"November 27 2018: I'm sitting here at ALC and I have to look at slides on IED attacks and then write about what I read. And then I realize that the anniversary of the longest day of my life is almost here again. Ralph and I traded weapons in Kuwait or shortly after we departed to enter Iraq. He thought it was silly for him to be the smallest person in the platoon and carrying a SAW(my battles will know what that means). So, I gave him my M16. On that dreaded day, I was suppose to be a gunner on the vehicle that Ralph was driving. Most people don't know that he didn't typically drive in Iraq. No one on that convoy did anything to deserve what happened to him. But, any of us who served with him can and will tell you that he was a hero. He was good to those around him and he made you want to be a better person. I still miss him. But, I'm grateful that God gave us all that time to know him. Thank you Ralph for your sacrifice. It was an honor to serve with you."

"Man oh man! There's not year that goes by that I don't think about you my friend. We use to argue so much and you would always find a way to crack a joke to make to talk to you again. That was your way. I will never forget the last visit you paid to me and the last conversation we had. I appreciate what you said and I could see the sincerity in your eyes. I will never share that conversation with anyone. I miss u shawty!!!"

"What's up lil bro? Times been real hard without you around I think about you everyday and wonder what we would be getting into these days. I keep seeing us passing each other going down the hallway that morning before you left on your convoy. You had your usual smile and that swagger to your step that you were well known for having. I remember us stopping for a minute to talk and you telling me that you were getting ready to go on leave in two days to see your new born. I'm sorry bro that you never got that chance to see your little twin. As long as I'm living you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace lil bro rest in peace."

"We knew the war was going on and people were losing their loved ones but it was so hard to believe it when it happened so close to home. Raph was a funny and cool guy who always thought he could play basketball when I used to go and hoop over his house, I always told him to stick to football. It hurt to know this happen to my homeboy but he is in a better place where there are no wars and worries. So, he is now sitting high looking down low with the Lord over "ALL". See ya one day "Pretty boy Floyd""

"Raph, I can't put into words how much you are loved and missed. I still haven't come to grips with the fact that you are gone, but I think that we can all rest easily knowing that you left behind wonderful and lasting memories of you. I think about you everyday. Life is just not the same without your presence. You are our Guardian Angel, and your light will continue to shine down on us until we see you again in Heaven."

"To the mother of Army SPC.Raphael S. Davis, let me say hello to you and your family. I heard about your lost. I hope that when you firgure out who I am you know that I am sinsere when I say God loves you. God loves us all and for that reason alone sometimes He calls us home early. Hold on to God,s unchanging hand. Its been 30 years since we sit in class and recited our "Hi-que" "There was an old lady from Hack, Who bent in like she had no back, and as she began to bow and to bend, her body turned in like a sack." I hope these words, written by you in high school bring a smile to your face.I hope they make you realize that though love-ones are sometimes taken early, God is merciful because he leaves old friends around to remind us how long we have been on this planet. I pray these words bring you some comfort in knowing that an old classmate heard about your lost and shares your grief. If you and your family ever visit the Civil Rights Museum of Memphis,Tn., stop by and say hello to an old classmate. I work at Fire Station #2, The Station is in front of the Museum. May God continue to keep our families in His loving care."

"THE FINAL INSPECTION
The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell.""
Sgt. Ross of Mississippi
"Merry Christmas From Heaven
I still hear the songs
I still see the lights
I still feel your love
on cold wintery nights
I still share your hopes
and all of your cares
I'll even remind you
to please say your prayers
I just want to tell you
you still make me proud
You stand head and shoulders
above all the crowd
Keep trying each moment
to stay in His grace
I came here before you
to help set your place
You don't have to be
perfect all of the time
He forgives you the slip
If you continue the climb
To my family and friends
please be thankful today
I'm still close beside you
In a new special way
I love you all dearly
now don't shed a tear
Cause I'm spending my
Christmas with Jesus this year"

"Raphael, this is the Memorial Day weekend. A time to honor and remember our heroes who have given their lives for their country. I am thinking of you today just as I do every day. You must have been some kind of special because there is always something that remind me of you and yet I never met you. I pray that your family, friends, and the citizen of Tutwiler,Webb, and the Delta as a whole never let your memory die. One day I hope to see your name on a street, building, or some other monument. I would like to see a scholarship fund started in your memory. There are many things we can do to preserve your memory. You are not buried in the Arlington National Cemetery but you are as honorable and heroic. You will NEVER be forgotten.
I pray your soul is with Christ."
