"My name is Joel Burge and I went to boot camp with Randy, He was my squad leader. I first met Randy in Portland OR. At a Double tree hotel the night before we were to swear in to the Marine Corps and leave for bootcamp. That night Randy and I shared dinner and talked about what bootcamp was gonna be like and how nervous we were. Once we arrive Randy and I found out that we were going to be in the same platoon together that platoon was platoon 3014 if I remember correctly. We were excited to be in the same platoon, I remember Randy's rack was directly acrossed from me in the squad bay so when we would "get on line" as they call it standing next to our racks at the position of attention. I would be looking directly at Newman he didn't make faces at me like I would do to him and try to get him to lose his composure and get him in trouble but he wouldn't flinch ever he was a stone cold Marine. I also remember him when we were doing our crucible he was pretty much carrying other marines that were having trouble and giving them words encouragement. Of course when we graduated bootcamp I shook his hand and we talk breifly and I said something like "we came along way" and he said "yep we are Marines now" and we were both extremely excited. The last time I saw Randy was probably around July 2005 in 29 palms California outside the "E club" it's a place to eat and shoot pool for non NCO's. We really talked for a long time about our upcoming deployments and what we have been doing and the last time we were home. I remember we talked for a good hour until maybe 11:00 pm so it was late. We wished eachother luck and said goodbye and that was the last time I saw him. Randy was always a really nice guy to everyone and I new he was a poster child for the Marine Corps he looked and acted the like a Marine from the first time I met him he really showed everyone that whoever raised him did a great job. I miss you Randy Newman. We all miss you."
