"It is surreal to even comment on the passing of my elementary school friend. Via facebook, I learned of his death, and was deeply saddened. He was very kind, quiet and yet memorable. My most sincere sympathy to his family. This is a somber reminder that we really are at war.:-("

"Sgt. Carl Thomas was a great friend and soldier. We were on the same humvee all day on 12 September, 2004, the day before he was killed in action. We had a great time that day. I try to remember that day. My son Thomas Hagy Ayars is named for Sgt. Thomas and SSgt Hagy. I miss both of you."

"I never want to forget the sacrifices of so many young men and women. I am so proud it makes me cry. I understand in theory only that war is a part of human nature but so is love and caring. I wish I could take the families pain away but I can't. I am committed to loving ALL people, myself and our environment. I am committed to working on my happiness everyday because so many have died for my freedom to live my life. Thank you is not enough but it is all I have. All my love and respect. ogersteiner@yahoo.com

"To the family of Carl Thomas,
I remember Carl from MHS class of 95 and he was an interesting person, he was kind and diligent, when I heard of his passing it was a double blow for me, for my older brother also an MHS graduate of 94 was killed in Iraq as well. Knowing who Carl was and the friendship he shared with me and my brother lets me further know that they are there in heaven watching over us know, making sure we think before we act and that we are careful. I pray you find contentment and know that he is always with you. To my fellow alumni and comrade, I love you as a friend and as a fellow veteran of the armed services."

"For the Family of Carl Thomas,
I read the biographical note about your loved-one on the CNN site. My son also had the nickname of 'Critter' as a child. The son of my best friend is now in a college ROTC program, in his second year on his way to becoming a Marine. She sent me a picture of him and his friends in their uniforms, and as in all pictures of young soldiers, there is such a promise of youth. I cannot begin to imagine your loss, and all that you had hoped for your young man. Know that from now on, I will think of one other 'Critter', and hold you in my heart."

"My thoughts and prayers go out the families of Sgt Carl Thomas. I heard about the tragic accident from the detroit lions website. My friend Bobby Carrol who is a soldier in his cavalry 1-12, posted a note on the site, stating that Sgt Thomas was happy the morning he died because the Lions had won there first game. Once again I am terribly sorry for your loss, and we want all our troops and freinds to return home. Sgt Thomas and so many others are true heroes of our country. They will never be forgotten. Help is on the way."
