"I didn't know Daniel, but I heard his story today. I work for the Illuminating Company and after arriving to a job I hung my American flag on the back of the truck. Our flag was all it took for a stranger to come talk to me. I didn't catch his name but the man is from Columbia Station and told me great things about his son-in-law, Daniel Shepherd. He even told me how excited Daniel was when his son was born on St. Patrick's day, since he was Irish. I guess I'm telling you this so you know that Daniel hasn't and will never be forgotten. Thoughts and prayers to his family."

"Sgt. Shep I will always remember the good times. But I will never forget that day I hope to honor your death by being a good man and father. You are always missed and I spoke with Kersting the other day, I think it is time I sit down and talk with your mother and father. I will be planning a trip to Ohio soon I want to tell them how great of an honor it was to serve with you. Also that Iraq wasn't a "Vacation", lol. I miss you everyday and can't wait to bum you a cigarette again some day."

I think of you more then anyone will ever know. Having done multiple deployments since ours in 2004. I reflect on the day I lost a fine NCO. I have had a young Pfc that had a child born and he could not go home. Just so you know he never left the wire until he got on a plane home. I will be coming to pay my respects soon as I PCS your way in a month. Peace be with you and your family."

I wish I could take the families pain away but I can't. I am committed to loving ALL people, myself and our environment. I am committed to working on my happiness everyday because so many have died for my freedom to live my life. Thank you is not enough but it is all I have. "To Kassie and young Daniel, Dan proved to be one of my greatest friends. When i first heard of his death I was too striken with grief to write to you. However, it must be established, young Dan, that your father was a great man. We shared alot of time together. We were in basic training together in Ft. Benning Georgia and then both sent to Ft. Riley Kansas on graduation. There were several times in basic training that he shared his love for your mom with me during this time. After graduation he drove to my house to pick me up and we drove to KS together. We spent many fun times together and he was a very special person. I left before we went to Iraq but I will never forget Daniel Shepherd"
Paul Zurn of Champaign, IL

"Thank you all for your messages to us and Danny. It's now been over a year and we still miss Danny so much. Our son is growing like a weed, and looks a lot like his Daddy. I don't know how I've gone this long w/o Danny. We used to joke and say we couldn't breathe if we didn't talk to each other once a day. Well, it was hard to breathe for a long time Danny, but I'm ok now. I still have my days, but things are better. I talk to the baby about Danny everyday and we visit him often. We've learned to get on w/ things in a different way, but will never stop loving or missing Danny. To everyone, thank you again. Danny, I still love ya lots and miss ya much babe."
Kassie Shepherd of Olmsted Falls, OH

"Danny Boy...I am so proud of you and everything you accomplished...I only wish I had the chance to tell you that face-to-face, but I know you hear my prayers and you know how I feel. "I remember the night that I found out what had happened to Danny. I had just returned home from work and my mother met me at the door. She looked at me with tear filled eyes and pointed at the flag nextdoor. She didn't even have to say anything I already knew. So much pain rushed through me all at once because I knew that I would never get to see "the boy nextdoor" again. The pain did not last to long though because I soon relized that though Danny's physical presence will no longer be there, his love and memories will never falter. Danny was always a very helpful person and though I was few years younger than him he never hesitated to talk to me if I got up enough courage to talk to him. I thank you for everything that you have done not only for the people that you knew and loved, but also for the people you never met. You truely are a hero and will never be forgotten. To the family though I see you everyday I want to say again God Bless, my love and prayers will always be with you."
Jennifer of Elyria

"Shepherd was one the best people I ever had the chance to meet and serve with in the Army. I didn't see him when we were in Iraq because we were both stationed in different places over there. I knew him from an earlier deployment, he was a great guy. No matter how much he didn't like his job, he always did it to the best of his ability. He would always stop to help somebody else out when they needed it. All I can really say is he was a great person. To his wife, child, and parents I wish you all the best, and God bless you."
SGT Andrew Ritchie of New York ,NY
