"Hey Uncle Ivory,
I miss you and think about you all the time. I am so happy that it was you that taught me how to read and write. It was you who bought my first party dress. It was you that convinced Grand Ma to let me wear up-to-date clothes like the other kids. It was you who paid for them. It was you that covered for me when I was in trouble with Grand Ma. It was you that paid for my school books and fees in my first year of college. It was you that gave me away at my wedding. As it should've been. I have so many cherished memories of you. You are my one man army. You are my heroe. Your spirit lives inside of me. In honor of your loving memory.
I salute you!
Your special niece"

"Hey Phipps! You were a blessing to our unit for the time we had ya. Thank you for everything. I wouln't know where to start. No one thought for a second you wouln't come back. They said even after you were hit you were trying to warn others and tell them to take cover. Of course you would go out like a champ. You are a hero for life. I will remember you and so many others will also. Thanks battle."

"I participated in a march against the war in Iraq and was honored to hold a placard in memory of Sgt. Phipps. To his family, I express my sincere condolences on his loss. I also want to share my deep regret that Sgt. Phipps was sent to Iraq in a mission that was undermanned, underequipped and poorly planned. As an American citizen, I am ashamed and angry that our soldiers were, and still are, inadequately supported in their efforts."
Miriam of New Jersey

After the ceremony the sketches will be given to the immediate families of the Illinois soldiers. I would invite any friends or family members to come and honor these men and women from Illinois who have given their lives to our country. "My name is Cameron Schilling. I am a college student from central Illinois. I am the first generation of my family not to serve his country. I am extremely grateful for the sacrifice you and your loved one has given for the United States. I am disappointed by the way the news media has covered this war and the deaths of our youth. The media has stopped listing the names of the soldiers killed in Iraq and people only talk about the soldiers when we reach a specific milestone in deaths. If you just started watching the news today you would not even know there is a war going on. Partisan politics have replaced coverage of our young generation who have traveled to a foreign land in the name of the United States. Whether you believe the war in Iraq is wrong, right, justified or not everyone should pay even just a little more attention to what these young men and women are sacrificing. This is what I would like to do. I want to do my part in honoring these soldiers and their memories. Along with being a college student I am also a budding artist. I draw pencil portraits of local people in my community. I want to offer a pencil portrait sketch to the immediate family of every Illinois soldier killed in Iraq. Please contact me at cameronschilling84@hotmail.com."

"Whats up cuzz this is Tyshon speaking. I know it's going on two years sense you've been gone. Just thinking back on the last days before you left to go to war. You told me you have to go over there with a positive mind and you will make it. The last day I saw you, you said somethings to me as if you knew you were not coming back home. I ask you why you talking like you're not coming back. and you sad I didn't mean it like that. I looked at him real strong hugg him & said I love you cuzz come back. Ivory you know me and the family didn't want you to go and you told me this is your way out from the (ghetto) block we kick it on everyday. I miss you cuzz. See you when I get there. Rest In Peace."

We have called our display "Arlington Midwest" and it is located in Wisconsin Dells, WI.

"I was reading an editorial in today's Post Distpatch in honor of Memorial Day, read it if you can... Below it was a list of service members from Missouri and Illinois killed in Iraq, and skimming through them I caught my own last name. To be honest I didn't know Sgt. Phipps personally, but we shared a name. To be even more honest I don't believe in this war and I feel more effected by the bloodshed than usuial this evening by knowing this life ascribed a name the same as mine is gone forever, taken from his family; his abilities, talents and spirit removed from the world. And I must ask myself more strongly than ever, for what?"
