Remember that time when our families went to the beach together and we all had to stay in one room? We made sure to sleep next to each other and we held hands late at night. You were such a comforting person to be around. It's been 7 yrs today & I can't remember you voice. I hate that. All I have are memories that are starting to fade & become littile fragments. Where ever you are always now that you are missed & loved."

"I rember when MICHAEL would play freeze tag and hide n go seek with me and my sister. Every time i would go to my grandmas house MICHAEL would be wating to play. I was happy that MICHAEL was my uncle if we wernt playing we were watching t.v. MICHAEL was the best because, what he would do for us what ever we needed he was there. I rember that one day when i went to my grandmas house and MICHAEL wasnt there. My aunt vanessa told me that he went to go fight the bad guy so that we would be safe and she also told me that i might not see him for a while. He would alway call or write because of corse you no MICHAEL he is the type to do stuff like that. I rember the sad day when my aunt called and she was crying and said that she wanted to talk to my dad. When they got off the phone we rushed to my grandmas house.standing in the living room were two guys dressed up so i thought
MICHAEL was there so i ran around calling his name because, i new he would try to scare me. My dad grabbed me and told me that MICHAEl had died i started bursting out in tears screaming his name and i will never forget that day or MICHAELS face. I am now 13 and i still cry to this day thinking about MICHAEL but i just have to tell my self he is now in JESUS kindom and will be safe....... I no MICHAEL isnt my uncle anymore but i will always rember him as my HERO UNCLE AND NOTHING WILL CHANGE THAT.. MICHAEL " WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY". When i grow up i want to be a MARINE and become a VETERAN like the people in my family... R.I.P. MICHAEL PAUL BARREA I LOVE YOU."

"To A Fallen Hero..........I recall when you first arrived to this unit (3/67th) as a private...I would tell people that you were my little brother. I was Miguel Barrera from Brownsville Texas and you were Michael Barrera from San Antonio. We had a great time with it. You recieved orders to PCS to Germany, it hit us hard but knew you would do well in this career. I soon Retired shortly and remained in Killeen. One day I heard your name mentioned in the news. I wasn't sure what had happened. The next day I got the paper and read it that you had fallen in Iraq. What's funny my friend, you never did fall. The lord promoted you ahead of all of us to the highest ranking. You my friend, you are a true hero. You gave up your life for our freedom. I will never forget you my little brother. Hope you take care of me like I did you when I reach you.

It's been so long and yet I remember so clearly the day I got the news about Mikey. I am the person that wrote that poem for Mikey and I ran across it today and it brought back so many beautiful memories about Mikey especially his SMILE.:) Just sitting here thinking about him brings a smile to my face and makes me remember his character. No one could ever compete with that. Hope that you guys are all in good health and tell Chela we miss her. email: Arambula_sandra@yahoo.com

"Mikey,

I am still trying to say Goodbye to you but I am still unable to, it's too much to let go of you. My heart still aches knowing that you are gone and this is not a dream, knowing that my Tia & Tio really did lose their son and that Chela really did lose her brother. We all lost. You are still frozen in my mind, not as the man who was the brave soldier that you were. When I think of you I can't help but think of the the kind of child you were. The little boy who had to watch CHiPs every week because they were cops on motorcycles, the little boy who adored the Dukes of Hazzard and wanted to be a "good ol' boy" just like them. You also took pride in your wearing your Superman Underoos, it didn't matter that it was underwear because who cares? They came with a cape! I used to love it when I would watch your Mom blow dry your hair with the round brush and then finish it off with a nice layer of hairspray. Well Mikey, you are better than the guys on CHiPs, they protected the highways of California on their motorcycles, you protected a whole lot more and you got to drive a Tank while doing it. I don't think anyone would argue with me in saying that you were more than a "good ol' boy", you became a Great Young Man and died with honor & without fear like a Man of Steel but you didn't need a cape to be a hero after all.... I love you Primo."

My Name is Kevin Rosas and I was a soldier of Sgt Barrera in Germany, he was the first person I met when I was assigned to Alpha company, and from day one he treated me like a little brother,
he was one of the best frieds Ive ever had, and the best tanker Ive ever known,
he use to tell me "there's three things you could be in life good, great, and excellent, he said those who settle for good will never get passed great and those who strive for excellent will be great when they're alive and for those who know you, will think of you as excellent when you die". he always had good way of putting things. "SGT Barrera was a great NCO and Person, He always thought I was trying to take him down when he walked by but little that he knows is that I was just making way for an NCO. Just coming out of basic he would mess around and try to get me to mess up so that he would smoke me. He let up on me when he found out that I loved the Cowboys to. He would never let anyone talk down about them. I remember playing base ball with him and Campoy in Balad using some BII as a bat and some tape as a ball. Good times. We miss you."

"TO MICHAEL & THE BARRERA FAMILY
MY NAME IS MICHELLE HUERTA AND I HAVE A HUSBAND FIGHTING IN THE WAR. IT IS BECAUSE EVERYONE OF THESE SERVICEMEN AND YOU MICHAEL THAT I MAY LIE NEXT TO MY 1 YR OLD DAUGHTER AND KNOW THAT YOU FOUGHT FOR HER FUTURE AND MAY BE AT EASE THAT THE BRAVE ONES LIKE YOU MAY LIVE ON SPIRITUALLY KNOWING THAT YOU SACRIFICED YOUR LIFE FOR THE LIFE IN ME AND MY CHILD AND FAMILY. GOD BLESS YOUR SOUL."
MICHELLE HUERTA of SAN ANTONIO,TX

"I can only imagine your situation. I volunteered to go down range with 1-35 armor, but I was denied. Sometimes people forget how hard it is on families, especially the spouses. Being a military spouse is one of the hardest things to do. Worrying is apart of the job. May all bless you for your sacrifice, but I can understand if that still isn't enough. All soldiers sacrifice, and so to do their families. Thank you for your support in him, because he ultimately supports us even now."
SPC Kotselas of Baumholder, Germany

"Don’t grieve for me for I am now in a safer place.
I was called upon as a solider to serve my country and now God has
called me to join him to help guard upon those that I love. Every day I
prayed for a peaceful end to all this war, and believe me I tried my hardest.
Never did a moment go by that I did not think about all of you, for all that kept me going was knowing, that I would be home soon. Little did I know that God would call me so soon?
I waited so long to just hold you close to me and to continue life as the family that we had always been. I use to go to sleep thinking of the days’ events and thinking about all of you and all those moments that we had shared. How I would trade all, for just another moment together laughing. Mom /dad you raised me to be a fine young man and it’s for you that I was happy with who I was. Waiting for a letter each day was always a huge moment in a day’s work. You always brought home to me from a thousand miles away. I’m sorry that with the love for my job, I brought so much worry. It was hard to take out of my mind that people were all meant to be free, but that was what you taught me and I thank you. Upon my arrival to heaven, I was a bit lost and confused but ran into God and he showed me the way. I explained to him that I had so many people that I loved and so many that I was looking forward to see for so long. He told me, “Solider Boy, from here you will see them all and help guide them when they need it the most.” I realized that just by looking down everyone was at my reach. We communicated before by letters or a phone call here and there, but now just say a silent prayer and I will be there. Remember me, with each moment that I left engraved in your heart and continue to live life to it’s fullest. Don’t forget that in the long run we will all be together and I will be waiting to show you the paradise that I now live in.

Love your,
Number 1 Tanker

In loving memory of: Sgt. Michael Paul Barrera

"To the Barrera Family:

I came across this web site while trying to track down my cousin on the Internet. I don't believe I am any relation to this particular Michael Barrera (although I do have a first cousin with the same name), nevertheless, I wish to express my condolences and honor the memory of this fallen soldier. It is obvious from reading the postings made by those who did know him that he was loved by many and is sorely missed.

I live in Washington DC and I visit Arlington National Cemetary every Memorial Day to reflect on the debt I owe to those who have served and especially those who payed the ultimate price in the name of our freedom. When I go this year, I will include Michael in my prayers. I trust that God is looking out for him.

"To the family of Michael Barrera.
I graduated with Michael in '95 and I
just wanted to let you know that your son was a wonderful person with a great attitude. He did smile a lot as others describe and that was reflective of his attitude. I can only imagine how hard this is on your family but I can tell you that he will always be remembered. He is obviously very loved by so many people and that also shows you what kind of person he was.
God has just added another soldier to his great Army. God Bless you Michael and God Bless your family."

"To the family of SGT Barrera, I didn't know your loved one personally, but I occupied the same piece of Northern Diyalla Province as he during 2003 and worked with members of A/3-67 Armor. In my faith, there is no greater love than giving one's life for others. Thank you"
Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Cantwell, 324th MP BN

"Michael,
I just read the horrible news today on the 4th ID website. Even though I haven't talked to you in years, I am devastated. You were the best friend I had in bootcamp. You helped make 4 of the roughest months of my life so much easier. Who else would have helped me make those damn hospital corners every day? You were always so quick to help me, even before you made sure your own things were taken care of. Every time I picture you in my mind, you're always smiling. Even in those miserable situations, you made the best of everything. I remember our wrestling matches, playing with the hackey-sac we hid in the radiator, and just sitting in our room talking. You were one of the few people I really missed after getting out of the Army. You were a great friend and the biggest hero I ever met in my life. I hope someday I will see you again. Until then, I will never forget you. Your friend-Derek

"I miss Mike so bad. I remember the day he died he scored five touchdowns against my team. We were fixing an arm on the tank and we needed to get a tool from the mechanics at supper. I remember how proud he was to sit in the commanders position. He deserved to be there. The last thing I remember before the accident is Mike smiling. I know he is smiling now. If I could take it all back brother I would. I miss you so much. You are my inspiration to get better and I won't let you down. To the finest soldier and friend I ever served with. "To the Barrera family...I didn't get to know Mikey and Campoy as well as I wished now..I am with the 324th MP BN that was attached to Mikey's unit since July until November when we safely came home. Mikey's tank and crew were always rotating out but now I wish I'd have taken more time to get to know them better. I do remember always seeing him with a smile..I was face to face with him a few times on the volleyball court. I, being a female, had a quick, accidental run-in with him in the showers..OOPSY..gotta knock first.. :) and he served chow with some jokes and smiles. He seemed like a great guy and now even more i know he is. I didn't get a chance to talk to him the day we lost him do to the position of my vehicle when we dropped off his meal. But i was one of the last to wave goodbye, not knowing it was the last time. Both Mikey and Cucko are stationed in the greatest place anyone could ever hope for with the best commander there is. Being soldiers, they are among the many that are securing the area for when the rest of the world shall join them. My deepest condolenses go out to your family and friends. Sincerely, with Love,

"We have lost another great friend. I can't put my feelings in to words all that well. Other than it's hard to breathe and when I think of Mike get choked up. I remember him totting around his sax in band and he was always smiling. Mike was one of the few people I would come back and visit after I transferred from Somerset to another school. We use to shoot basketball in the front yard. And we talked about the army and what to do and not to do at basic training. Sense I went in early under a split option. Mike, you will be missed.."
