"Thinking of you today, Mark. Remembering your sacrifice always."

"11 and a half years later and still a week doesn't go by that I don't think about you and how much I miss you. I'll never forget that day and, believe it or not, it still hurts just as much as it always did. Every year, on the anniversary of that day, my friends and I all go out and keep a seat open just for you, with your own drink and everything. I make sure everyone knows who you are.

But I still try to remember the good times too. Like meeting you for the first time in Okinawa after "the incident." I still tell people that story and it always makes them laugh. After talking to you only for 5 minutes back then, I remember thinking, "This is a solid dude. We're gonna be friends."

Until we meet again, brother."
Eric Melnyk, 3rd Bn/4th Marines of West Covina, CA

"11/11/2014 I remember this young man from his high school days. I was proud to be a part of the tribute his home town and high school paid him upon his ultimate sacrifice. Thank you, Mark. Never forgotten..."

"Mark,
Today I remember you and the day in Al Kut. I hope whereever you are you are having a beer and doing something fun. Those of us the made it do our best to keep your memory alive. We do our best to keep in touch with Mindy. I am sorry you are not here and I am sorry there was not more that we could have done in Al Kut. You are missed.

"Cpl. Evnin,
I was watching a documentary on the Military Channel recently about the drive to Baghdad in 2003 and learned of your sacrifice and how you stayed in the fight with your fellow Marines. I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. I served in the USMC back in the 80's and fortunately never saw combat but I'm proud as hell to be able to say that I am part of an organization that has men like you in it.

Semper Fi Devil Dog!"

"Hey brother, 9 years it has been, such a long time but does not feel that way. I remember the last time i saw you, we got to BS for a little and then headed back out but did not ever think that was going to be the last time i got to see or speak to you again. Miss you brother..."

"Proudly, you served and served well.

Sadly, you gave all and are gone now.

You contributions are valuable and memorable. For your family we all owe you in ways that can never be properly re-paid."

"Mark,
It has been way too long. The war in Iraq has ever so quietly come to an interesting conclusion, but you are not forgotten. Your mom is coming to visit us again, and it is amazing what type of spirit she has. I am on here (been awhile, I get it) because I am putting together a research project about Iraq and Afghanistan, for my middle school students. Part of the assignment has them researching a service member that gave their all. As I piece it together, I cannot stop thinking of you and how crazy it all is. It is amazing how many things are on the internet about you, and I hope one of my kids picks you to research. They would really get a glimpse of a really great guy. A guy who would most definitely be changing the world today..."
Josh Martin of Toledo, Ohio

"June 25, 2011. You are missed and never forgotten, Mark. You are an American hero and friend to our son, Eric. It still hurts. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." Psalm 30:5. Your morning came too early, Mark, to our way of thinking but we have the hope of Christ that we will see you at the east gate, as Eric has said. God be with and bless your family, especially your mom."

"I first read about you in Gunnery Sergeant Jack Coughlin's book. I was incredibly moved by your story. Everytime I look at the book I for some reason think of you. I stumbled upon this while looking for information on Captain Eric B. Das who was one of the few Air Force pilots who was killed in Iraq. I just happened to click on another picture and yours came up. I immediatly recodnized it and was brought to tears. I never knew you but I can't help crying like I knew you. Thank you for your sacrifice. God Bless and Sempher Fi Marine! HOORAH!"

I pray for you and our other fallen brethren every day. I want you to know that whenever I hear the word "hero", I immediately think of you. I hope to be able to shake your hand someday, Mark. It would be so much better to still hang out with you, but obviously... I have done a few presentations about Iraq for high schools, junior highs, and elementary schools--even did a couple at college. I am finishing up my degree in Paramedicine and just bought a condo and your picture will be the first thing that I bring in and hange up when I move in. "Hi Mark. I hope everything is going well. It's taken me almost two years to write this, and I still don't know what to say. I miss the good times we had together on the ski team in high school at South Burlington. THe snowball fights, you pretending to propose to me on the bus with an ugly skeleton ring, you shoving my brother into a locker and pouring water on him (which I am still mad at you for!). Anyway Mark, I hope Heaven is just as exciting for you as it was here on Earth. If you see Nick be sure to tell him I say "Hi" as well. I'm proud of you and I will never forget our great friendship. "I am in seventh garde student in a small village in WNY. We were working on a project for school on the people who have served for our country in the war. When i had seen your son for some reason i wanted to do my project on him. It must be really hard for you and it's hard for me knowing what has happen to evryone in his life. I know we all wish that our loved ones could come back, but they can't . I guess the only thing to do is remember what he did for us. I give you all my heart and soul!"

"Just incase you are wondering who I am, I am a seventh grade student at Barker Central School. I was on the internet looking at the people who have passed away and I came upon your loved one and I thought to myself he is so young. He was just growing up and he won't be able to grow up with you. I really do feel for you and I am hoping that everything for you will work out now that he is no longer here. Good luck with everything!"
Kasey of Barker, Ny

"I came across an old picture, tucked into the book I was reading while I was out in California visiting you in May of 2002. It's one of thoses photo booth ones, we had it taken at the Zoo. You wanted to rip it up, because you thought you were making a silly face, but I didn't let you. So I hid it in the book. When I got home I had thought I lost it, or you had gotten hold of it. I forgot my hiding place. I came across this past March, almost a year after your death, and now it is framed on top of my TV...when friends ask "who's that?" I enjoy telling them about my friend and what a wonderful person he was, and how he died serving this great country of ours. Mark...You are missed, and we'll never forget!
