"I was an officer in Sheldon's unit. I served and got to know this honest strong and brave man. I wanted to share something I wrote for him and someday I'd like to visit his grave and pay a proper respect. Its taken years for me to recover and get to where I can remember and reflect on life I want people to know and I wont ever forget. My best wishes to Sheldons family

Thank you for reading this
Here you go
Memorial Day coming up... Its a deeply personal holiday for me.

What a humbling honor to have experienced and shared some of my life with awesome, brave and amazing soldiers. This memorial day I'm taking the opportunity to remember and reflect.

I've come to meet and call my friend some awesome soldiers , all of them have shared so many stories of love and sacrifice... the respect I have runs deeper and is more profound. I am in awe ....

Beyond the noise that sometimes clouds our lives, what soldiers do is show us through example what we all aspire to be.
Soldiers love each other, and more than anything, soldiers are capable of extreme love. Thats what brings such different people together across all this space and time...
Soldiers are amazing bc of what they do and the best of them give themselves in the ultimate act of love.

They die...

They do so without fully knowing or without even understanding.
But they FEEL the truth of life....

Love

Alot to Remember and Reflect on, and, maybe, a chance for all of us, to Recommit to something

We have a chance to earn this life , make this place better in someway for having been here. Lets not waste it.

This is Sheldon Hawk-eagle a soldier I was able to share my life with

I am still trying to be what he was years ago...

I met Sheldon in 101st Airborne Div when he blew past me on a 2 mile run at FT Campbell. Finishing ahead of me, turned around and ran back with me for another 1/2 mile. I thought the guy was messing with me the way enlisted like to "stick it to an officer" and trust me I had all sorts of plans for PFC Hawkeagle later that day (none of them "awesome" for him.)
But when we finished, he ran to the timer's table and came back with my run time on a slip of paper and "high fived" me (PFC to officer high fives aren't standard :))
I realized he was sincere, he just really wanted me to have a good run time. I didn't know what to make of him.

We went to Iraq and I worried so much about him and the junior soldiers. For a while I only took the senior Non Commissioned Officers out. But that wasn't a good strategy. Sheldon started coming on patrols with us and I found myself always checking where he was or keeping him close.

I shouldn't have worried. Sheldon was steady.
He didn't flinch.

Ever...

He stayed the same honest person and always played with the dogs or the kids when we had down time - he'd motivate me to be better at life and he didn't even know it.

My friend Sheldon died on Nov 15th 2003 in a helicopter crash in Mosul Iraq.

Its only recently that I've come to understand the need and the value of memorialization. Because a lot of people won't ever know his story, and I don't want to forget it.

So, this Memorial day - if you're having a cold beverage and enjoying the holiday take a moment to tip your glass for Sheldon and all the other men and women who didn't flinch....

Rest in peace Sheldon you won't be forgotten"

"I want to say that I miss you a lot and it’s been crazy with out you! I remember how you were the only one who called me Queen Bee🤎 (I convinced mom to get me a tattoo) it’s been almost 20 years since Jesus called you home. I always remember how you were. I know your in heaven and I am sorry for the life you’ve had but I know as a Christian death is a glorious beginning. And I know the Bible says let the dead bury their dead but big bro it’s hard,I see people who were mean to you make shows of how ‘close’ y’all were and benefit off of you now that your gone, I see guilty people drink in your name or receive gifts in your name, I see people who left you when you were alive talk about you like they were there. I know God would want us to love I know you would say forgive but brother it’s hard. I see the woman who raised you who was there for you grow older I see your clothes and flag every day and now I am older than you were and it’s crazy. I see how people lost themselves in grief and guilt. I could use one of your hugs and prayers. I know God can and will bring good from this and that he doesn’t waste anything. I pray for peace for my mom who raised you I know she’s not recognized for it because of family drama but I also know she didn’t do it for the recognition. Please say a prayer for me and mom and my brothers and the kids you never got to meet for peace for addiction to leave and for truth to come to light. It’s been crazy growing up seeing all of this. But I know life is temporary and heaven is forever please pray for the salvation of our family members and sobriety. Miss you big bro 🤎 your life will make an impact and until I see you again 🤎"

"Dear Sheldon R. Hawk Eagle’s Family,

I Jacee Cooke would like to tell you I’m so very sorry about your lost. I know it’s hard to lose a loved one. I know Sheldon was probably a good person to have around. He was probably funny, crazy, caring, loving, and also a very brave person because he gave his life to fight for our country. He wanted to show his respect to our country. I think he did a very good job because you have to be brave to give your life. He helped us today how we have our freedom, and what we have today. I know it had to been hard to lose someone around a holiday, and celebrating things without them there but you know they are there with your family in spirit."

"To the friends and family of Sheldon Hawk Eagle,
In honor of PFC. Sheldon Hawk Eagle
I recently viewed the “Fallen Heroes” memorial at my school. I wanted to show my appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice PFC. Sheldon Hawk Eagle has given to our state of South Dakota and our country. This exhibit made me realize the importance of our military and the ultimate sacrifice PFC Hawk Eagle gave for our freedom. I understand what a great soldier and talented person he was. I realize that he is missed very much.

"Soon to be 5 years and counting, since I last got to see or talk to you. You were the best Soldier I ever had a chance to lead. I struggle everyday with my guilt. Getting a chance to meet your family and learn to know you as "Wanbli Ohitika", truly allowed me to see things in a new perspective. Although it still hurts, I try and make you guys proud by you and what I try and do for our wounded Soldiers. It would be difficult to spell out my nickname for you, just to let you know, I still find myself doing it from time to time. I miss you brother. "Cousin Sheldon. I only seen pictures of you around Eagle Butte and from Uncle Harvey I can see that you were trying to do your best. I am now trying my best to get in the USMC. I guess Uncle Harvey got the idea of becoming a United States Marine stuck in my head and the determination in my heart. I want to become a teacher if I can get through my enlistment term. But I will help carry out you dream. I want to help people and you have helped me by inspiring to do it by giving it your all. You didn't faulter when you passed on, You just passed on the dedication. I thank you. Even though you never knew me I know Uncle Harvey. He has a good heart and helped me many times. Today is a nice january day . The sun is shining and I am in my classroom with my students and they are quietly drawing pictures. my mind has wandered off to a place of great honor, and I wish for the people to know that I remember a wica wawoptetusni, (an accomplished man) that i have never met, but only learned of him through his great gift to us. We can feel him and what he has given to us in our daily lives and his gift shall be enjoyed for generations to come. you see his gift is our freedom, the freedom we should all cherish more today than we did yesterday. Great sacrifice is what makes the people stronger. Today as my mind drifts back to my students and I realize what we have because of the warriors like Sheldon Hawk Eagle I am humbled before such a great presence, they are all here watching over the people and making sure that we can enjoy today...

"To the family of Sheldon R. Hawk:

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 29 May. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “Remembering Our Freedom.” A former Soldier and country music songwriter and performer “Rockie” will pay a special musical tribute. At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

All over the world the faces of living ones are alike.
With tenderness they have come up out of the ground.
Look upon your children that they may face the winds
And walk the good road to the Day of Quiet.

Give us the strength to understand, And the eyes to see.
Teach us to walk the soft Earth as relatives To all that live.

"There are many prayers going out to the HawkEagle family and tiospaye. Only Creator knows what you are going through but there are many people and families that have your family and loss in their hearts and thoughts. May Creator walk with you, have pity on you and watch over you and may Sheldon find his way on the milkyway to his people's and relative's camp. May Tunkasila be with you all."
