"I am a recently retired Marine Corp GySgt from Houston, who retired to San Antonio. I met Gene at the greatest place to meet marines..boot camp. Plt 3082 was 90% from Texas and our Drill Instructors never let us forget. Us Texas boys bonded and I had the pleasure and honor to live through the hell of boot camp with him. We then went to SOI and spent two weeks on mess duty before I went to ITB and he went MCT. Through that short period of time we felt that we knew each other forever because hell we made it though boot camp together. I last saw Gene in 2001 at Camp Lejeune, he was at Camp Johnson as an Instructor at the Motor T school and I was with 1/6, we were both Sgt's 5 years after being privates at boot camp. We did what marines do partied until the sun rose, and then said we see each other soon. I left on deployment that summer and then would be deployed on and off again for the next four years. It was an honor to have served with Gene and to of earned the title of Marine with him, God Bless you and Semper Fi!"

"I served with Gene at Camp Pendleton in 2002 with 1st Med Bn. I was the youngest and smallest Marine in the Platoon but that didn't matter. Gene was not only my PLT SGT, but my friend, and a great leader as well. My fondest memory of him is when he asked me " Where are you from Paez?" I replied: Memphis,TN. Gene replied: Bullsh*t There arent any Mexicans in Tennessee, you little Sh*t! Thats where i got my nickname of Little Sh*t. None the less at only 5'4", I felt 7' with Gene as my PLT SGT... RIP

"I still can't believe its been almost 9 years since Gene has been gone. As we approach Veterans Day I was asked to write a letter to my penpal about a special Veteran in my life and I wrote about Gene. I knew him only for a short time but I'm happy that I had the opportunity to have him as a friend. Gene was truly a great person, fun, and kind hearted. From reading other messages I can see he was a great leader and Marine. I pray he is resting in peace and that the Ramirez family are doing well."

"Normally people will say great things about someone's passing out of respect however, Gene Ramirez was truly a great guy. I had the pleasure of serving with him in Med Bn back in 2002-2003. I saw how he interacted with his MT Marines and his style of Leadership was second to none. It has been 9 years just about and he is still an inspiration to my style of Leadership, he was very approachable when others were not. To his family, you son was truly a great human being; thank you for letting us know him."

"To the Ramirez Family,
Gene was my Marine. I empowered him to do much more than many of my Marines. As a new SSgt in combat, he really stepped up. I still remember that night he and Cpl Heredia went on the mission to link up with the CSSB convoy to lead it back to our position as it carried critical supplies. His vehicle never made it. Upon getting him back to medical, I knew his condition was very serious but I really thought he would pull through, especially with the quality care provided by the Navy surgeons whoi were just minutes away by helicopter. The sun came up and I was on watch when one of my LTs returned from the COC with the news of his passing. It was a hard blow and he was the first Marine I had ever lost in peacetime or combat. I constantly think of Gene Ramirez and Joseph Heredia. Those two brave Marines paid the ultimate sacrifice and for that, I cannot and will not ever forget what they did for our Country and Corps. May they rest in peace.

"Gene was a great guy, we actually served on color guard together at Camp Pendleton. I cant beleive I just heard about this, but I have been out of the service since 2005. He was a great guy that his Marines respected alot. I guess its true what the say, "Real Heroes never make it back." RIP Devil Dog, my thoughts and prayers are with your family."

"To Mr. and Mrs. Ramirez What an absolute pleasure it was to have served with your Son he was Marines Marine!Gene was in my Company, I was his 1st Sgt and he was a Great Marine! He had just picked up SSGT on 1 OCT 2004 and was asking me about recruiting duty and going back to Texas to recruit. I am a Texan so he and I hit if off right away. As I read what others have written about him all remember the big SMILE that he had. I remember coming off checking on the guard Marines and it being really hot and Gene had the a fake beer that we were allowed to have that they sent us to drink that didn't really taste good but the boys down in motor T always kept it cold and so for a minute is tasted real and he had that BIG SMILE on his face like always.
I also remember hearing that when Gene and Cpl Heredia were hit that as the Corpsman were working on him that he said I'm not that bad take care of Cpl Heredia and that Cpl Heredia said the same thing those to guys are true examples of Marine Corps leaders.
I remember the Marine Corps birthday every Nov 10th but its bitter sweet as I also remember that that’s the day Gene "GAVE ALL" for his Marines, the unit, his Corps and Country. I tell anyone who will listen to me about Gene and even more so when they talk about not going to the Marine Corps ball, how I am sure he would love to be there, so go to the Marine Corps ball, you go in his Honor and have beer for him! The Corps misses Gene.... Semper Fi."

"To the family of Gene Ramirez:
Sorry for your lose, and my prayers go out to you all, the Ramirez family and friends.
I am proud to say Gene and I became Marines at the same time, April 19th, 1996. Gene and I, and a guy by the name of Lopez, got the best and a laugh here and there out of the D.I.'s. They'd call him WHALER, me LOPEZ, and Lopez, RAMIREZ. D.I.'s didn't know until they turned around and found Ramirez behind them, that got a grin out of the D.I.'s ever once in a while. They even asked us once if we were brothers, then it was no sir....now I'd say yes sir, he his my brother. My heart dropped and it was hard to swallow the lump in my throght when I seen his picture pop up on the television.
And to Gene, thanks Brother!"

"I knew Gene during OIF1, as part of Charlie Surgical Company. He was a good guy to be around, quick to smile, and one heck of a poker player. Myself, Gene, and 3-4 others had our own little poker room set up. Somehow Gene finagled an air conditioning unit and I think he bribed somebody to have it connected to a generator. We also, occasionally, went on rides out into some surrounding cities and could buy some local beer. So here we are in Iraq, its 140 degrees outside, chilling in an air-conditioned room drinking ice cool beer playing poker! That is what I’ll remember about Gene, one hell of a guy. Thank you for giving me the privilege of knowing you, you are missed!"
