Wow there are so many things to say and I just don't know where to start. We had everything planned out and we almost made it, but I guess God had other plans for you. I still don't believe it and I don't know if I ever will be able to accept it. It's so hard! I don't have any idea how I'm going to get through it this time, but I'm going to try to handle things the way you would want me to handle them. I hope you know you meant the world to me, I would have done anything for you. I'm very proud of you for what you've done. Love and Sadness
Although I had only met Fred once or twice I was so impressed with what a funny, outgoing young man he was. When I heard he was joining the Marines, I knew then he was also full of honor, pride and bravery. Even though I am a middle aged woman, I knew he was the type of person we all aspire to be at any stage in our lives. I was proud to know him and even prouder he loved my niece and would eventually be a member of our family. Jamie, you and Fred may not be married in the flesh, but I truly believe you and he are married in a way that transcends earthly bounds. Although it's not a choice you would willingly make, you now have a wonderful guardian angel to look after you and take care of you the way he chose to look after and take care of ALL of us here in the United States. Fred was a brave and honorable young man. This world could use more people like him.
Events like these make us so profoundly sad....yet so profoundly proud. We should all say a prayer for all of the young men and women, as well as their families, still serving our country. As evidenced by the tragic turn of events in Fred's loved ones lives, some of those young, brave soldiers will make the ultimate, ultimate sacrifice to keep us a safe and free nation and will indeed leave the world a much better place. Words can not convey the thanks I have for Fred and all of the soldiers who have lost theirs lives or are left serving our country. May God truly, truly bless them.

"It was just a week after we had got out of Iraq and back onto the uss ponce. I was asleep in my rack, when I realized I was in a dark room. Wondering what was going on, all of a sudden a door opened up and this incredible white like cam through but not enough to light up the whole room. I said to my self what is this when a figure stepped into the door way. I could tell it was a marine by the silhouette I could see the cover was a garrison cover and that he had on dress deltas. But I could not tell who the marine was till he took a step into the room and with each step more and more light flooded the room it was the purest whitest light I had ever seen and finally his face was reviled to me. It was none other than nixon him self he had the biggest grin on his face I had seen in a while, I was so overjoyed to see him that we hugged immediately and I said to him "sorry you died man I really miss you". He replied to me that it was ok and he was in a better place. As quickly as he came he had to leave as he was going I call to him "hey man I will see you soon". He turned over his shoulder and said "but not that soon". and with those words he was gone. It is hard to be leave I will never see my friend again but I am glad he made it into heaven and came back to visit. To this day I still see my friend but not as much as I used to see his face in a lot of young marines. I would just like to say thanks to his parents for having such and incredible man to send out into the world. But most of all I will never for him."

Sgt. Daniel Torres died in Bayjii, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device hit his vehicle.
He was assigned to the 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia. Died on February 4, 2005. He will be missed by all his family, Sofia and their unborn child.

It is now February and I still have not yet accepted the fact that he is gone. Blain and I spent all 13 years of school together, not only was he my classmate but also a very good friend. I talked to Blain often after he joined the military. I still remember the day the recruiter came to get him, I cried like a baby! Blain called me on November 11, 2004. That was the last time I got to talk to him. I miss him more than words can EVER say. I appreciate EVERYTHING he did for OUR country. I have a 3 year old daughter, who remembers Blain. Every generation has its place in history. These young soldiers did not give there life in vain. Yesterday many people in Iraq took the next step toward FREEDOM. THEY VOTED. This soil is soaked in the blood of our young heros and is nurtured for FREEDOM. Some day I would like to travel to a free Iraq and say a prayer over the spot where our son fell. I would say a prayer thanking GOD for the freedom that I have and also thank him for blessing me. He allowed me to be the father of such a fine young man and share in his life no matter how short. I pray a silent prayer every time I hear of another loss for I have walked in the shoes of the parents and family who get that un-wanted annoucement. My heart has a special place for the families for we are united by these losses. Many of us share a wounded PRIDE that grows stronger with each passing day. We all share a hope that tomorrow will be the day that our HERO'S new brothers and sisters will come home safely and this war to has ended. I made my mom promise me that she would go and change them when they come threw and collect them (every 2 months) and replace it with something. I only met you once or twice lifting weights and eating meals. But you always had the most positive attitude and that my friend is what we will never forget about you. If Mrs. Wise reads this I served in Bravo Company in Iraq and met your son a few times. And I know you live in Tallahasse, but my mother lives in Arlington and she will make sure his grave has something on it all the time.

I wanted to share a website with you that helped me with my grieving process tremendously (I lost my dad suddenly this past summer; with no warning, as most of you have gone through). There is a section in particular called "Emails to Heaven", where you can write emails to your deceased loved ones and read others' emails as well. "Well, I am almost out of Fallujah. My time is short but as I have said before, there was or is never a day I dont think about Sgt Conde. I still feel really guilty about leaving 2/4 when I did, I would have been in his squad, I would have been there with him, Fighting. Even though I fought harder than every here with other marines, I still feel empty but for every one I got, or thought got, It was one for Conde and his family and all his friends. Still I feel I havent done enough. All our Jr Marines have grown and moved on. I am still here tryin to make sense of it all. I find inspiration and motivation still in Conde. I remember a joke he told me and few others about him being a govener, he would say "Vote for Conde, I can either hurt you or I can help you!" and we would all laugh. I can say that he did more than hurt the enemy, and for all of us that knew him, he did more than help us, he blessed us and touched us, all. I wasnt a close friend like some but I was a friend none-the less. I have said it a million times that I will never forget him, and I wont. Ryan landis, a close friend of mine, as well as a friend of Conde sends his condolances and his prayers. You may have gone to a better place my friend but, it just aint the same knowing you are gone. It was an honor to know you as a man and a friend. One hell of a Marine. "I met SSGT Jordan on our way over to the Gulf in Jan/03. From the moment I saw this Marine onboard I knew he was special. He used to train his marines near where I worked on the ship, and I would hear this intense voice piercing the ships steel decks and bulkheads. I would walk out there to see this big, tall, intense marine barking at his young marines. The way he held their attention and the way they looked back at him not missing a word he said was amazing to me. We were both the same rank so he and I would relax in the same lounge together. So introduced myself to him and the first thing he said to me was "darn glad to meet you shipmate" his handshake was firm and meaningful. He and another SSGT would do the "daily Marine News" on the ships closed circuit TV so all of the ships company knew who he was. One of he last conversations we had was about the upcoming combat he and his marines were about to encounter. He told me sadly that he was going to lose a lot of marines. I never imagined I wouldn't be able to bring him back to North Carolina. The day I saw his name scroll across the bottom of the TV, I couldn't believe it. I had to read the message 3 or 4 times to make sure I wasn't reading it incorrectly. My stomach sung and a lump set in my throat. Big J and 17 other Devil Dogs perished on 23 March 2003 from 1/2, brought over by USS Ponce (LPD-15). I met some unbelievable marines on the way over and back from OIF. You have helped me with a mission I'm on.--My husband Bill served with Special Forces in Vietnam and is often in a rage over how overlooked our present soldiers are even tho people claim they're thinking of them. He noted that the whole country lowered it's flag for the terrible tsunami disaster and towns will lower their flags for a fallen firefighter or the town's public officials, but day after day we read about men killed in action and the flags remain at full staff. -- My mission is that each day that I hear of deaths anywhere in our military, be it in Iraq, Afghanistan, or elsewhere in the world or U.S., no matter what the cause, our flag will remain at half mast for 24 hours in their honor. This means it will be at half mast most of the time during our present war. A good day will be when we can raise it to full staff. So far I've been getting my information on fatalities by listening to the local news on my way home at the end of the day, but it's not reliable. If any deaths are reported the flag is half-mast the next day. But your website will help me tremendously in tracking statistics. -- To all of the families involved with our soldiers - it takes courage to put the uniform on and do what your country asks and needs. "Nathaniel Johnson was my brother. We had been seperated for years because our mother had been unfit to care for us. Almost 15 years had past and I finally found my brother again with the help of my adopted mother. I found him right before I was to get married. I thought this was a blessing. Only days later my mother could not bare to give me the news that he was killed in this point less war. I had already planned for both of my brothers to walk me down the aile, since they were the only blood family I knew I had. To this day I still can't believe that after 15 years the next time I was to see my brother would be at his funeral. Inever got a chance to talk to him, or find out about the man my younger brother had become. Hearing it from someone else just isn't the same. All I have to remember my brother are a couple of pictures his father copied for me. There is such a hole in my heart where the joy of having my brother back should be. I would love to hear from people who knew him, its not the same but its all I have.

"I trained with MSG Karpowich at Camp Atterbury prior to deployment. I was in the Bravo PLT, he in the Alpha PLT. During that time, Soldiers came together to form a bond and a sense of purpose. When I heard the news of the attack, and later of his death, my heart sank and ached. It really hit home. It is much the same feeling I had back on 9/13, the day you made the ultimate sacrifice for all of us. Another 7 of your comarades in the Anbar province have done the same this past weekend. I search the internet searching, praying that none of them are from 1/8. I suddenly realize that it's been exactly 3 months since you've left us to take your place guarding the gates. I once thought that at my age I had accomplished so much but in just half that time you have done so much more. My only regret is that I could not have been at your side in your time of need as you've been by mine these past few years. I speak of you with the highest regard even though I have to struggle to maintain some degree of composure when doing so. I suffer in silence and when I look in the mirror I see the same expression my grandfather, your great grandfather had when he lost his son who was my father. It is ironic that now I'm just an island in between generations as I've lost you as well. I miss the friendship we had and quite often reflect on the camping and fishing trips we had so much fun on. It will never be the same without you. Upon occasion I ride my bike past the place where you were put to rest. I can ride like the wind on any stretch of any road except for those two lonely miles. I can hardly breath or turn the pedals and the moisture running down my face turns from sweat to tears of sadness. I somehow forge on after asking that you please give me a gently push from behind. The feeling eventually passes and is replaced by that familiar emptiness. Your little siblings, Robert and Chrissy miss you so much and you will truly be missed this holiday season. I know I will miss the way you would come bounding through the door on Christmas Day and the way you would embrace the two little ones as they've been waiting for Big Brother Mikey's arrival. They pray for you every night and I know you are watching over them from above. Thank you so much for that!

"Below I've posted the accurate information surrounding my nephew's death in Iraq. The article posted on this site was the first information released by the DOD but is not accurate. I hope everyone will read the newspaper articles posted and then they will know truely what kind of hero my nephew Sergeant Chris Potts was and what kind of hero Sergeant Collier was when he went to try to save my nephew's life.
Chris was one of those special people that glowed from within. When you were in his presence you knew he was a wonderful person. He was the best man I've ever known and I will miss him more than words can say.
I wasn't surprised when the actual truth of the events that day were reported. As soon as I heard he had been killed I told my best friend "I know what happened. I know what he did. He put himself in the line of fire to save his men." I was 100% correct. Chris died the way he lived, thinking of others first and foremost.
Chris was a hero to me long before he sacrificed his life but now the I hope the world learns what I already knew. Chris was a hero and one of the most special people anyone could ever meet. People like him are few and far between.
I look forward to the day that I will again be able to joke and laugh with Chris. It won't be a day too soon.
Also, there are not words addiquate to thank the men who went back to that housing area and arrested the men responsible for such a disgusting disregard for life. They will all be in my prayers.

At the armory yesterday, Amy Neary read a letter that her husband, Maj. Christian M. Neary, the Alpha Battery commander, had written in Iraq on Wednesday.
"The terrible events of October 3 will forever remain in our hearts and minds, but we are moving forward because that is what Chris Potts and Rusty Collier would want us to do," he wrote. "As you all know, we raided the village that was responsible for taking our friends and we uncovered what is now being described as an improvised explosive device 'factory.' During the raid, we found 30 IEDs ready to be placed along roads to kill and injure unsuspecting soldiers and local innocent Iraqis in the name of terror as they drove by."
Neary said he'd been told "the value of this discovery would be felt for months to come" and it's being viewed "as the most significant discovery of electronic IED components in the Baghdad area since the start of the war."
"We continue to remember the Potts and Collier families and loved ones back home as they grieve their loss," the letter said. "We remember them daily in prayer and hope their families find some comfort in the fact they were doing their jobs, and that they gave their lives trying to save their fellow soldiers in harm's way."
Potts was a member of Rhode Island's A Battery, 1st Battalion, 103rd Field Artillery Regiment, which deployed to Iraq with the 206th. While leading his men in a combat patrol, Potts ordered his men to stay back, out of the line of fire, when he was engaged by enemy forces on October 3rd, 2004. While continuing to return fire in an effort to suppress the enemy, Potts was fatally wounded. "Sergeant Potts made the ultimate sacrifice during this maneuver," said his commander, Maj. Christian Neary, as he addressed the congregation. "His actions saved his Soldiers from certain injury or death."
CAMP TAJI, Iraq -- A firefight on the banks of the Tigris River Oct. 3 transformed a small patrol through Taji, Iraq, into a huge operation to seek out the individuals responsible for the deaths of two 39th Brigade Soldiers.
The men involved in the operation overcame emotion in order to successfully execute a plan that led to the discovery of a major weapons cache and apparent hub of terrorist activity.
"Essentially what they had set up was an [improvised explosive device] manufacturing facility," said Maj. Damon Cluck, Operations Officer of the 39th's 1st Battalion, 206th Field Artillery Regiment. The unearthing produced 23 120-millimeter mortar rounds, a South African 155-millimeter round and multiple detonation devices. Although representing only a small portion of the find, these are the ingredients to construct IEDs, some of which were already wired and ready for placement.
"That in itself made the cache significant in addition to the rockets and direct fire stuff that was found," said Cluck, who calls Russellville, Ark., home.
The plan for the operation, which resulted in the finding of a total of three caches, was unfortunately conceived in response to an ambush, which killed two American Soldiers just hours earlier. The incident occurred during a joint patrol with Iraqi National Guard (ING) Soldiers, along with Soldiers from the 39th's 206th Field Artillery Regiment Oct. 3. The firefight took the lives of Staff Sgt. Christopher S. Potts, of Tiverton, R.I., and Sgt. Russell L. Collier, of Harrison, Ark. This led to the decision to reorganize and go after those responsible by sealing off that area of Taji Village and searching 23 different homes and buildings inside.
"Immediately, we went into planning to go within 12 hours," said Maj. Christian Neary, commander of A Battery, 1st Battalion, 103rd Field Artillery Regiment, which is deployed with the 206th. "The brigade commander asked us to [wait] 24 more hours, so we could build combat power from the rest of the brigade task force. So, essentially, 36 hours later we moved down there and conducted a cordon and search."
Building combat power seemed somewhat of an understatement as hundreds of Soldiers came together to seek out the shooters. As the leadership planned the operation, the potential for strong emotions driven by the loss of their fellow Soldiers became a concern.
"I didn't want them going in for revenge, but I wanted them to go in for justice," said Neary, who is a resident of Cumberland, R.I. "We kind of pounded that into them during that 36 hours between the firefight and the mission, so that they knew we were going in there looking to find the folks that were responsible, not just looking to find anybody that was there to hold them accountable."
As the participants gathered for an operations order at the Iraqi National Guard Headquarters on the eve of the mission, Lt. Col. Keith Klemmer provided the Soldiers with a brilliant glimpse of professionalism.
"What Colonel Klemmer said was 'there are two things that will make the mission a success,' and this is just perfect, 'one…is courage,'" said Staff Sgt. Shawn Buffalo, an advisor support trainer for the ING. "He didn't need to explain that. Everybody knew. We were going into an area of possible contact, because it was where we lost two fellow soldiers. The response was so quiet in the room when he said that. Everybody knew what he meant.
"Second thing he said was 'honor,'" Buffalo continued. "He said 'honor means going in there being professional Soldiers, not letting your emotions run away with you. Do your job that you were trained to do and in doing so don't dishonor the memory of Sergeant Potts and Sergeant Collier. You'll do no honor to their memory by going in there and doing something out of hate.'"
As the Soldiers worked through their emotion from the initial incident, the words of Klemmer further built upon the foundation of professionalism laid by the ING following the firefight.
"During that time, the ING came up, several of the officers, several of the [noncommissioned officers] that have kind of proven themselves to be more professional than we ever thought possible, and said 'We're sorry about your loss,'" said Buffalo, a resident of Jacksonville, Ark. "'It's not acceptable. We're going to do anything we can. Let us know what we can do.'"
The bond built between the Iraqi and American Soldiers had apparently strengthened due to the incident, as they worked together in a near flawless execution of the plan.
"My guys strong-pointed every building while the ING did the deliberate search inside the buildings looking for weapons and illegal contraband," Neary said. "Their performance was very good. I was very pleased with their actions. They were motivated not only by the fact that they were Iraqi National Guard Soldiers, but they were also motivated because some of their guys were involved in the firefight the day before."
Along with the ING, the 206th and the 103rd, the mission included the support of Soldiers from the 39th Brigade's 2nd Battalions of both the 7th Cavalry and the 162nd Infantry. Through the joint efforts of these men, over 50 men were detained for questioning, with over 20 later determined to be involved in anti-Iraq operations. Among the detainees: the triggerman responsible for the deaths of Potts and Collier.
"I really think it turned out to be kind of a part of the healing [process], because before we went in there, we didn't really know why this had happened," Cluck said. "It was a firefight that developed out of nowhere, in an area where we'd never had a problem before. Going back in there and seeing the quantities of stuff we found really explained why the firefight had happened and why that area was so important to them that they would fight like they did two days before."
"We found a lot of items inside of the houses and on top of the roofs," said Capt. John Vanlandingham, Officer in Charge of the ING's Advisor Support Trainers. "We found three caches with numerous rockets, mortars, mortar tubes, rocket tubes, there was actually a 155 South African round that was set for an IED, it already had the wire coming out of it.
"It was a smooth operation, everybody knew what they were doing, we had time to rehearse and do some training with the ING before we went in and they did an outstanding job in their cordon and search," continued the New Blaine, Ark. resident.
"You bring together that diverse group…ING ... our battalion, plus support from another infantry battalion…and do that kind of [operation] and it goes off without anybody getting hurt and finding the kind of stuff we found…I thought it was a pretty successful operation," Cluck said.
"You've got to give kudos to the battalion staff of the 206th," said Buffalo. "The battalion staff of the 206th and the 39th Brigade planned an outstanding operation."
"You've got small unit leaders that are out there fighting this war," Cluck said, reflecting on the loss of his two Soldiers. "That's what those two guys were. They went out there, they saw a fight, and they went into it. They went into it with the ING, that they were supporting, and nobody ever backed off. Potts was moving forward when he was hit and Collier laid down his weapon to go to Potts' aid, and that's when he was hit. That kind of devotion to duty, that's what's winning this war.""

I lost David, who was in the Air Force, over a year ago, not to this war, but to an accident. Shortly after, I moved far away from home. I was mad at everyone for a long time. I was even mad at God. How could he take someone so wonderful? David was such an inspiration to everyone, and such a great soul. I finally came to the realization that God took David because he was an angel. As impossible as it seemed to me, God loved him more than I ever could, and needed him for something way more important than I could ever imagine. God also loves me though, just as he loves you. God didn't want to hurt me, but he needed David.
I loved David with all of my heart, and if he were to have asked, I would have spent my life with him. We never got that chance, but the love is still there, and in a way, he's still here with me, just like you're loved one is still with you. That beautiful sunrise this morning was them saying hello. That scent of cologne that just breezed into the room, or that memory that just popped up and made you laugh, that was them. The drops of rain that fell when there was not a cloud in the sky.

Thank you for posting a message to us about our loss Jeremy Drexler. I am so devestated over losing my son, I forget to respond to others. I am sorry I havn't written back to you sooner. This pain is not getting any better. Now my other sons in the Navy and Marines will not be going over unless they choose. Which they won't if I have any say. I can not bear to lose another. I love my country but I love my sons MORE. There are organizations that will make quilts for you in memory of your sons. Search the web. Cross-stich, angels, and drawn portraits. They are really awesome. Our sons are heros and how soon others forget them but these people do care and they will make stuff for you. If you have not contacted Micheal Reagan, you really should. His work is so awesome!! The picture he drew of my son was so real. I can't began to tell you how much I love this picture!! Trust me, contact him. It is free and is listed under fallen soldiers charties. We will see our sons again, they are just having a awesome vacation with God. If you feel that you want to do something, have your churches or community send care packages to the soldiers that are still there. If you don't have your sons platoons address, feel free to use my son's platoon.
