"Every day I wake up and mourn the loss of every soldier that serves in the military. None shadows my heart more than Jacob. I spent two years training at Ft. Hood with Jacob in my dismount squad. He was a loyal friend and quite possibly the best soldier I ever encountered. I am honored to have served with such a great person and friend."

"I just received my Hero Bracelet in the mail with Spc. Jacob D. Martir's name on it. I am overwhelmed with feelings of pride and sorrow. Pride for the young man who put his country before himself. I will always be grateful for his courage, bravery and sacrifice. Sorrow because a young man will never get to enjoy the freedom for which he so gallantly fought. I hope the world remembers you -- please know I will. You are not only on my wrist, but in my heart. Thank you, brave soul. May your family find peace. You are my hero. Thank you."

"To the family, friends, and loved ones of SPC Martir. My name is SSG Jeffrey Sampson. I was SPC Martir's team leader when I first reported to Ft. Hood in October of 2000 and I was his team leader through the battalion's deployment to Kuwait 2 months later. When I read about his death, it hit me very hard. I've lost several people I've known or were friends with but never anybody that belonged to me at one point or another. I know there are no words that can comfort you all, but know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. What I remember most about him is that he was always making somebody laugh and that he was the baby in my fire team. I'll miss him. I do have a picture on my computer of SPC Martir and another soldier in my fire team from our deployment to Kuwait in 2000 if anybody would like it. Feel free to email me jeffrey.sampson@us.army.mil or email me if you just want to talk or whatever, its ok."
