"Hello Ms. Farrah Gil, Daughter and Family. This is George Quiñones Jr, First Sergeant, United States Army, Retired. I was the assigned Casualty Officer that assisted Ms. Farrah and her Daughter during that most difficult time in their lives. Though I never personally knew Carlos, however, after caring for the Family I felt as if I knew him. I was the Acting Battalion Command Sergeant Major when we deployed the unit to Iraq, and it hurt deeply, how immediately and within weeks the Battalion had suffered a loss to the War effort. We went to Iraq, and after talking with the People in Iraq we knew that we had done the right thing in going there. We returned proud to have made a difference, and Carlos I know was proud to have contributed to the well-being of the People in Iraq. Unfortunately, today's Govt. Administration has made that effort a waste of priceless lives. Nevetheless, on this day for the past 10-years I always remember SGT Gil, may God almighty, have him in the palm of his hand, and may God's shadow always be upon Ms. Farrah, Carlos' Daughter, and his Family. God Bless Carlos, and the United States Army... 1SG Q, Memorial Day 2015"

"It's been over 7 years since I was in that same convoy with Sgt. Gil. Not a day has gone by where I don't think about what happened during that day and the day before where I met him at Camp Liberty during the convoy, he was a very laid back and down to earth NCO, his sacrifice will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Sergeant."
David K. Spellman, former 377th/11th HET Company of Kodiak, Alaska

"Sgt. Gil was an exemplary NCO, he always had time for the soldiers. He was one of the few that never let the rank make his head too big. I knew him as a peer and later as a leader; and though I was not on the convoy that day, news of your sacrifice instilled a sense of purpose that will never waver. Until that day."
David Grover of Madison, WI

"I served with Sgt. Gill at Ft. Riley in 2/2 Het. Gill was a soldier that always gave 110 percent at all times. We served a tour in Iraq in 2003 and he always went above and beyond the call of duty. He will be missed but his sacrifice for our country will never be forgotten. God is smiling because Gill is giving a 110 percent in heaven."

"I WAS IN THE HET BEHIND THE GUN TRUCK THAT DAY. CARLOS AND I HAD ONLY SPOKEN A FEW TIMES BEFORE HIS DEATH. HE WAS A GOOD MAN AND A GREAT NCO. WHEN WE PULLED HIM FROM THE TRUCK I PLACED A PRAYER CARD IN HIS TOP POCKET AFTER WE READ IT TO HIM. I THINK ABOUT HIM EVERYDAY. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE ALWAYS WITH YOUR FAMILY."

"I never want to forget the sacrifices of so many young men and women. I am so proud it makes me cry at times. I understand, in theory only, that war is a part of human nature but so is love and caring. I wish I could take your families and friends pain away but I can't. I am committed to loving ALL people, myself and our environment. I am committed to working on my happiness everyday because so many have died for my freedom to live my life. Thank you is not enough but it is all I have. All my love and respect. ogersteiner@yahoo.com

"Gil was a good friend. After all this time I still miss the conversations we had. I think of him all the time. I would give anything to sit and talk to him again. I know what must have gone though his head at his last moments, since I have been in two I.E.D. attacks. Since I have those experiences I fell that we will always have a unspoken bond. Farah, Sarah still misses talking with you. You and your family are very special to us. We love and miss you all."

"While I have never forgot my extended family the Gils. I have never let go of Carlos in my mind and heart. Crazy that Im in Iraq just returning from a convoy while Im typing this message years after you were taken from us. This guy and his family are a blessing to have shared memories with. I still remember when you moved to Florida and all the crazy times with Ernest, David and all the rest of the guys. Those days have long pasted but never forgotten. The month of Feb. will never be the same for me. Your Birthday and mine were only 3 days apart. I'll never forget the call I got from my brother Ernest the 19th of Feb in the Bronx thinking he was wishing me a early happy birthday but rather the sad news. This month is my 9/11. I will never forget.
To the Gils (Mom,Dad,Karla,Jose and Edger),
I love you guys and thank you for being that family all of us needed. I will miss you cousin.. ALWAYS!"

"I served with Spc. Gil in 2/2 Het. By far he was the nicest guys one would ever meet. The Lord will enjoy his company. He has a sence of humor like no other. On top of that he was honest and a hard worker. We could only pray for more soldiers to be like this man. May God Bless anyone who had the oportunity to know this great man!"

MSgt Greg Volkman of Travis AFB, CA

"To the family of Sgt Gil
Although I didn't have the honor of knowing Carlos in his daily life since we were not in the same unit, I was honored though to have been able to pay my last respects to him on 18 Feb 2005. I was part of the convoy security detail that took Carlos' unit to their destination that dreadful day. I was also part of the group of men that escorted and carried Carlos out of the wreckage and into one of his soldier's vehicle. I can tell you that carrying him away was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do but you must also know that the group of us who carried Carlos did it with every ounce of compassion, love and care that could be mustered in such a difficult moment, I also would want you to know that even though we were walking in that piece of highway half way on the other side of the world that we gave our utmost highest level of honor and respect to our fallen brother. On that day I found a new hero and his name was Carlos Gil. Escorting Carlos that day has become a memory that will remain with me until the day I die. To this day I still often think back on that day and wonder about his family and can't imagine what impact loosing Carlos must have had on you so on this Memorial Day I needed to share my heart with you and tell you that Carlos is not forgotten and never will be. Sometimes I feel as I did know him..........so his memory will always remain with me. "Semper Fi""

"Gil, im glad to see that so many people remember you. remember when we started basic training, and all you wanted to do was talk to your wife, and get some bacardi? we stayed in trouble man, but those were the days. when we got to AIT, we had alot of fun, waiting for orders to korea, when none of us really wanted to go. but we stuck it out and went anyway. then when we met back up in 2004 in tikrit, it was good to see a familiar face. but then you went to mannheim and i went back to graf. when i came back, i saw crump. you were the first name he said when we spoke. Me and Walker put you on our forearm in your memory, we will never forget you "G". I pray that your family is doing fine. I know that you're looking out for them, and the rest of us here. we miss you man, and hopefully we will meet again. much love carlos."
