"I was so touched to read this story, and how Jeffrey gave his life for what he believed in. I am participating in an art competition led by the Ladies Auxiliary for the Veterans of foreign wars. I was wondering if it would be okay with you to honor Cpl Jeffery B. Starr by putting his name in dog tags in my drawing. I want the family of this brave young man and all who he loved and left behind to know that you will always be in my prayers. I hope to here from you, If that is possible. My e-mail address is nannabel@live.com."

"I've never met Jeff, but I go to college with his sister, Emily.

I remember reading your story in the newspaper, and thinking about all the people who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. I thank God everyday that there are men and women who are willing to fight for freedom, even if not for themselves--and even if they have to give up their very lives. I thank God that He has given the Starr's such a wonderful support system. I cannot imagine what they must go through daily.

I pray for you often, asking the Lord to comfort your hearts when times get tough. That He would remind you constantly that Jeffrey is home, with him, and that one day, you'll see him again. Stay strong.

Thank you. Thanks for everything, Jeff. You are a hero for this country, for your family, and now, for me."
Danyelle of Parkland, WA/USA

"I am so sorry that Jeffrey died while serving his country. I was just reading in the paper of the mixed feelings of many National Guardmen (and women) who have returned from the Middle East. I cannot know your pain--when people we love die violently and young, how sad we must be at the loss of their presence in our lives! I pray that good comes through your loss and that the memory of Jeffrey B.Starr will remain in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved him. You have my heartfelt sympathy."

I was sitting here thinking of Jeff today because it was 3 years ago,on April 13th, that he was one of the men who saved my husband from death. There isn't a day that goes by that he is not in my heart. We think of you and will never forget you.You will always be my hero.
Thank you so much for being there.

"There are so many messages from people who knew your son. I almost feel like I am intruding. I ran across this website by accident but after reading about your son, I to wish to express my sincere thanks to Jeff Starr for his service to his country. So many say that we need to pull our service men and women out of this war. I do not think that those persons have stopped to listen to how our service people feel. A good friend of our family had a son in Iraq also. He told his parents that if he does not finish the job now that he is afraid one day his son will be fighting this same war. At the time this young man was 22 years old and not married. Like Jeff said he is fighting so others can have the same freedom we enjoy. God Bless you for raising a wonderful man who loved his country. May God be with you always."
Annette Long of Mansfield, TX USA

"To the family of Cpl Jeffrey Starr:
Tonight I re-visited this "Fallen Heroes Memorial" to read the messages left on the site for Capt. James Edge. Jamie is my dear son and Hero, as is your son Jeff. I read your message about how our son's are now together in heaven and how your Jeff was there in Ramadi on the day that Jamie was killed by the sniper. I wanted to let you know that I feel a kinship to you and your family, because we share in that deep loss of our children.I am proud of our sons and look forward to being with them one day. God bless you and our country and all our military men and women who risk their lives to keep us safe here at home by fighting terror over there."
Janice (Edge) Whorton of Norfolk, VA

"To Jeff's parents:

I knew Jeff in high school, not well, but knew him well enough that he was a charming and friendly guy that always had a smile on his face. We traded quick words between each other in the halls in between classes, and though we weren't friends outside of school, I always regarded him as a friend. I never knew a more friendlier person or a brighter personality. I knew little of him, but I never forgot him. He was the type of person that touched your life even if you didn't know him, even before his career in the Marines. When I heard he was killed, I was devastated. It felt (and still feels) like a personal loss. I kept the Herald article of his letter to his fiance so that I may show my children someday what a real hero is. My fiance (who is serving in the US Coast Guard) and I pray every day for your family. I am comforted to know that Jeff is finding rest and eternal happiness beside the Lord Jesus in Heaven. God bless him and the family he left behind. Thank you for your sacrifice."
Ashley of Everett WA

"Jeff,
On Omaha beach there is an epitaph that says: "When you go home, tell them of us and say that for your tomorrow we gave our today." We have our tomorrows thanks to you and others like you. Me and Kyle still sit around and bullshit about all the stupid things we did together. You'll be missed my friend, but dont worry, We'll meet at the NCO lounge in Heaven thats reserved for warriors like you. Hopefully, When i get there, I will have the honor to stand next to you. Godspeed, my friend."
Heath Mitchell of Marysville, WA

Gone to heaven, but not forgotten on Earth."

"How proud you all must be of the great sacrifice that Jeff made for his country and his comrades. I can tell from the look on his face, at his wedding, that he was obviously very proud of what he was doing on behalf of his country and feedom.
God bless Jeff and you all in your hour of sorrow."
Robert B. Miller of Warren, NJ

""Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Jeffrey Starr died not just for his friends, but for the principle of freedom, which endures because of heroes like him. I am struck not just by his courage, but by his commitment as well as the clarity of his thought and ideals. I never met him, but I have had the privilege of working with, and being friends with, Jeffrey's uncle, Tim Lickness. Tim was another of those rare individuals who put his life on the line for us when he was a young man. Tim's pride in Jeffrey was always evident as he told us of Jeffrey's course, and so it goes that the pain to him is equally evident, as it must be for the rest of the family. God's peace to the Starr family. Your son's sacrifice is an inspiration to all."
Doug Jenkins of Cincinnati, Ohio

"To the family of your fallen hero, Jeff Starr. We hear so much negative information from the press and from the television concerning the way the war is going. Fortunately, here in the Bay Area, we have some good radio stations who give us live reports from Iraq concerning how proud our soldiers are of the job that they are doing to better the lives of these oppressed people, and how much the Iraqi citizens appreciate what they are doing. This is the kind of lasting contribution that will make our efforts successful and which exemplify the American military tradition. I know that Jeff felt this way and had a great sense of obligation and duty to his country - especially his statements on his computer that he was fighting to preserve what America represented.

As we approach Memorial Day, I say thank you for raising such a wonderful son. The generation of young men in Iraq is just as entitled to be called "the greatest generation" as earlier soldiers have been called. In the face of constant criticism of this country, at home and abroad, it gives me great faith that the young people who are brave enough to fight for us have the wholesome and patriotic attitudes exemplified by Jeff.
As a poet once said of the World War I generation, "they gave away all their tomorrows that we might have our todays."
God Bless."
Michael J. Brady of Redwood City

"Please know that your son's life is remembered and celebrated during this significant time of the year. God's richest blessings on your family."

"I did not know Jeff, but I was following his career thru my co-worker and friend, Tim Lickness. Tim shared Jeff's experience with me because I am an Iowa National Guardsmen. Since I was activated and deployed forward, Jeff's sacrifice has been a source of stregnth for me. As a Soldier in Iraq, I know that Jeff's sacrifice was for a just and honorable cause. I only hope that my service honors his memory and sacrifice."
CPT Rob Ford of Camp Adder, Iraq

"God be with you till you meet again. All prayers with you and your family. It was good seeing Tim again and being able to keep in touch. So sorry to hear about your loss but know where he is and how happy he is."
Cindy (Jared) of Ivins, Ut.

"There is absolutely no way to express our sympathy to your family in a way that seems appropriate. But please know that your loss does matter to us. We hurt for you and are humbled by the fact that Jeffrey gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we can have the freedom that so many people do not. May God bless you and hold you close. Our prayers are that God will give to you the peace that passes all understanding and that you feel His love. We will forever be grateful for all that Jeffrey gave for us!"

"Jeff, you were my team leader, and mentor for a year before the day you got hit. I know how much going home meant to you, and the fact that you got hit a few weeks before you got to see your family just doesn't seem fair.
I talked to your family at the Battalion memorial and it was hard. You had a great family and I'm sorry you didn't get the chance to see them again. You taught me a lot and I will carry it on. Semper Fidelis."
LCPL Rivera of Camp Pendleton, CA

I taught Jeff in 8th grade and there was not a brighter, more humorous individual in my classes. He was a treasure to us all. He gave that we might live freely today and Iraq could have a democracy. His sacrifice cannot be measured nor felt except there will always be a respect for him and apogee of what might have been more."

"To the family of Cpl. Jeffrey B. Starr: Thankyou for the sacrifice that you and your family have given. I can not imagine the grief you must feel at your loss or the joy that you have knowing that you will see your son in heaven. As an American who was raised and lives in Canada, I have a profound respect for the men and women who have chosen to go to Iraq to fight for the freedoms that we take for granted. I know that one day the Lord will return; but until then, tyranny and injustice must be fought. Thankyou to all the men and women of the United States Armed Forces."
James Hartmier of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

"To the family of Jeffrey Starr. We didn't know how to contact you until we heard of this website. Our son, Brendan fought and trained with your son in Iraq. It was quite a shock to Brendan hearing of Jeff's death. Our family will honor the memory of your son & brother. You will be in our prayers in the days to come."
Pat Wolfe of Ontario, Canada

"To the family of US Marine Corporal Jeffrey B Starr: This patriotic American family is extremely grateful to you for having given the US such a noble person. The Howard Family of Rio Rico, Arizona, USA

"Without knowing it at the time, we were in the bleachers at Jeffrey's HS graduation. Our sons were in the same class. They both enlisted in the Marines after graduation and both went to Iraq (my son is Cpl. Alex Hayden). You have paid the ulitmate sacrifice and have lived my worst fears. My heart and prayers will always be with you. Our family will honor the memory of your fine son and brother. God be with you."
Julie LaBelle of Snohomish Washington

"Words escape me, I want to write and tell the family of Cpl Starr how sorry I am for your loss. I do not dare to thank my words can comfort you. I do not believe such words exist, at least not by men. I do pray that God can quench your hearts, and I promise you that I will honor your son as best I can. My son is four, he loves heroes, Superman, Batman and the like. One day when he is old enough I will tell him of real heroes. Men like Corporal Jeffrey B. Starr, men he and I never knew, men who kept us free. God Bless You!"
Roy Sekulich of Manchester,TN USA

"I would like to extend my heartfelt
sympathy to this young man's family. I didn't know Jeffrey on an personal basis but i don't think it really matters. They lost a fine young man and we as Americans and human beings lost an opportunity to see this young person realize his potential. His death can be seen from two different perspectives: sorrow, in that his family and friends lost a fine person and second, pride, in that he gave everything in the service of not just the Iraqui people but humanity. The feeling I have for all the people willingly serving in Iraq and Afganhistan is stronger than pride. It's more like love, respect and heartfelt admiration. May the good Lord watch over each of them and their loved ones."
Frank Scott of O;fallon Illinois, USA

"Jeff, will always remember you...Sgt Wolfe. God bless"
Brendan Wolfe (aka) Sgt Wolfe 0351 of Sarnia. ONT CANADA

This Christmas will be one of the hardest. Please know that we all are thinking of you, and Praying for you. Jeff's Memory will forever be in our hearts, and we will forever be grateful for his sacrifice. Trust in God, he will continue to Help you all through this difficult time, God Bless"

"I am profoundly moved by Jeffrey’s message and sacrifice. It caused me to think of the Korean campaign and remember comrades who died. It must have been the juxtaposition of thinking of Jeffery and of my fallen comrades, at the same time, that caused me to understand, they and Jeffery are forever young. When Jeffrey joins them he will find them still young and he and they will remain so forever. Please accept our heartfelt thanks for your sacrifice and may God bless and comfort you."
Bill Cowie of SLC, Utah

"Having heard of Jeff's sacrifice through the President's speach, our family took the time to discuss the incredible bravery, strength, commitment and love of our country that Jeff and his many fallen comrades must have. Our family will be forever grateful for Jeff's "mark" on our hearts, for our country and, for that matter, the world. We also wanted you, Jeff's family, to know that while he gave his life - you gave your son for each and every one of us. My children will continue to live in peace and freedom because there are people like Jeff and because there are families and parents like the Starr's that instill and inspire such greatness in their children. Just as Jeff's sacrifice must never be forgotten, we must never forget the supreme sacrifice the Starr's have made - and what an incredibly fine young man they raised. Most of us were never fortunate enough to know or meet Jeff or the Starr family, but we all are blessed to have such countrymen in the United States. May God return to the Starr family the abundance of blessings they have bestowed upon all of us. We should be proud to call ourselves Americans when we are represented by such a fine family."
Ron Hunter & Family of Bakersfield, CA

"This sacrifice, suffered by both Cpl. Starr and his family, is the truest sign that there is another world, the Kingdom of God, where truth and honor and love will be the reward. This world can't offer the hope and peace that come from such a noble and selfless life. I pray that God gives you comfort in this time of loss. Two of my children are Marines and they believe as strongly as your son that we are the only hope for freedom. Thank you."
Mary Cassleman of Spring Lake, MI

"Thank you for your service."
Kevin of RI

"To Jeffrey's family from my family:

Our hearts go out to you and also our deepest gratitude for his service to us all.
May God give you peace of mind knowing Jeffrey gave his life to defend us and bring freedom to an oppressed people.

We live in peace here in this country, sleeping soundly in comfortable beds because brave men and women defend our freedom in far away lands.

God bless you and know that He loves Jeffrey for his sacrifice. Our Heavenly Father must have a perfect understanding and love for your family. After all, He sent a Son to sacrifice for us too."
Bruce Gummere of Littleton Colorado

"I write this with a heavy heart and shivers. I think about all the poeple that put their lives on the line for people they don't know. God bless you, the soldiers, for all you have done and sacrificed. God bless you, the soldiers, for all you will do and sacrafice. God bless you, the families, that live with this every moment of your waking life and dream about this in your sleep. Your sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews have not died in vain. They died as they lived, a hero. They are forever emblazoned in our hearts and in our minds. To say thank you, would be a terrible understatement of the appretiation that we, the american people feel. But, because I am not a poet, I can only say "Thank you." Thank you Jeffrey Starr. Thank GOD for all the people in our armed service and to their families. We pray for you and wish you GOD speed."
Simon, Melanie, and Madison of Palisades Park, NJ

"First – I am a former US Marine who served in theater during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. God was kind enough to keep me out of harm’s way and send me home – to my fiancée (now wife). I know some small thing of what Cpl Starr speaks.

To Cpl Starr – Semper Fi Marine. Thank you for your service to my children, their children and countless generations of Americans, Iraqis’ and others.

To his parents and family - Thank you for raising a young man that understood virtue, justice, honor, and sacrifice. I grieve for you that he is lost to you in this life.

To Mr. Lickness – Thank you for “the rest of the story.” As I read the portion of the letter that the times choose to omit, I was saddened that Cpl Starr’s powerful statement was not made immediately public and thrilled that you had ensured that it was.

To the NY Times and those of their ilk – Thank you for your boldness in bias – you have created clarity for us regarding the depths to which you will sink to advance your filthy agenda. Thank you for so clearly juxtaposing your self-serving misrepresentation of his belief, against the truth of his character. It is important to me for you to know this: as I read the portion of Cpl. Starr’s letter that you were unwilling to report I was reminded of the historic words of Nathan Hale – “I regret that I have but one life to give for my country.” I hope that Cpl Starr’s words – “everybody dies but few get to do it for something as important as freedom” will have a similar echo through history. He will be remembered as a patriot, and as a man of conviction. Thank you. He understood what you do not – that a life spent in service is not wasted – that a life lost in the defense of your nation, and in defense of justice is not ill spent. “[E]verybody dies but few get to do it for something as important as freedom” shines brilliantly against the black of your misuse. Thank you again for providing such clarity."
Nathan Miller of Phoenix AZ

"To the family of Cpl. Starr, your son by his death showed the world what "Semper Fi" really means. God Bless you and yours."
Terry Copeland of Cresaptown, MD

"He, who loves mercy, walks justly, and sacrifices to help others is blessed by God. Jeffrey B. Starr is abundantly blessed.

I am overwhelmed by just reading his story and I can’t imagine what it is like to know a young man of such simple greatness. My hope and prayer is that my 8 year old son David will develop character like Jeffrey’s.

God bless the Starr family."
Rory McCarthy of Santa Barbara, California/USA

"Thank you so much for allowing President Bush to share Jeffrey's last letter with us. I have an 18 year old granddaughter that thinks the Iraq War is wrong. I'm looking forward to sharing Jeffrey's letter with her. God Bless you and give you peace and inspiration over the loss of your wonderful son."
Vivian Henderson of Port Orchard, WA

"To the friends and family of CPL Starr, I took the liberty of quoting a poem "Never Alone"
written by a Rodney Belcher:

I feel you in the morning
When at first I awake
Your thought is with me
With each decision I make

Cause by what you bestowed
In our short time together
Will last in my heart
Forever and ever

Although you've left
And now walk above
I'm never alone
I'm wrapped in your love

Enjoy now your long waited reward
Feel peace that your love continues on
What was taught to me, will be taught to mine
Cause you live on in me even after you've gone

God Bless the loved ones of this true American as well as all the other heroes that gave the ulimate sacrifice. Stand proud that the principles and values of our founding fathers and those that have given the ultimate sacrifice to preserve freedom for all continue because of men (and woman) like CPL Starr and not those of the mainstream media that try in vain to distort those values and principles."

"Nathan Hale, a twenty-one-year old public school teacher who, almost 230 years ago said, "My only regret is that I have but one life to give for my country." Capt. Nathan Hale (age 21)and Cpl. Jeffrey Starr (age 22) - where does America get such men?"
Tom Liddy of Chandler, Arizona

"One of those fallen heroes is a Marine corporal named Jeff Starr (ph) who was killed fighting the terrorists in Ramadi earlier this year. After he died, a letter was found on his laptop computer. Here's what he wrote.

He said, "If you're reading this, then I've died in Iraq. I don't regret going. Everybody dies but a few get to do it for something as important as freedom.

"It may seem confusing why we're in Iraq; it's not to me. I'm here helping these people so they can live the way we live, not to have to worry about tyrants or vicious dictators. Others have died for my freedom; now this is my mark."

There's only one way to honor the sacrifice of Corporal Starr (ph) and his fallen comrades. And that is to take up their mantle, carry on the fight and complete their mission.

This was what the President said in his speech! You are a true hero!"
Tony B of Germany

"I heard the President mention your name in his speech and about the message you left on your pc before you died. I wept uncontrollably. I never knew you, but as a former airman, you are my brother and I will see you in Heaven. You inspired me and you will inspire others even in death. You will not be forgotten and neither will your sacrifice. You are a hero not only to me, but to a grateful nation and to a growing nation Iraq. God bless you!"

"God bless you and your family. My eldest son has been in combat repeatedly since December 2001. We have had conversations about the possibility of his death and how he wants us to handle it if it is his time. He said basically the same thing to me as Jeffrey did. He believes that he is engaged in a noble cause and that we must understand he wants to defend freedom even if it means his life.

I pray that the arms of God will reach down to you and grant you comfort through the years."

"To the family of Jeffrey Starr,
Thank you so much, I appreciate his sacrifice, and I hope that everyone in America, and eventually the entire world realizes the sacrifice and hard work that every service member in Iraq has given; not just to Iraq, but to the entire world. War is always a horrible task, and should be undertaken only under grave necessity, unfortunately the burden falls most heavily on the brave, who are willing to put their lives at risk to resolve the conflict. Jeffrey was one of the brave, and he should be remembered as such."

"Cpl. Jeffrey starr represented all that is "great" in our country. The pride and devotion to something so slight as a flag and its meaning will never be forgotten by men such as Cpl. Starr and our founding fathers would appreciate all that he and so many others have given to ensure that everyone understands that "Freedom is not Free!" My deepest sympathy for a fallen hero. Many of us have been there but so few have paid the ultimate sacrifice on the "Altar of Battle". GODS SPEED and GOD BLESS OUR SOLDIERS! Hold your head high at all times and remember what Cpl. Starr stood for. Some often forget!"

Dirk Flint, GySgt, USMC (Ret) of Claremore, OK

"I very seldom do things like this. However, after reading about the story of Jeffrey Starr, I had to voice my thought. I was a soldier of 9 years in the US Army. I was never assigned to any conflicts nor did I serve any time during conflicts. I can not begin to think of what everyone is going through over in Iraq. I know it is tough for the soldiers and their families.

The letter written to your girlfriend will stick with her for the rest of her life. By her obtaining the letter, first it was very touching knowing that someone died for her and her freedom. Second, she will take it to her grave knowing that you will be there waiting for her.

Things happen in this world for reasons. Reasons that not even I know. I am sure while Jeffery was typing the letter to his girlfriend he was crying on the inside if not actually crying tears with every keystroke. The hardest thing for someone to do is to think about and plan their own death. Anyone can write a novel but it takes a lot more to write and think about what all you want to say to someone once you are gone.

Once this conflict is over and all of our soldiers come home, I would hate to see the same thing that happened during the Viet Nam war. As with the Viet Nam war, our soldiers are doing their job. They are doing as they are instructed to do. People might not agree with this war and people may protest it but the fact is, there is no protest nor is there one person that can stop it. It has begun and it will continue until it is declared over.

Jeffery will never be able know what he did to help out a country that needed him. He will never know what everyone on this site has written about and for him.

It is sad that a publication company decided to remove some of what Jeffery wrote to his girlfriend. If you are going to publish something, publish it in full unless the person submitting the information has requested you not to publish it.

For all the people protesting the war, you have that right. However you should stop and think about what you are really doing. You are not helping out with your protests you are only making things more difficult.

I would like to thank Jeffery Starr and his family for the duty that he was performing in Iraq. You will never know how much he helped our country as well as the country of Iraq. Thoughts and prayers for the family.

THANK YOU !!"

My husband is also a Vietnam Vet and I think he silently cries for those he and his fellow Marines lost in 1971 in Vietnam. The worst thing was this: others tried to take their honor away. The protesting scumbags did not succeed in taking it.This summer at the Vietnam Vets reunion at Branson he and his fellow Marines (all 50+ were in Vietnam) made a promise that the new Marines would not have their names and reputations smeared like theirs were."

To you that have given your lives and to those that have lost someone, my sincerest and most heartfelt emotions of thanks, sorrow and pride. Our country, although not perfect, is still the brightest star on the planet thanks to the league of military men and women like this fine young American Marine. Their sacrifices will not be forgotten, not only by us, but by 25 million Iraqis enjoying their first taste of freedom. In our grieving and memories we need to remind ourselves that freedom has a price, sometimes extremely painful, most of the time overwhelmingly so. I thank God everyday for the country I live in, the people who have given the ultimate to ensure it remains and the parents who taught them what a true American is. Thank you."

"When we heard the letter read that he had left behind my wife and I wept. It reminded me of some of the letters that men wrote during the civil war to their loved ones and what passion they put in these letters. They were so willing to give their lives for a just cause. Obviously Jeffery was just as willing to give his life for such a cause also. Not only did Jeffrey's family loose a wonderful family member but this country lost a hero."
Lyndon Terrell of Villa Rica, Ga/USA

"I am from South America, and I understand what is about to deal with tyrants.
I really appreciate what soldiers of United States are doing to keep the world clean from tyrannies ¨(free the Iraqi people from tyranny)¨.
I feel sorry for the US military death[s]. Thanks Cpl Jeffrey B. Starr, USMC.and all his family.
I wish one day to see tyrants such Fidel Castro will be the next ones.
I wish to see from Americans more respect to their soldiers and families. More positive stories from the Media.
They must tell Jeffrey's story and promoting Jeffrey´s thoughts and what he believed in. He [was] willing put
his life on the line for this cause. And as I understand he just before he left for his third tour of duty in Iraq what was his thought about going back the third time: "If we (Americans) don't do this (free the Iraqi people from tyranny) who will? No one else can."
And the most of importance his expression of how he felt about putting his life at risk for this cause. He said it with grace and maturity.
And he was very clear in that.
He did not regret doing that. I consider from him and his family heroes, and a terrible loss, but I appreciate his duties and in the name of the people that we learned and know in what is about a real tyranny,WE REALLY ADMIRE and appreciate his sacrifice. We have to be very aware of this:those tyrants have their people in the United States Congress and in the Media working for them.
Those criminals are inside this beautiful country, and they are underminning the structures of this wonderful land too.
Helping the iraquies, he was helping America too, and the world without those all kind of about tyrants or vicious dictators makes a world more safe.

What Jeffrey said is important. Americans need to understand that most of those who are or have been there understand what's going on. It would honor Jeffrey's memory if you would publish the rest of his story.
And also to understand that Iraq is not the only problem, in USA in the backyard of each American, communists agents and the followers of those tyrants are working to create chaos and unhappinness. I invite to be aware of Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez Frias from Venezuela.

I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Lickness, I think as he is a great person, I am sure his nephew he is a great man too. A family of a great genes and patriots. As he said: "Even more than a Marine, Jeff was a man of God. At a recent memorial service at Camp Pendleton for the 16 Marines from his unit killed in Iraq we got to meet the men who were with him when he died. They told us of his bravery under fire, his leadership, his humor and his humanity. America lost the best it has, but the family knows he's with his Heavenly Father and we will see him again."
I can end with this:
God Bless America, God Bless Jeffrey B. Starr and God Bless his family.
With my deep appreciation"
Gisela Mayworm of San Diego, Ca.

"Reading your son's letter, I could only place it alongside the words we all learn in school uttered by Patrick Henry or Nathan Hale. Men such as Corporal Starr are the beacon that makes America right and just, his words are what differentiates us from our enemies. I am humbled, and feel hardly adequate to call myself an American when a young man such as your son sets the standard.

His place in our history is secure, and your loss is immeasurable."
Mike Offit of New York, NY

"I wept as I read the parts of the letter that Jeffery wrote. It is because of heroes like him that we have the freedoms that we have. "Today I heard our congress discussing this brave American. My son will soon be 18. I fear this war will be a long struggle and there is a chance he will called upon to stand where Jeffrey has stood. It is a scarey thought for me but it is also a comfort to know that, if my son should serve, he will stand alongside the memory of such great men. God Bless his family and his memory."

I met several members of Cpl Starr's unit at the First Marine Division's reunion and observed America's finest young men. At that time, I remembered the WW2 quote,"Where do we get such fine men?" I look at the "get high and get by" generation walking America's streets and ponder this myself. Where do we get such fine men?

The Fifth Marines are the most decorated unit in the Marine Corps, with awards and decorations from WW1, WW2, Korea, Viet Nam and now Iraq, with a lot of smaller actions in between. Cpl. Starr joins an illustrious unit in Heaven joining other heros from Belleau Woods in France, Guadalcanal and many more in the Pacific, The Chosin Reservoir in Korea and the jungles and Hue City in Viet Nam.

He is in good company and he has earned the honor of joining that "Elite of the Elite" unit.

And yet I still wonder, "Where do we get such fine men? for if we cannot call on them we will surely be torn apart by the vicious world out there.

Thank you and Jeffrey for your sacrifice, we who walked in his boots but not nearly as far salute you.

"Mr & Mrs Starr,

We, as a family, are overwhelmed with pride, in knowing that we have such a man as your son whom we can proudly call a true American.

As New Yorkers, know that we are also overwhelmed with shame that a newspaper as anti-American as the NY Times shares a name with our state.

Do not allow their cretinous fascism to cause you grief, for in their stupidity, they have caused your sons' message to be broadcast throughout the world in all other major news portals."
Gabriel & Maria Espinosa of MONTICELLO, NY (USA)

"What a heartfelt young man - and a proud young warrior to carry on a tradition as old as the Corps. You see, my husband, Samuel Wayne Bell, felt the same about the war in Vietnam even after three tours. He was killed on May 10, 1969. Those of us who know the meaning of sacrifice and freedom pay the price but are not alone. He, and others like him, will not be forgotten."

I can't begin to imagine your pain and grief. The loss of a child must be devastating. Please know that in the coming months and even years ahead as people go on with their lives and seem to have forgotten your son and the sacrifice he made. He will not be forgotten! He will always be remembered in a silent prayer, a memory of the statement he made that others have died for him and now it is time to leave his mark. May God comfort you as only he can and know that one day you will be reunited again. Thank you and God bless."

"How proud this young man's family must be of him despite the grief in having lost someone so dear. It takes a man to come up to the plate and risk his life for the freedom of his country and those of citizens living under a cruel government. As a mother, I know it must have been difficult to have this fallen soldier return to Iraq a third time. My heart goes out to you. Your son is a hero in my eyes. We need more men like him to help defend this country because heaven only knows what would happen if everyone decided they were not putting their life on the line to protect anyone here or there. This soldier's love and dedication for the United States has to have been inspired by those who raised him and shared his life. How can we ever thank Mr. Starr enough? He gave his life to keep us free, and to extend freedom to those who were powerless. "My deepest sympathies to all of Jeffrey's family and friends. Be glad that you knew him, and ever thank God that there are still young people in this country who will stand up for the true values that sustain our blessed way of life, regardless of the cost.

I was a combat medic in Vietnam and I have been in touch with surviving family members of young men I knew who lost their lives in that far off land so long ago. But only in very recent years, after a generation of lonely silence in between times. I know that their lives, and mine, were changed forever by what happened to their loved ones, and that not a day goes by still that they do not think about their love and their loss. But in that sad day long ago, there was very little support for those brave soldiers, living and dead, outside of their immediate family and friends. May this new world of support and prayer and love surround your grief with the comfort of knowing that millions of Americans, and many people around the world, respect and admire, support and believe in, and pray for, your young Marine, and all his comrades who will take inspiration from his sacrifice now, and for as long as the United Stands endures."

"John 15
[13] Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

I believe this with all my heart and know for certain that Jeffrey has done the greatest thing any human can ever hope to do, and had the courage and strength to do it.Know for a fact that Jeffrery lives and waits in paradise for the rest of us.I pray that I, in my life, when my time comes that I may have the same courage your son had to do the right thing.

May the Peace that only comes from knowing Jesus Christ descend on you and your family like a dove.In Jesus name.Amen"

"The Lord said, "Thou shalt live together in love, insomuch that thou shalt weep for the loss of them that die,And it shall come to pass that those that die in me shall not taste of death, for it shall be sweet unto them."
Your son, a man of God, has honored us all by his selfless sacrifice. It is not a platitude to say that he will be remembered throughout all time and eternity for his great deed, because it was recorded in the annals of heaven.
I pray for my son in Ramadi. I pray for our troops in harm's way. I pray for you, that God may send you His Comforter, to give you that peace that passeth all understanding. Your son sacrificed his life for liberty and America. You sacrificed your son, a noble and honorable sacrifice. May God bless you for it."
