"Nine years later, and I still find myself being drawn to this site, and others like it. It doesn't seem real to me that Danny would be over 30 now, rather than that 20 something that is engrained in my memory. To this day I am still driven to live up to the legacy that he and Doug left behind. God speed to both of you. Fair winds and following seas."

"Hello Everyone,

I don't know where to start...but I first want to thank God for the service men that knew my dear brother personally. To see your messages and to hear your heart through simple words means the world to me. I WANTED SO SO SO BAD FOR THE LONGEST TIME AND EVEN NOW TO WRITE YOU AND TO HAVE JOINED YOU IN THE GIEVING PROCESS AND TIME...If I could I would love a chance to still keep in touch with anyone who was close to him and in his company.

Thank you all from around the country for your love and prayers."

"Hoorah Danny. it's been five years and I still think about you and Doug every day. I hope I'm making you both proud of me in everything I do, and I can't wait to see you one day and argue over which is better, the Army or the Marine Corps. (No offense bro, but the Marine Corps is gonna win.)"
Brandy Bartels of Monterey, CA

"So much time has passed since the fall of this Great American Hero, but when I stumbled upon this website I felt compelled to leave a note of my condolences, and respects. Thank you for your service to our Great Nation, my brother. Although I never knew you, I feel some sort of relationship to you. I support all our troops past, and present, and Honor their sacrifice, as well as the sacrifice of your family members, and those who knew you as a friend. I cannot express how finding this information makes me feel; perhaps the world is a smaller place than we first thought. As I know that GOD has taken you into his care, and that your blood brother (Paul) is with you; leads me to believe that you were not meant to be apart in Life or in death. To the family of the Bartels boys, rest in Peace knowing, they're both in a better place, and though they're gone they will Never be Forgotten. I hope and pray that we can all meet upon GOD's Golden Shore someday...

"I am stationed in Iraq with 4-14 Cav. Daniel was my driver on my Stryker for over 2 years. I knew him extrmemly well and his death hit me hard. I wanted to write his family, but could not bring myself to it. I was finding it very hard to explain my sympathy for what happen. So, I found this web site (while I am on leave right now) and am hoping that someone who know's his family personnally, sees this and lets them know how very sorry I am for their loss and how I think of him every day. My wife and I are truly sorry and will always remember him as we knew him. Thank you!"

"To Dan's family -
I am a service member and knew Dan well in high school. He was a passionate, genuine and open person who always put a smile on my face. He taught me a lot about life, about kindness, and now about honor. I know I can't take away your pain or begin to fathom your sacrifice, but for what it's worth please know that the cause Dan fought for is a worthy one. I am praying for you."
Aubrey Weger of Orange City, IA
