Shelton died in Bayji, Iraq, when his forward operating base was attacked by enemy forces using mortars. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Died on December 3, 2005.
