"Deryk was only in My platoon for the weekend. I chose the Marines with the weird names but come Monday the First Sgt in his wisdom transferred him and a few others to other platoons. We were in Ar Ramadi together and I hope his family and loved ones can take Comfort that he's really not dead he's just been Transferred because the Good Lord Chooses only the Best and Bravest to Guard Heavens gates."

"No one who ever knew Deryk could ever forget him - what a terrific kid from a terrific family who serves our Great God. And we will never forget that Deryk laid down his life for our freedom in much the same way Christ willingly laid down His life to give us freedom from death. Hallal family, you are very much loved and remembered along with Deryk, especially on this Memorial Day."
Jackie R. of Carmel

"Pam & Jeff,
I have struggled to find the words to write as tears run down my cheeks. First and foremost, I thank our Lord Jesus Christ for Deryk's life and ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. You both have been such an encouragement to me. I want to encourage both of you to keep the faith and continue to carry the message of freedom and salvation when God gives the opportunity. Your suffering will never be in vain. God is smiling at both of you and loves you very much. Keep the TORCH BURNING for Christ. God bless you and your family as you seek to serve HIM in this wonderful ministry. I love you both with all my heart"
Bob Zwart

"Deryk was a fine young man. It was encouraging to see how his maturity seemed to climax when he made the committment to serve. I remember getting a hair cut right before his funeral. As I was telling the Nora barber where I was going, he lowered his clippers, looked me in the eyes and said, he was one of my clients, we'll miss him. So will, and have, all of us.

Yet Deryk's death has perhaps done more for the Kingdom, than if he were still here. Thanks for your faithfulness, Jeff & Pam! You could have "about faced" and walked right away from God (and His people), if you gave into the flesh. There will be a happy reunion in Heaven!"
Tony Grahn & Family of Indianapolis

"Pam, you are magnificent. I heard you at the Howard Co. Vietnam Vets 25th and your words should ring throughout this country. The main stream press will never give you the notice you deserve. Bless you and thanks to your son for his devotion and service."

"My husband was very good friends with Deryk. They were in the same squad in Iraq, and I know without a doubt that Justin looked up to Deryk in the highest respects. From what Justin has told me, Deryk was a wonderful person. He included Deryk's initials in his memorial tattoo, along with one other particular Marine's initials. Deryk has made such an impact on my husband, and I can't wait to someday meet him in Heaven. We have a magnet with his picture on our fridge that the Hallal family had given Justin, and we pray for Deryk's family often."

My deepest sympathies. While words will not heal, please know your son died with the highest sense of honor and duty.

I was thankful that I returned safely from Desert Storm. Many were not so lucky. While life for us all will continue and for your family, never be the same, it may be of comfort to know that your son brought freedom to people who have for so long, suffered under a horrible dictator.

"My precious nephew Deryk,
What a brave young man you were and a delight to all that knew you. Though I mourn your loss with deep sadness, I am so proud of the sacrifice you made to keep the rest of your platoon safe. Your selflessness and your sense of duty prevailed when you gallantly fought to the bitter end to secure the area for your fellow marines. I will forever miss your bright sunshine smile and your neverending sense of humor. You were such a special part of my life for 24 short years. Each day brings a memory of you that I will forever hold dear. You were a ray of sunshine on a gloomy day. Though I grieve your loss everyday, I take comfort knowing that you have a mansion in Heaven. May you forever bring Jesus joy with your bright smile as you did for everyone here who loved you dearly. You will forever be our pointman, our hero.
With deepest love until we meet again,
Aunt Mindy"
