"To the Marshall Family:

There is not a day that goes by that I do not think of the Soldiers of 1/21FA especially, SPC James Marshall, SPC Bradley Kritzer and SPC Luis Carbello. These young men paid the ultimate sacrifice and I will always be indebted to them. Your son was very special, a hard working Soldier that wanted to achieve everything he attempted. As their Executive Officer(XO), I could not have asked for finer men lead into battle and I regret everyday not being able to get them home alive. I hope and pray that your family has found peace in the midst of the storms and know that all of us, their brothers in arms, are thinking of them."
MAJ (R)Rodney L. Davis of Bowie, MD

"Mrs Marshall,
I was the Casualty Officer that delivered the message about James to you that early morning in May. Often I see things that remind me of that day...from the way you talked about him, to the way that your mother and niece quickly were by your side. I remember every word you spoke to me. I re-live that day each time I drive near Tulsa. Your faith that day was, and still is an inspiration.
I had done other notifications over a 13 month span, and thoughts of you and your family from that day helped to get me through some difficult days.
I am retired now, but still think of your family often. Memories of being in 1-21 myself (before James was assigned there) often made me feel as if there was an immediate bond between me and the memory of James.
I recently stumbled across an old magazine that talks about that day. PFC Christopher Fernandez was awarded a Silver Star for his actions during an attack that day that we lost James. This man was also assigned to A 1/21 so its safe to guess that this was the same incident. It is amazing to read what this young man did in order to attempt to save James and his fellow Soldiers.
I hope this message finds you and your family doing well."
SFC (retired) Benerval Grimes of Lawton, OK.

"Dear James,
It has been 5 years since we talked last and with each day I am saddened that we had to lose you, Bradley, and Adalfo so soon. I got out of the Army because of what happened and how it happened while we were in Iraq.....I didn't want to have to watch another soldier, friend, and brother leave this earth in the manner that you guys did. To the parents of the 3 Brave and Wonderful Soldiers of Alpha Btry 1/21 FA I am deeply sorry for your loss. May GOD bless you and I will keep you in my prayers."

"Dear James,
In 19 years of service to our nation, and having the unique oppurtunity to serve with so many fantastic Soldiers it was my pleasure to meet you and work with you. To see the way you handled your Platoon, the attention to detail to ensure that everything was right all the time. Not for the sake of just doing it, but doing it because it was the right thing for your men! You are indeed a Soldiers, Soldier and I hope to live up to the high standard you have set for all Cavalrymen to follow.

The day your life was taken, I was shocked, utter disbelief. I heard it across the radio and threw my hand mic across my truck, put my head in my hands and took a moment...a moment to reflect on the James Marshall that was always looking out for his men, a moment for your family who had lost a husband, a father and a friend. You inspired all the Scouts in my Troop to perform to a "SFC Marshall" standard. When I learned of how the events unfolded that day I was not shocked, it was you being you. To sub as the gunner so that he would not be harmed was the SFC Marshall I had known; always looking after Soldiers. You gave the ultimate sacrafice for a Soldier. You, my brother, will always be a heroe in my eyes, the inspiration when things are tough, and forever a friend! I'll see you in Fiddler's Green brother!"
1SG James A. Baugh, E Troop 9th Cavalry of Baghdad, Iraq

"I need to see a picture of this James Marshall when I was in the Army my best friend ever had this same name and I know at the time his family was in Lodi, California Please let me know if this is my Marshall :(
I'm saddened by every loss of life, soldiers falling as they fight for freedom. The comfort in it all is that they were doing something they believed in and made the choice to serve our country and protect it at all cost.
Godspeed to James's family."

"Dear Marshall family,
I visit this website almost everyday, as I am sure you do as well. I have wanted to write something to help comfort you, but I know there are no such words. I am PFC Bradley Kritzer's cousin. His death has affected my family in so many ways. Ways that I know only another family who has gone through this can understand. Just know that I think of your family and James everyday. I heard his and Brad's names on the Early Show last week while I was eating my breakfast, and I cried the whole way to work for them. They were two magnificent young men who will never be forgotten. Just know that there are others out here that know how you are feeling right now. Even after time has passed, the pain just doesn't go away. But someday, we will move on...we will never forget, but we WILL move on. I will continue to keep you in my thoughts every time I think of Brad. Thank you for raising such a brave, fine soldier. I will forever remember the sacrifice that he and Brad made for us."
Sincerely, Rachel E. Kester of Curwensville, PA/ USA
