"October 13th, 2014

PFC Wyatt, my cougar in the sky, today marks the 11th anniversary of your unfortunate departure and ultimate sacrifice. It is every day I think of you. Not one day passes by without the thought of what happened on this day. I share our experience with everyone that is willing to hear it. Each and every time I tell it, it becomes more and closer to my heart and the heart of others. It has been good therapy for me to be able to tell others my experiences and helps to cope with it. I have been working closed to Soldiers since I retired. I help the Army develop training devices that essentially save lives. I wish you and I and the rest of the crew in the HMMWV at the time, had the opportunity to use these devices. It might have saved many lives; however it wasn’t meant for us. We are those that others use as an experience so the same doesn’t happened again. Both you and I have contributed to the success and the positive outcome of these devices. Even from the “Sky” you are still being part of and in the saving lives business of many other Soldiers. Thank you for making me a better man and former soldier… You will always be upper most in my mind. God bless you… Cougar 7 out!"

"Hello Wyatt,

We met only briefly a few times, but we both deployed together with the Copperheads. Just wanted you to know that I've been thinking about you, and wanted to wish you a Happy Birthday. From one Texan to another, Happy Birthday Stephen..."

"Steven, you're my hero. I remember when you first joined our unit and had that determination to succeed. You always did your best and had that drive to help others be at theirs too. I miss you my friend. All the conversations we had on the trash burn details and on guard duty. I got hurt out there serving next to you so I got sent back early. I was at your memorial service back here in Ft. Sill but you know that you were here with us. You always have been here with us. I remember all the times we used to hang out after work just talking about our life plans. You taught me not to plan, but to live. You're always on my mind. You're never forgotten. WE WAS BOTH TALKING ABOUT THE DEPLOYMENT AND THINKING AND TALKING ABOUT OUR MISSION AND WHAT WE WAS GOING TO DO. PFC GUL LIVED ACROSS FROM US. THIS SAYING YOU SAID TO ME ALWAYS STICKS IN MY MIND "DRINK WATER DRIVE ON" IS WHAT YOU SAID AFTER OUR CONVERSATION. YOU HAVE MADE IT AND YOUR A TRUE AMERICAN HERO. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU,"DRINK WATER AND DRIVE ON"!"

"I never saw this site until today, and often think about what happened that day in October. I was friends with Wyatt, he was a good kid. I have had issues with what happened for a long time mainly out of guilt. I remember that day like it just happened. At the time I was SPC George, any time we had a convoy or mission I normally went, that day I was headed to the HMMWV with my stuff when I was stopped and told that I was going to be sending fire missions to the guns instead and that Wyatt was going to get him some time out of the FOB. So I go and get started sending missions to the guns when we hear the transmission, IED, IED, 1 KIA, 3 wounded. We stopped the practice missions and I raced to the OP Center to head out for QRF, again I was stopped and told I was needed to more in the ops center to coordinate coms with our convoy, QRF and other responding units. I felt trapped, helpless, and at the time they were taking fire so the identity of the KIA wasn't known, it seemed like it was an eternity. We were a small unit, we were all friends. Finally we got the word, I was crushed, me and Wyatt weren't best friends but were friends none the less. For years I dealt with guilt that he should still be here, that I should have been on the convoy, I always was. He was so young, just married, it wasn't right. A little over year ago I was medically retired following an injury. It wasn't until then that I talked to anybody about this. Anyway, when I found this site I couldn't believe it, it brought back so many memories, hearing from people that I haven't heard from in years. I knew I had to tell my fellow Soldiers, that I love them, that I hope they are doing well, and to Wyatt, I'm sorry man, I don't know why you, I don't know why that day, or why not me, all I know is that I think of you often and you will always be in my mind, and missed. The anniversary just passed which is why I was trolling looking for stuff on the net. I'm not sure what else to say. SGT Walls, if you read this I hope you are doing ok."

"Hello my friend,

Again another year has passed and you are still on my mind. You are missed dearly. Who wouldve thought we would be writing something like this for you. I am retired now. But the memories we all share of you the good and bad we would give back in an instant just to have you talking with us. But we all know God had a plan for you and we dont question that. We love you and miss you dearly my brother. Until I see you on the other side, I will keep the memory of your life alive."

"Stephen E. Wyatt,
I was in the convoy the day that this all happened. I wanted to let you know that you have not been forgotten. It is because of you that I get the oppurtunity to enjoy life with my family. I will never forget that everything I have today is because of you. Thank you"

"My name is Andy Roberts, I was part of the team of soldiers that responded when we heard that Charlie Battery was attacked. I saw 1SG Pepin wrote on this wall and I wanted to say that I saw him act with heroism on that day. I have much love and much respect for you, Top!! You loved your soldiers and you fought for them. I'm very happy you have been getting therapy. I got it a few years ago and it changed my life for the better.

I am an advocate for veterans now and I have told the story of October 13, 2003 many times to help people understand the issues veterans face when they are there and what they face when they come home.

For those of you that that are still hurting from this day you are not alone, there are many, many resources that exist to help you and if you ever need anything, let me know. You can email me at andrew.roberts0304@gmail.com.

To Stephen's family, I am so sorry for your loss and I thank you for making the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Stephen died supporting a tremendously important mission of securing the Iraqi border and helping a fledgling democracy grow. I will never forget him and his sacrifice.

Take care and please contact me if you need anything."

"I did not know Stephen nor was there during his time there. I arrived at FOB Wyatt in Feb 04. I was told of who the FOB was named after and only learned of him thru stories that were passed down. I know what we heard made an impact on our unit cause at times soldiers of units further away would come in and call it FOB carpenter I believe, and they respectfully were set straight of the name FOB Wyatt. After a couple of months at Wyatt we moved on to another Fob. I wished we could have stayed there but orders are orders. We would return to Wyatt every once in awhile to check on it. Here it is alittle over 7 years later of having learned of Wyatt and his memory is still with me. I've often wondered why Wyatt's stories and memory have stayed with me for so long. I believe that the essence of what Wyatt represented remained in that place and everyone who come intouch with him, or anything that had to do with him was better for it. I believe a part of him was ingrained in us all. I remember at times telling my wife of Fob Wyatt and showing pictures of the base and around it and telling of the origin of its name. Sadly she passed in 08 from an auto accident. Ive always hoped she was able to meet him and let him know how much I respected him. To all his comrades I extend my deepest condolences. To the family of Wyatt I extend my deepest condolences and hope that all have in part been able to move on in some measure and that his memory has been an inspiration for all. Ive at times of loss read a poem that helps its called "Miss me but let me go" its by an unknown British soldier that was killed in WW1. To all take care and wish a shinning road ahead."

"Hello PFC Wyatt.

This is your 1SG (RET) Jose Pepin. Here we are again, seven years later talking and leaving a message for you and all other fallen Soldiers out there. It has been the longest seven years of my life. There is not one day or night that goes by I don't remember this day. A day like today marks one of the most significant days of my entire life if not the most important. As a Soldier in arms, my primary mission was to bring all Soldier s home from combat; I failed at that. This incident has thought me a great lesson in life. Never take for granted what could happen and expect the unexpected. I speak of you as if you were still here with us. My Doctors say it helps to cope with my PTSD. It has been better since I stop feeling guilt for what happened. As SFC Ward said in his posting, I’m beginning to overcome it. One thing I will never forget and want others to know, you saved my life and all I’m able to enjoy today, I owe it all to you. Thanks for that and I hope I would be as good of a Soldier as you were. See you on the high ground my “Cougar in the Sky”. May God bless you and your family! Cougar 7"

"Hello,

This is your old chief again. I want to tell you that I miss you dear friend. Its been 7yrs since that day. You have changed my life dramatically. Remembering your outgoing personality, love of life, and your family. Your death was a big thing for me because I wanted to protect you and get you back to that which you loved. I failed. I concealed much guilt about your death, but just recently gotten help to overcome my guilt. See even in death the beautiful person you are extends himself to continue helping others just as in life. I love you and miss you my brother in arms. May God bless you and your family."
SFC Christopher M. Ward of Fort Polk, LA.

"PFC Wyatt, this is your 1SG Jose Pepin writing you a note. I’m very moved by all the postings on this Fallen Heroes Memorial website. This show prove that there are many people, family and friends out there that really care for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country as you did. I will never forget that day (13 October 2003). I was there with you and witnessed first hand what you went through. I will never forget how everyone came out to protect us. Your friends and family should be very proud of your service and how you gave your life to safe mine. This was the worse day of my life. Loosing a Soldier is never easy for anyone, especially me that my job was to watch over all of you and bring all of 82 of you to your friend and family alive and well. To this day, I’m being treated for the memories and how life like still is in my mind. You protected us and I’d like to thank you in this manner, how much I appreciate your service and how much you touched our Soldiers and the families of Charlie Battery 1st Bn, 17th FA. After your death, we named our FOB after you. We called it “Camp Wyatt” in your honor. Everyone in our sector knew who you were and what it meant to have named our FOB in your honor.

To all those in C 1-17 FA, which have posted their own notes here, I’d like to thank you for your continue service and for been there when we most needed you. This forum is a good therapy for those who were part of this unfortunate death. God bless you all and never forget to always do an extra push-up for the one “Cougar” in the sky; PFC Stephen Eugene Wyatt.

"Pfc. Wyatt man there is not a day that goes by that I don't remember you, I remember that unforgettable day like it was yesterday it plays in my mind over and over again we were talking right before you left matter of fact you were already in your gunners hatch and I was on my way to guard duty and how amped up you were to be getting out of the FOB for a little while and I had to go to guard duty. Brother there is not a day you are forgotten and you never will be. I remember you being the number one man in 5th Section and I was the number one man in 6th section those were some good times you were pretty good buddie."
SSG. Smith, Charles M of Ft. Sill OK

"Hello my brother in arms. This is your 1st Section Chief. I just wanted to let you know on your day I put your picture up and worn your name on my wrist. I also told my Soldiers and command about you on your day. I told another young Soldier, who just came in the Army, about you. He was the same age as you and a little confused about his place in this Army. I gave him some sound advice. I told him "Be on time, look good, and study hard. Sounds familiar because it was the same thing I told you when you came to me. Every year around this time I find myself thinking of what your life would be like if you were here and I say to myself "God took him for a reason", sometimes I'm confused about that reason but when I think of the good times we had talking, I realize that was the reason. I miss you and you will always be apart of my life until that day comes that God takes me. Love you brother! See yeah on the other side."
SFC Christopher M. Ward of Ft. Polk, LA. US

"Six years ago tomorrow I left early on PCS orders from Khanaqin, Iraq. Six years ago tomorrow you were killed in a convoy that I was supposed to be a part of, I know there is nothing that I could have done to prevent it. We were in such an early stage in this war, our equipment was so primitive compared to what we use now. I know Delawder has spoken at a memorial for you, Sgt Walls and I talk on occasion but really don't bring the attack up. We weren't the closest friends but we shared our moments.

It was hard to sit through the training the following year, wondering would the attack be in the next slide? Back then there were so few soldiers with combat experience, yet I was considered one, as a young Specialist I was giving these classes because I had been there.

Every day since, I remember, Forget Not The Fallen."
SGT Jacob M. Bills of FOB Diamondback / Fort Hood, Texas / Portland, Oregon

"I also was a friend of PFC Wyatt... He and I would play basketball outside the Rec Center we stayed in for a few months of our deployment... I'll never forget that horrible day... Not a day goes by without thinking about it... PFC Wyatt, you will be missed and know that you will live on through our memories of you and the good times we had... I'll never forget you!!! HOOAH!!!"
SGT Salinas, Luis

"I WAS A FRIEND OF WYATT AND HE WAS A MEMBER OF MY BATTERY IN IRAQ C1/17. I REMEMBER THE EXACT MOMENT HE DIED. I WAS ON GUARD DUTY ON FRONT GATE WHEN I HEARD THE NEWS. IT WAS A SHOCK. HE WAS A GOOD MAN AND LOVED HIS WIFE VERY MUCH. HE COULD NOT WAIT TO COME HOME AND WAS COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS TILL OUR UNIT GET BACK TO THE STATES. I LIVED IN THE SAME BARRACKS WITH HIM TOO AND HE WAS A JOY TO BE AROUND. EVERY TIME I WENT BY THE BRIDGE WHERE HE WAS KILLED I WOULD REMEMBER HIM IN MY THOUGHTS. EVEN THOUGH THIS WEBSITE SAY HE WAS KILLED IN BALAD. HE DIED ACTUALLY NORTH OF THE TOWN OF BALAD RUZ. WHICH IS DIFFERENT THAN THE TOWN BALAD.I JUST WANTED TO GET THAT RIGHT.
MAY GOD BLESS HIS SOUL."

"To Stephen E. Wyatt's family,loved ones, friends & acquaitances:

I received Stephen's name on the Hero Bracelet which I purchased. I will wear it proudly and tell others of his sacrifice.

I lost my husband (age 50) in July 2004 to a sudden heart attack. My sorrow, grief and loss has subsided a little since I began wearing Stephen's name on my wrist. I hope by showing my support in this way for the soldiers who gave their lives in this war I will be able to help mend someone else's heart.

Please know we will never forget these soldiers. Their lives were a gift to us all.

Thank you."

"My Stephen,
How loving, kind, and sweet you are. As we grew up together we had so much fun. We got in tons of trouble but had fun doing it. From watching you ski down the hill in the back yard with WATER skis when it snowed and dad came home just in time to hear you start cussing when you went over the lightly frozen pond! How Exciting! Froze your tooshie didnt you! You are my hero and i miss you so much. I have millions of memories of us and i wont let any of them slip. They pass through my head a million times a day. I miss you so much and although it has been a year, it still doesnt seem like your really gone. We had our ups and downs just like all families do but somehow we always made it through. You led a great life down here as well as leading people to God. I know you are doing terriffic up there and are watching over us all. It eases my pain to know that you are home with God. From our childhood to our highschool years you never let me forget who I was and by how many people I was loved. I don't know how I am making it without you but I do know it sure is hard. You are my inspiration through life, you helped me get to where I am today. I love you so much and miss you so greatly. I will see you again one day soon but untill then my God take care of you and make you happy. I love you!!!"
