Carey apparently fell into a canal in Iraq and did not resurface. His remains were recovered on May 18. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California. Died on May 18, 2004.

Chaney died in Landstuhl, Germany due to a non-combat related injury. Army Sgt. Dennis A. Corral, 33, of Kearney, Nebraska.
Corral was in a convoy going to the Baghdad International Airport when his vehicle went out of control and rolled over in Baghdad, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas. Died on January 1, 2004.

It is the soldier,
Who salutes the flag,

And whose coffin is draped in the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.
