Fallen Heroes of Operation Iraqi Freedom

Remembering the servicemembers who died in the service of their country.

Army Spc. George A. Mitchell

35, of Rawlings, Maryland.
Died of wounds received from an enemy rocket attack south of Baghdad. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Infantry Division, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, Fort Stewart, Georgia. Died on April 7, 2003.

I would like to give you a little more information on SPC George A. Mitchell. He leaves behind a wife, Brenda Mitchell a daughter Bailee Mitchell (3 1/2 years old) and a son Joshua Mitchell (2 years old). He also has a 10 year old son by a previous marriage Christopher Mitchell. George loved his children very much and was proud of every accomplishment they had no matter how big or small. His love for the outdoors got him involved in landscaping, gardening, and hunting. He was a member of the Western MD Gun Dog Association where he proudly displayed his Beagle Dogs alongside his Father.

George was very proud of his career in the Army. After 9-11 he knew that the Army would play a vital roll in securing world peace and he surrendered his reserve status in May of 2002 to join the Army full-time. Having served in Desert Storm, he felt that the job there was left incomplete and was overjoyed at going back to finish it. He was behind the mission he was on and knew that 85 million Iraqi people would have a chance for a far better way of life. He was well aware of the price tag for freedom, but knowing that he had the support of his family, friends, church and his Country behind him and the ultimate outcome for everyone was worth the risk.

The George A. Mitchell Memorial Fund has been set up at the First United Bank & Trust in Keyser, West Virginia for his children.

Sincerely,

Brenda S. Mitchell

"SPC George Mitchell
Thank you for your sacrifice and service! I was there with you April 7th 2003! I was probably about 25 or 30 yards away from where you died when it happen! There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about you and our other fellow soldiers who died that day. Serving with you was truly an honor! To your family thank you! I live here in WV and it has taken me over 13 years to find the nerve to try and reach out to you! Would love to meet you in person some day! Thank you so much and I'm so so sorry for your loss!"

"Dear Mitchell Family,
I recently purchased a bracelet from the website inourhearts.org and was assigned George's information. I wanted you to know how much I appreciated his service. I have the greatest respect for not only those who serve, but for their families at home. I understand the fear of having someone you love in the army, but can't imagine the pain you are going through. I am truly sorry for your loss and will keep your family in my prayers."

Although this is how he would have wanted to go it was far tooo soon. He had so much to give to his new family and the Army. He talked about both a lot. My deepest condolences to you and the children."

"Hey there George buddy, Its almost the 5 year anniversary when we crossed the border friend and I thought of you bud. Your family and those who knew you best with much love will continue to praise your name and the memories you left with us, we will continue to keep you with us in spirit. I want to thank you for leading the way for me as a relatively new soldier, you came into my life by becoming my roommate when you came to Ft. Stewart. You were wise as you were no stranger having been in the Army for 13 years and have already been in the first conflict with those....sorry I just hate them all so much man. You gave me insight in all aspects of the army in which I continue to follow in civilian life. Thanks bro and I'll see you again! Much Love"

"Its been a while..the kids are growing up so fast. Bailee is beautiful and Josh is a stubborn little boy (taking after his father :-). I love you and i can't wait till we meet again."
Nicole (neice) of Harrisburg

"George,
It's been 4 yrs since you left us.Things will never be the same. We spent a few days with Brenda and the kids. They have grown so much. Josh has so much of you. Looks, attitude and of course....bull-headed.Bailee is growing into a beautiful girl. I helped her learn to ride her bike without training wheels. It was great. I felt wonderful doing that for you. But I'll never take your place. Brenda is a strong woman. She definately has her hands full. But she's doing a wonderful job.
As I rode through the mountains I could only think of you and how much you would have enjoyed being there. But then I remembered....you were there.... watching over all of us.
Till we meet again. Love you bro."
David Mitchell-Brother of Harrisburg,PA

"George,
You are the first person I think of when another one of our family members (Soldiers) fall. I always remember all the jokes we played on each other in school just like it was yesterday. The best time I had is back in '91 coming back from the Gulf and you took my camera and took those pic's when we flew over the Alps, they came out great. Miss the jokes and most of all the coffee. If anyone wanted to know what the term of an American Soldier was, I would just tell them to research a man named Gearge Mitchell. One of the Army's finest and proudest. Thanks for being a good friend George, you will never be forgotten."

And kept in touch for awhile after still. It saddens me to miss a Brother as good as he was. And my heart and prayers goes out to his Family. I am troubled now as I ponder his friendship and our relationship thru many yrs. I only wish I could have said my great respect and admiration to him. God Bless America, and all who still serve. I shall remember always your giving friendship and all your time and talks we had, Miss you "Mitch" !!!!"

"In Loving Memory..Its been a year..

At the rising of the sun and at its going down, We remember them.
At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of Winter, We remember them.
At the opening of buds and in the rebirth of Spring, We remember them.
At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of Summer, We remember them.
At the rustling of leaves and the beauty of Autumn, We remember them.
At the beginning of the year and when it ends, We remember them.
As long as we live, they too will live;
for they are now a part of us, as we remember them.
Rest in Peace Dear Soldier!! We will NEVER FORGET!"

"On the anniversary of my step-son's death, George A. Mitchell Jr. (April 7th,2003) I felt impressed to share some of my thoughts.

He was a unique person. One who walked to the beat of his own drummer. One beat was the dedication he showed to those he loved.

His dad, George A. Mitchell Sr., His Idol, had a very special place in this soldiers heart. I witnessed his need & desire to please his dad & make him proud of him.

That my dear readers he has done. George Sr. has always stood behind/beside his son and the dedication he made to the Army. This was the life that George Jr. connected with, as the military ran in his blood.

George Jr. has a brother Dave they both served 4 years in Germany. He also has a brother (Joe)in the Navy, stationed on the USS George Washington. A brother Gabriel age (11) still working through the past year. George & Gabe did things together with dad & Gabe thought allot of George.

George has a son Christopher who is also 11. Gabe & Chris are 6 weeks apart in age & have a special bond. "fighting is part of it" - (smile) He also has two smaller children, a daughter - Bailee and a son - Josh.

Along with many other family & friends we will truly miss him. George died doing what he loved. I think of that often as a source of comfort, because he still played knowing the cost.

George you are "MY HERO"
I LOVE YOU!"
Darlene (step-mom) of Enola, Pa.

"When I first heard that George was killed, it didn't register. I was talking to Howard Buch, who was George and I's 1st Sgt. in the 121 and he helped me realize who George was. We had served together in the 1st war. He was a quiet young man who worked as an Armorer. He went about doing his job well. It's hard to believe that he's gone. My prayers are with him and his family."

"time is going by and the pain is still so new i miss you and love you so much"
Cynthia Mitchell of lebanon pa

"To Cynthia, I have a son in Afghanistan. I have read your messages and I wish there was something I could do for you. The loss and pain you are feeling I can not imagine. You are going through what I pray over and over to God to never let happen to Justin or me, every day. I think of all the mothers who have lost their children in war and can only imagine what it would be like to find out that my child had died so far away.

I read all the letters on this site about all the soldiers and what their families and friends write about them. I read because I feel everyone should know who died for all of us and how much they are missed. I feel guilty that my son is still alive and so many others are not. I wish there was something I could do that would take away your pain. I'm so sorry that your son George is gone.

But I do know that you will see him again, just hold on to that. I pray for God to help you. George is fine, it's those of us that are left behind that need the help. George is where we will all eventially will be, with God and all those that we love."

"To the Family of SPC Mitchell-

You have my heart felt condolences about George. I know that words can not express what you are going through.

I was CPL Henry Brown's platoon leader when he first arrived in Germany. It is comforting to me to know that he was surrounded by wonderful people and that you have reached out to his wife.

Again, my deepest sympathy. Let him live on in your precious memories and be comforted to know that he is a hero."

"AS SPC MITCHELLS SUPERVISOR WHEN HE FIRST ARRIVED AT FT STEWART, I ONLY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE WITH THIS GREAT MAN FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. SADLY, SPC MITCHELL WAS MY REPLACEMENT WHEN I LEFT MY UNIT (HHC 2D BDE) JUST PRIOR TO THEM DEPLOYING, ITS HARD TO DISCRIBE THE FEELING I HAVE KNOWING THAT IF I HAD NOT LEFT HE WOULD STILL BE ALIVE, AND MY FAMILLY WOULD BE WITHOUT ME. I SHOULD HAVE GONE WITH MY UNIT, I SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE - NOT HIM. MY WIFE AND FAMILY DO NOT UNDERSTAND MY FEELINGS BUT I KNOW OTHER NCO'S OUT THERE DO. SPC MITCHELL COULD ALWAYS MAKE A PERSON LAUGH, ALWAYS GOT THE MISSION DONE, AND WAS A GREAT PERSON IN GENERAL TO KNOW. I ENJOYED MY TIME SPENT WITH HIM AND I'M SURE HE MADE THE BEST OUT OF BEING OVER THERE AND ENJOYED SERVING HIS COUNTRY. SPC MITCHELL WAS A GREAT MAN, SOLDIER AND FATHER, MY DEEPEST SORROW AND MOST SINCERE PRAYERS GO OUT TO HIS FAMILY."
