"Jon, we shared a deployment together when I came to A CO from HHC, and definitely hit up them spades on more than one occasion. You and I were just bout' the same in that as soon as we hit a lil downtime(not too much in the Desert) we popped out a deck of cards.... Tejada hit me up in November and gave me the solemn news, and we were both floored, and still are to this day.. You were and will always be one of the great guys that helped to shed some sunshine with smiles over and on a dreary day. It was a True Honor to have Served with such a Great Man! CHARLIE MIKE!"

"The wife, mother, kids, and other family members of Sgt. Shields:

I would just like to say that though I never knew Sgt. Shields personally, but I was there in Iraq at the same time as him and it helps to remind me every time I think of him and all of the fallen soldiers,Sailors,Marines,Airmen, and Coast Guard that have given the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation how truly blessed we all are by God. Please know that you all are heroes too for the sacrifices you have made for this country as well, and that will never be forgotten by me and my family. Please know that I have not forgotten him or any one else and every time I look back on that year I remember him. I'm sorry it has taken so long to write this message but please know that I have never forgotten, and I will always remember and be grateful to God more often for the blessing of life and liberty because of heroes like Sgt.Shields

"Sgt. Jonathan Bernard Shields,
It is with great pain and a heavy heart that I learn of the ultimate sacrifice that you made. A soldier fighting for our freedom, and subsequently giving your life for this great country. I knew you more than well, spending years as your neighbor, and you will be truly missed, but never forgotten.
To your mother, Ms. Evelyn, I am so sorry for your loss. I knew of the great commitment that Jonathan had to his brother Jasshua, his two little sisters and more than anything, to you. As a single mother at the time, I have to say, you raised a very honorable man. My deepest condolences to your entire family. Jon-Jon will be truly missed."

"I served with Shields in the same company for about 3 years. He was a great person to know, and even better man to have on your side. Sheilds could always get a smile out of me no matter how mad or depressed I was. He just had that thing about him that no matter how bad things seemed everything was acctually alright. I always knew if I need anything that I wasn't able to get Sheilds would know someone that would take care of us, thats the type of person he was, he knew everyone and everyone liked him. It was a privilage to have known him, and an honor to have served in combat with him. He will always be missed and never forgoten. See ya on the other side.
