"Jay,

Life for Jason was always to be lived in the moment. This held true from the day he was born until his last breath. As an infant who came into this world the size of the average three month old, Jay showed us that he was anything BUT average. I'll never forget walking down to the infant nursery window to see my newborn. My eyes immediately fixed on this one baby ... propped up on his elbows... neck stretched ... head up and looking around. It was MY baby showing off. He owned that nursery! I just stood there with a grin from ear to ear as he entertained all of us onlookers with his super human baby performance. The days and years that followed pretty much played out the same. Jay continued to entertain, amaze and challenge us all with his bruit strength, imagination and zest for life.

While PFC Jason Scheuerman may be remembered to some as the young soldier who gave in to depression and took his own life. I remember Jason, as the young man who fought to LIVE. He was and always will be my hero.

Jason was born on Memorial Day.

"To SFC Edward Scheuerman,

I know it has been a while. I remember how much you loved your son, you always talked about him when we were in Iraq. I know he is as proud of you as you are of him. Remember, he is watching over you now. Even though you can not see him, he is there to listen to you and hear your prayers.

Blessed be."
Michelle Durante of Valrico, FL

"I could not leave this website without leaving a message, for 2 reasons: I am very sad to hear of your loss, you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I will be so glad when this is all over.
Second reason, we have the same last name, which is very weird to me. It is a Very rare name around the area I am from."
Sha of Esbon, KS USA

"This is so sad. Unfortuneatly, the neglect of mental health care in the Army, begins at boot camp. My son begged to talk to someone, and they make it impossible for a soldier to seek help.
Because of this neglect, it leads to suicide in boot camp, and while they are serving our country.
May God Bless you, your family, and our brave soldiers."
Chrissy of Missouri

"Sometimes the real heroes are the ones whose stories inspire the rest of us to fight for needed change in a flawed system. To the family of Jason Scheuerman - I think this young man, your son, was definitely an honorable hero. There are no words to express our deep sympathies for the grieving you are dealing with."
September of Lake Michigan

"Jason Scheuerman, like many of the Scheuerman family, believed in serving their country. I am heartbroken that the country he served did not serve and protect him. 1/7/08"

"I read a news story about Jason earlier and I want you to know how sad I am; and how I am grieving with you. I feel outraged that Jason was treated the way he was by those who were supposed to look out for him. My heart hurts for Jason and for you. I am so sorry that Jason went through all that he did and I know how badly you hurt and grieve."
Sandy Bonesteel of El Paso, Tx. USA

"I was in JROTC with Jason in highschool at WHHS. We use to have fun together in that class picking on each other and making fun of one another during drills. He was two years older than me, graduated and joined the United States Army. I learned of his death in '05 while i was enlisting into the United States Air Force. I'm in Iraq now as a combat convoyer. Seeing all the things he had seen, realizing now just how much he had gone through and understanding what it must've felt like for him going through all this stress. And after all that, you come home to a different world feeling like you don't belong anymore. I'm starting to understand and I'll fight this one for him."

"I just learned about Jason's death this evening. I knew Jason when he was but a little boy...his father and my husband were in the military together. I am so terribly sorry."

"...I know that nothing I say can make it easier for anyone to swallow this loss. All I can offer is my deepest comisseration. Although I may not have dated Jason, I became pretty attached to what I knew of him. I regret that I didn't tell him how much he mattered to me, and I only hope he knows now, wherever he is. He'll always be in my thoughts and in my heart. An online memorial can never do justice to the hurt left inside me knowing that I'll never get to hug him again, hear his voice on the phone, or see his big goofy smile... I'll always remember him kindly...and I'll always miss him - no matter how much time passes. He won't be forgotten."
