a new truck, settle down and have some babies!!! How in every letter after he had been home for a visit it would state : so what's the word about me back home, what are they saying I did when I was home - he just loved the whole excitement - well Ad I want to tell you that everyone has talked about you and read about you and it hasn't been small town news baby - your name has been in TIME magazine, on TV and newspapers all over, on T-shirts, memorial walls, websites, and most of all in the hearts of people, loved ones and strangers all over. Kind of like your song, Hey now your're an All Star!! I often can't sleep at night just thinking things about you from way back to when I babysat you living in Biggs Tr. Ct. to the night you all pulled away in the moving truck to Chicago, to the time I spent with you and your family in Chicago, from the days of the little tan Ugo to your Senior prom here in La Plata! It has all inspired me to write all kinds of things: poems, letters, readings, speeches. I remember you wearing hole in your favorite khaki Unionbay shorts, that grandma tried to throw away but you dug out of the trash and Jordan wore more holes in them and I still see them sitting on top of his speaker upstairs!
I simply can think of something about you every day, with every song, or every friend of yours I see, or every picture I look at. I know everyone that knew and loved you could say the same thing, you were blessed to have so many friends and family no matter where they lived or where they were from. Through this all you have given us so many memories and opportunties to meet others and make friends with those that knew you or those that have lost their loved ones as well. In your life and your death you have given this family and world so much , it is not even possible to complete that in words that people would understand. You remain forever in my heart, prayers, thoughts, dreams. All my love, Aunt Lori"
Lori Thomas Smith of La Plata, MO

"Adam was so loved and loved so many that he was honored in Illinois and Missouri. How awesome is that! I am so thankful we were able to honor him in La Plata because he had so many young friends that would not have been able to travel to Chicago and I feel it would have left an even bigger hole in their hearts if they were not given this chance to say goodbye. If it is my previous email that someone is correcting by stating where Adam's funeral and burial were, please understand I was not trying to get across the point that his funeral was in La Plata, but more importantly that he acknowledged that Jesus Christ is his Lord and Savior. I hope knowing this about Adam will bring peace to all who knew him and to those believers who will get the opportunity to meet him one fine day."
Tabitha (Thomas) Sawyer of La Plata, Missouri

"To clear up a statement made "Adam's funeral and burial are in the State of Illinois" he is buried at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Illinois!!"

"Just wanted to write a quick note about how great of a man Adam was. He was an amazing soldier. My name is James raymodn and was stationed at shkin with adam. He was a great guy who loved to have a good time. He was very tough and after escorting his mother around after the unit returned i realized where the stregth came from. Im out of the millitary now and keep in contact with dave modes who was also wounded. Theres not a day that goes by that i dont think about what happend over there and wish that we would have gotten out there quicker so we could have done more. You lived your life and left life as a hero."

"Today is April 17,and not a day goes by that I don't think of you Adam. I try so hard to only think of the good times but no matter what, I cannot erase that one day that we got the news. It was like living in a nightmare and we would all wake up, but we didn't. You are my hero,You brave little soldier! I know you are keeping a close eye on all of us..."

"Today is April 14th,2005, and I remember and Miss Adam everyday, there as diffently been a big hole in my heart since he's been gone, and diffently a big hole in our family's heart as well.

"I remember Adam as a small smiling boy who loved the small town of Laplata Mo. This boy grew up to be a man who stood up for us all. Some are not aware of the personal courage it requires to go where Adam went and do what Adam did! Adam was killed on my 70th birthday in 2003 and I of course will never forget that year and date. Adam fought for our freedom and privileges that we enjoy. I truly hope to be with you one day Adam You are sorely missed by all.

Your Uncle Patrick Thomas-Zachary, Louisiana"

"Today is April 14th, 2005, words cannot express what I have felt when I read all the wonderful things to Adam and our family, my tears will not even allow me to finish typing. Ad - Love you and think of your huge smile every day, all the glory to you, you are my "Superstar", to speak of that song you loved to hear on the radio. I will have to finish this later as I have so much to say but am simply overwhelmed with thoughts of you right now. All My Love - Aunt Lor"

"Today is April 14, 2005, I just heard of this website from your Aunt Tabitha, so I decided to leave a note. You were a fellow classmate of mine and Tyson's, we grew together and walked down the same isle at our graduation. You always knew how to make someone smile. I had this picture from one of our last days as Seniors, we were all in the library finishing up on things, and you were reading a book,up-side down at that, trying your hardest to look busy. That's how I will always remember you not only as someone who was always looking for a way to get in trouble, then try to find a way out, but a caring and comforting friend. You didn't go down without a fight and for that, I will always be greatful to you. Until we meet again, you will always be in my thoughts and our memories will live on forever!
We love and miss you ADAM L.THOMAS!"

"Today is April 14 and I found this website through one of Adam's friends, Josh Waddle. Adam has been heavy on my mind lately. We are preparing to offer the second scholarship in his name to a graduate of the La Plata High School, the school Adam graduated from in 2000. Last year the award went to his cousin and best bud, Megan Green. We will honor you always, Adam. Your name will never fade in the town you loved so much. This website is awesome and I will check it often to see who has left a message. July 4th weekend 2003 you were leaving La Plata on the train. We live a block away and heard the train coming and hurried down to the station for one last hug. We barely made it and you got on the train to put your bag away, you couldn't get back off because the train was so packed. I waved at the windows hoping you saw me. When we drove away I had the sickest feeling I would never see you again. I tried to tell myself not to think that way, but I couldn't help it. I got the call Labor Day weekend from your dad with the news you had been killed. My life is pretty much a blur for the 2 weeks after that. But I do know that we honored you and came together like no other family could. There were probably about 500 people at your funeral in La Plata and your Grandpa Jerry told stories about you. The most important story he told was the one about you confessing to him that Jesus Christ was your Lord and Savior and that you believed in Him. This has comforted me many times since August 31, 2003. And, I know that Jesus is comforting you now. I will see you again and I can only imagine what it will be like.

"I just stumbled across this website today, January 5, 2005, which is oddly enough Adam's birthday. I am Adam's cousin, friend, and high school classmate and I want to first off wish him a Happy 23rd Birthday. I will never forget the day I (we all) lost Adam and his memory still remains in my mind and heart. I will never forget the good times we had in La Plata and all of the trouble we caused. There was no better person to cause all of that trouble with. I knew Adam a long time and it still feels like he has just left to go back to New York or Chicago for awhile and it is just a matter of time before I will bump into him on the streets of La Plata, Missouri. But, I won't. I still have the pictures and memories that I am so fortunate to have and I keep in mind that we will meet again someday. ADAM- I miss you, respect you greatly, and thank you for fighting for what America is all about. You are a better person because of your actions than I will ever be. Thank you to all the others who have posted messages on this website; kind words like those that have been posted help us get through the pain. Bless you all!!!"

"Another holiday is upon us...too many have passed without my saying something to Adam and his family. Adam, you were one of the finest Soldiers; one who others never thought twice about entrusting you with their lives. From the bottom of this Mom's heart, thank you. To the Family...who would have thought before August 31, 2003 that we would become a very important part of each other's lives. Thank you. Adam, am sitting here with a smile on my face remembering the visit to Ft Drum and "hanging out" with your Mom and little brother. She radiates with pride and love when talking about you. Anyhoo, am getting lengthy here so want to end with a poem by Marsha Burks Megehee called "Soldier Angels":
There MUST be Soldier Angels who lead our Heroes home when they've fought the final battle and life's last breath is gone. Veterans of ancient firefights with the true courage of their own.
There must be Soldier Angels who lead our Heroes home. To a home past soaring Eagles, past God's great warming sun, the last LZ for Heroes when a Soldier's life is done. He shares a special handshake with his Brothers at Heaven's Door, and awaits The Master's Orders in the Soldier Angels Corps.
Just two words left to say....
Thank You"
