"I think of you often and smile. Today I thought of O Brother, Where Art Thou? I realized I still don’t know anyone that loves that movie as much as I do BUT you. Watching now. I so wish you were here sitting on my couch. Those are things that I miss most about you. Love & miss you.

"Drill Sgt West... though I am a decade late I just heard of your passing... I was your soldier when I was in basic training Oct 2000- Feb 2001 you were tough in me but felt the need to be lenient with me because I was from cleveland and you were a die hard Cleveland Browns fan... I'm sure you are livid At the season they are having this year as we sit at 0-14 🙄.. I remember you had your office decked out in cleveland Browns decor... I just heard of your passing from DS Helfelfinger... RIP, my 19k Teacher, Brother, and friend- Richardson"

"Jeannie & Shelby,
I had the honor to serve with Rob when he was a CPL/SGT and I was a SSG, we were stationed at Fort Hood, TX. As a matter of fact, we spend many training days in each other’s company as he was my gunner while we were assigned in Texas. Well, I was nominated and attended Drill Sergeant School in to Oct 93. After completing Drill Sergeant and before being assigned to Fort Knox, I wanted to do something special for Rob as he is the reason I was successful in my military career. I remember he was attending BNCOC and I visited him and we just talked about his future in the military. As I left I presented him with a coin I had specially made for him and I remember the smile he gave me. That was last time I seen him. I have many great memories of this fine gentleman and he will forever remain young in my eyes. I am now retired but I find myself reminiscing of my military days, especially this great NCO and the many others I lost in this war… This past week I was asked to be the guest speaker at a Memorial Day ceremony in KY and Rob was certainly on my mind. Just know HE WILLl NEVER BE FORGETTEN, my prayers are with you both always…

"Bobby,
May 14th 2006 is a day that I wish never happened.. I try to focus on all the great memories of you. Your chubby little face when you were a baby or the jokes you told from your joke books that you brought to Grandma’s house for Sunday dinner. Then later in life when we would talk about life, where life was heading for you or for me and the joke we both were in an ‘unique” situation. It wasn’t always what was said that was funny it was the way you said certain words that cracked me up. Or the time you came down our driveway with 2 cups of coffee at 5 a.m. and our shed was about to burst into flames from a burn pile I had going. All you said was “accelerant?’ And we laughed. We always laughed A LOT when you were here. The gambling trip a bunch of us took to Canada and the little old ladies and the little old guys thought you were a football player, you just grinned and we all laughed. When your mom and I went to W.V. to check out where you were going to be, we had a few beers, talked about Iraq some and played battleship all night. Or at least until you finally beat me. We talked how you had gotten battleship when you were little for Christmas and we had played then.
I still cry for you or may be I cry for all of us because we are missing out on all that could have been…
Each and everyone of your family misses you and loves you forever."

"Dear Jeanie and Shelby, I joined Ancestry .com recently and tonight was looking up people that I have known. I typed Bobby's name in to see if he had children and where he was living.That was 5 hours ago since I found out what his fate was. My heart was torn. You see, I did not get Bobby grow to be a man. I only got to see him from an infant until he was about 7 years old. He was the sweetest kid you would ever meet. I was with him a lot. I took him to his baseball practices, taught him how to slide and we wore his "Rockem /Sockem robots out. I used to take a towel and make a Super Man cape that he would wear. I would pretend like I was in distress, he would come into the room and say "this looks like a job for (in a deep voice) "a job for Superman" Once he came in the room with his cowboy boots, superman cape, cowboy hat and underwear. I said "Who are you now/" He said " I am Tex" If I had known what I just found out this evening, I would have told him "No Bobby, You are truly a "Super Man" and that you are. God Bless you both. If you ever would like to contact me just go to "foxfire riverside campground.com" and I'd be glad to email you and share some cute stories with you.
May God Bless you so much....

"Recently learned of Bob's loss. It is difficult to find the right words to express the grief & the appreciation for our "Heroes", who has paid the ultimate price to preserve our freedoms and protect the victims in other countries. I deeply regret Bob has paid the price with his life. He was assigned to the Master Gunner Branch as instructor in late 90's, he only worked for me a short time before being DA select for Drill Instructor. Bob left a very memorable impression on me - Good person & Great Soldier - "A Grateful Nation Salutes you!" Rest in Peace our brother in Arms. Thank You Bobby for the footprints that you have left behind. You have earned your rest. God Speed."

"To the West family my heart goes out to you. I was stationed at Ft.Carson Co in k troop 3/3 ACR 4th platoon and was his tank driver for about 2 years. I served beside him in 2003 in Iraq. He was one of the most dedicated and courageous leaders that I have ever served with. SFC west and I were close friends and no matter what we faced I always knew he was there and his bravery kept us going mission after mission. While on his tank crew at Ft.Carson he led us to achieve the "top tank" status for k troop and I will always remember him as the best of the best. He will always be a hero in my heart and not a single day goes by without the memory of this warrior. GOD BLESS"

"Tommorow, May 14th, will mark the passing of my best friend and brother-in-arms, MSG Robert West. 5 years ago Bobby was taken from this world by an IED in Iraq, at the young age of 37. He left behind a loving wife and beautiful daughter who miss him every day. He left an indelable mark on the life of every person he came into contact with, he was taken from us way too soon and will be missed everyday we still walk this earth. Bobby my brother, we all miss you, and hope to meet you again when I am called to our maker."

"SSG West at the time was my drill sergeant in basic training at Ft. Knox, KY back in 2000 with A Co. 2-81 AR. I was there during what I think was his last cycle on the DS tour. He was such an influence in my military career as I am in the National Guard in Iowa still but had alot of repsect for Drill Sergeant West. He was hard, but fair. And he respected hard work. As I am now a Staff Sergeant in the Iowa Army National Guard and am currently a platoon sergeant in an Infantry Unit in Afghanistan, I think often of my days at Ft. Knox and all the things Drill Sergeant West taught me. He was the epitomy(sp?) of what an NCO should be. I found out about him beind KIA from a 1SG that I happened to meet while going home on leave that was a drill sergeant as well that worked with MSG West. We started small talk while waiting for our flight and eventually found out that we both knew MSG West. He told me about the tragic end to MSG West's life. Drill Sergeant West, you and your family will be in my thoughts forever as even though you pry wouldn't remmeber me, you had a profound effect on my military career and still do every day. adam.riediger@us.army.mil"

"Jeannie & Shelby~
I want to let you know that not a day goes by that George and I don't think about Bobby. We got to spend a lot of time with him while he was at Bragg and would stop in and see us at Knox before heading up to Ohio, and of course when we were all in Ohio together there was golf and the long talks that included their friend "Jack". I only got to meet you both while at Fort Carson and we had you over, but I know you were Bobby's whole world, he talked about his girls constantly and had a picture that was pulled out with pride and love. This is the first way that I wanted to try and get in touch with you. George flew from Knox to Colorado for the funeral, but we have not had an address to keep in touch with you. I wanted to let you know that Ohio is giving family members of deceased veterans a bonus for their sacrifice, it is definitely worth looking into because of the ultimate sacrifice you live with everyday. The website for information is: www.veteransbonus.ohio.gov or the phone number: 1-877-644-6838. I hope that you check this memorial occasionaly and would love to hear from you. Like I said before, we think of Bobby everyday and my heart is heavy for you, And we think of Bobby's mom too and hope you are all aware how much we admire your strength. My email address: gotbirth4@yahoo.com, I would love to hear from you."

"Bobby my friend I hope your daughter is well and your family is happy.

I honor you on this day because I know you are a true hero to me and always will be remembered as such. You are in the Hall Of Fame in Elyria days after your death and we remembered you then. you have made the ultimate sacrifice and you are missed.

Ill never forget me and you talking before that Akron Hoban game and me telling you I had a feeling you were gonna do something great and in the 4th quarter you made that game saving Interception and you came to the sideline and you sought me out and we hugged and jumped around in celebration. It was a great memory I'll never forget. You are always a champion in my book. You are a hero to America.

I hope there is a way your family can reach us in the EC community to continue our support."
Brian Fitzpatrick of Elyria

You have been like a Sister to Angie and me, I want you to know you are part of our family too, and we love you and if you ever need anything, you got it.
Shelby;
Sweetie, I want you to know that your Daddy was the best friend I have ever had, he was a great soldier, and a true American Hero. Your Daddy loved you more that anything in the world, You will always be his little girl. I know nothing I could ever do or say would take his place, but if you ever need me, “Uncle Dick” will be here for you.
Bob;
I know your not here in this life with us anymore, but you will always be with us in our hearts and memories. I will always cherish the time you and I spent together. "it has been a little over a year since you were killed. i have your picture from the memorial on my desk at work.Your cheesy grin can make me cry and laugh in the same moment. not a day goes by that i don't regret calling you and saying i'm sorry. i wish we had been able to make peace before you died, i will regret that for the rest of my life. i am so sorry that we never said "I Love You" and that we let our differences ruin our relationship. I miss you and i want to say what i should have said when you were here..thank you for bravely serving our country and I am proud to be your sister. I will always love you and will always have you in my heart.Your sister, Lisa"

"To the family of MSG West, I'm so sadden to hear about the death of a very good friend of mine. West and I were stationed in Fort Knox, Ky. together for two years and we sat next to each other in ANCOC for 88 days. I will truly miss hearing him talk about hitting the golf course after we finished our test in school. May God bless his entire family. He was truly a great person to be around."

"Bobby was like a son to me,from the first time I held him as an infant,we had a special bond,and it grew stronger through the years.He grew up with my three children and continued to be like a brother to them.We were so lucky that the past few years,he was home alot.Many,many nights I would find him on our couch. and Nomatter how many times he was in and out he always gave me a big bear hug and a kiss.I can't believe the horrible pain and my heart feels like a huge weight and it just never eases. Bobby was killed in a horrible blast and blaze on Mothers Day.I know his beloved "Mary B" and I will never be able to celabrate that day again.Rest in peace and you will never ever be forgotten,because you will always be our "Golden Boy'."
Aunt Bonnie Shreve of Elyria,Ohio

"If you knew Bobby you know how hard this is, it's so hard to lose someone as amazing as him. He'd make you laugh until you cried, until your cheeks hurt. He loved his family and he loved being a soldier, god we had so much fun. My heart is broken...I just can't believe he's gone. Bobby, a day won't go by that i won't think about you. Until we meet again......"

"Bob was a damn fine Drill Sergeant and a very close personal friend of mine. He taught me a great deal about leading soldiers when I was a “Baby Drill” at Fort Knox, KY. For the two years that I was lucky enough to be stationed with him, I valued his friendship, experience, sense of humor, and ability to keep me going with an occasional golf story or a hilarious joke.
Bob, I’ll miss that award winning grin and the smoke shack conversations we had.

To the West Family: You are in my thoughts and prayers."
