Vanderhorn died in As Sinia, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during patrol operations. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Died on January 1, 2006.
