"Sir, I miss you. I was your personal 11B and also your driver, you were my TC and CO, right up until 3 weeks before your fateful deployment. I wouldíve been in the driverís seat, had I not been honorably discharged under single parent (5-8) circumstances. I didnít have a choice.. I couldnít deploy. I donít know why things happened the way they did, but I think about it everyday. Iíve talked to God about it many, many times. I pray your family found peace these many years later. It is Memorial Day weekend 2018. I will never forget.. EVER! Hooah!"

"Life can change in a flash, for no apparent reason.

Captain James A. Funkhouser and I never met. But he will always be in my thoughts, and his family in my prayers.

You see, I was stationed in Baghdad with the 4th Infantry Division in 2006. As a public affairs officer, my job was to facilitate embedded media engagements in and around the Baghdad area. On occasion I would act as escort, typically for top-tier news outlets, i.e., CBS.

Memorial Day morning in Baghdad, I was to link up with the CBS news crew via the 4th BCT, 4ID in the International Zone. I would be Kimberly Dozierís escort that day. A very unexpected turn of events occurred that morning. The mission changed as did the escort assignment. To this day, I donít know why this change occurred.

Captain James A. Funkhouser took my place that Memorial Day morning. Again, he will always be in my thoughts, and his family in my prayers.

"To the wife and family of Cpt. James Funkhouser of Katy, Texas:

I should have written you sooner to express my deepest sympathy to your family upon the death of your husband. I pray for our brave troops daily. I know the horrors of war as my own son, Joseph Fankhauser, has been in Iraq twice in the Marines. The fact that we are all Americans, have someone we love deeply in the military, and the similiarities in names binds us together. God Bless America & your family.

With Christian Love,
