"Who would have thought that we spend 13 weeks together as bunk mates for me to find out only a few month later what happened. We were a family, and the thought of you was in my head since that day, every day when I found out. God bless your family and guide and watch over them. Give them strength, you are a true hero."

"Hi Ruben,
A few years back, I was doing convoys to Baghdad and I couln't help but think of all the times you would ask me for candy in Mr. Colungas class,or your big smile. What i couldn't stop thinking of the most was the last November that I saw you alive. You see, I had just finished basic training and i stopped in El Paso before going to my first station and I saw you driving in your little red truck, I followed you for a while down Montana because i wanted to say hello so bad, i wanted to ask you how you liked the Army and I'm pretty sure you would of made fun of me for joining the Air Force, but I decided not to cause it looked like you were in a hurry. I was sitting in my post reading the news paper a few months later and there I saw your name and my heart instantly broke and i started hating myself for not stopping you that cold November day. Ruben i'm so sorry. Just so you know, I've been to Iraq three times, and I actually worked under the Army in one them and every time I drove the streets of Iraq, I thought of you, everytime, you never left my mind and you still don't. There's so many times I could have died and I don't understand why God allowed me to return to the states. There is a huge part of me that feels guilty..........but you know, maybe just maybe you were watching over me so that this girl from Polvo's made it back to her family. I love you Ruben and your sacrifice is the true testament of service before self. We all miss you and thank you, words will never truly define how greatful we all are. God must of needed a true warrior and who better than YOU"

""To pvt. estrella I still think about you and the other soldiers everyday. I remember the night before we left across the burm, there was a real bad sand storm and you were sent to get the part that one of the line unit had requested. You didn't know how to drive a forklift so instead you drug the part across the sandstorm. I asked why you didn't ask for help and you said you weren't going to wait for somebody and just did it. I knew right then you were a good man and good soldier. If their's anything I can say to the Family of Private Estrella is that they raised a good hardworking son. If I could I would have taken his place or any of the other soldier that were killed in our unit. I will never forget Ruben Estrella-Soto and I hope one day we will meet again."

"Ruben,

As a soldier our job is to live, fight and to die if called upon. It is hard for non-military people to comprehend this. As a retiree your sacrifice is the highest you can give your nation. Us veterans are proud of your loyality and commitment to your country. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family and love ones. I did not know you but it was important to attend your services. The heart does not care if you know someone. It cares that you cared for another person. May God Bless your Family. Always remeber the good in a person. Because the bad will only cause pain for all."

"THE FINAL
INSPECTION

The Soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, Soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"

The Soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, you Soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

"My name is Bruce Bradshaw, recently attended my sons graduation ceremony from U.S. Air Force Bootcamp at Lakeland Air Force Base in San Antonio Texas. While on the base I visited a small store that sold military memorabilia. I spotted a small plain stainless steel bracelet, the braclet has the following inscription "PVT RUBEN ESTRELLA-SOTO USA 23 MARCH 03 IRAQ" on the back of the bracelet the small letters inscribed "TX" I purchased the braclet and have worn it every day since. You see, I served in the United States Navy Presidential Honor Guard in Washington D.C. when Ronald Reagan was President, I did hundreds of funerals at Arlington National Cemetary for my fellow service men and woman, and no matter how many I performed, it always touched my heart and soul. I am proud that now my son has followed my footsteps and was selected to do the same job I had in the Navy except he is doing it for the Air Force. My reason for writing this is because I never had the good fortune to meet PVT Ruben Estrella-Soto but I know in my heart that he was a wonderful young man who gave the ultimate sacrifice for all of us who continue to live in this great land today. I have been wearing the braclet for about 5 months and every single day someone asks me what it is. I always smile and tell them that I am glad that they asked and I proceed to tell them what little I know about Ruben from what I have found on the internet. Everytime I tell someone the story of the braclet they are touched and I am able to continue to pass on his memory and sacrifice. I travel as often as possible and have had the chance to go to some beautiful places that I know Ruben never got to see, but I assure you that everyone of those places I have visited since putting on this braclet I have spoken to Ruben and I feel that in spirit he is with me. My heart goes out to Rubens family, I know you have suffered much from your loss, but I assure you that he did not loose his life in vain. I will wear this bracelet for the rest of my life and continue to tell the story of PVT RUBEN ESTRELLA-SOTO to everyone I meet. It is the least I can do to make sure that he will never be forgotten. GOD BLESS YOU MY FALLEN STAR

Even though I never met Ruben Estrella, I commend him for his courage and love for this country! A true hero, not only for us far eastsiders of El Paso but to the whole United States of America! "I am so sorry for the loss of such a young man. 18 years seems such a short time. Though the time was little, the sacrifice was enormous. Please know that many Americans feel these losses deeply even though we do not know these heroes personally. I will keep their names in my heart each day I live in this wonderful land."
Terri Curtis of Green Forest, Arkansas

"Although I used to talk to Ruben in our early high school years, we lost touch... and now, a year after our graduation, one of our classmates is no longer with us... who would have ever imagined! I regret not preserving the friendship we once had. So to the Mountain View class of 2002, let's not forget each other. We were a small class, let's remain united and strong. We'll miss you Ruben!"

"Ruben Estrella....The one and only. Out of everyone in the c/o 2002 he stood out above the rest. Always happy, always joking but never a dull star. Now that he is no longer with us I look back and remember him and realize that now that one unique star that used to shine bright now shines brighter. Ruben, may you rest in peace and I thank you for fighting for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
Diana C. of El Paso, TX USA

"It was a sunny warm day when the Mt. View class of 2002 walked the stage into the future. As uncertain as it was, thank you Ruben for making the ultimate sacrifice and securing the future of all your classmates. It was you who didn't think twice about enrolling into the service, leaving to a far away land and giving what God gave you back to us, all the citizens of this nation and this world. Thank you so much for sacrificing something that is so irreplacable, your humor, your laugh, and your life. You are a true hero not only in the eyes of your peers but in the eyes of your city, your native country, Mexico, and the USA. You will never be forgotten and your life will continue through all the future generations that you so bravely fought for. We Love You RUBEN!!!!"
Lupita of El Paso

"Ruben...
Not just any 18 year old boy, but a true hero for America and for those of us who will always hold you dear in our hearts. It's sad to know that being your same age, many of us take for granted the opportunity that God has given us to walk the very soil that you bravely and honorably fought for. I'd like to thank you for standing up for what you believed in, and never letting your guard down. I for one, will live the rest of my life thinking and appreciating the freedom that you so secured, and not let this go for granted. I know we didn't talk much in high school, but I certainly knew who you were and you knew who I was, and that's as close as I need to be to feel everything I feel towards you. For you, each day on I will take a deep breath and appreciate everything that surrounds me, because no matter what comes our way, I know you'll always be an an angel for Mt. View's class of 2002. When we look up above, at a shimmering night in El Paso, we know you're one of our brightest stars, and we'll always remember you. My heart and soul goes out to you and all the other American heroes we lost in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The day will come, when we meet again, and the day will come when we will all reunite to honor you and not let you go unremembered. I'm proud of you being a true American and for representing everything you believed in. Not only are you a hero, but you're a true role model for many americans, hispanics, El Pasoans, and most particularly our grauduating class. Ruben, WE LOVE YOU, and always will."
Sonia Garcia of Chicago, IL USA
