"it seems like yesterday that we met and hung out at your sis's house...with you showing me your lighter collection...laughing and having the best of times.but then it also seems like yesterday that the news was given to me that you were gone.I still feel that horrible pain in my chest and that unbearable thought of never getting to see that unforgetable smile of yours..I will carry you in my heart and wrap you in my thoughts until the time when i can hear that laughter and see that smile again.you will never be forgotten.i know that you are watching over your children and family...just like you did when you were here.through the hours, days, weeks, and months that turn into years you are missed.terribly.i love you stevie."

I remember his and Leanns wedding on Halloween and I remember how Steve always had a smile and a great spirit.I was away at school to be a police officer and serve my community the way Steve served our country when I heard of his death. I will now count on you Steve to be my angel while I am on duty. I will watch over your family here while you watch over us in heaven. You meant the world to so many people and losing you has changed our lives like we could never have imagined. I love you and miss you more than words could ever explain and I know that you hold the hands of our children and walk beside me as I try to raise them the best I can without you. "When I found out that Stevie passed away, I dropped to the floor and started crying. A part of me went with him. He was the sweetest and funniest guy I knew. He, along with my Dad (David L. Cooney) tought me a lot about life and how to have a good time. Stevie and my dad were like brothers. They were always together. When I was little, I told everyone that Stevie was my boyfriend. His nickname from me was, My Stevie, and I know now that he will always be my Stevie. I love him, he was like a second dad to me. Last time I saw him we all went to the bridge on 45 and jumped off. We always swam, went fishing, and had camp fires. I have nothing but happy and fun memories about him. STEVIE, I LOVE AND MISS YOU SO MUCH! You just made heaven a better place.
~~Love always and forever,"

"I don’t believe that we understand all that you gave, or how your sacrifice will affect the future for our sons or daughters. I believe you confronted the evil that has enslaved mankind throughout history, the same evil that many American soldiers have confronted in many battles.

I will teach my son and daughter of your sacrifice and your heroism.

"Stephen, we had so many memories together that I don't know what I am going to do without you in my memories from now on. You were such a wonderful, happy person. You found a way to make light of any and every situation (even when you shouldn't have) and we all knew that if we needed a little bit of a boost you were the one who could do it. You had such a wonderful personality - you were so loving and caring and stubborn (had to say it). My heart will forever belong to you. I will do my best to raise our children in a way that would make you proud. Please watch over us and walk with us as we learn to rebuild our lives without you. You are and forever will be our HERO! I love you Stephen (Pink E)! Love Always, LeAnn (Float E)"

"TO THE FAMILY OF PFC DOWNING.
I SERVED WITH YOUR LOVED ONE IN KOREA 2-17 FA. HE WAS IN A DIFFERENT BATTERY THEN ME BUT I SAW HIM ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS. I WAS WORKING IN THE BATTALION AREA AND I HAD HIM ON MY DETAILS ON A FEW OCCASIONS. HE WAS EASY GOING AND KNEW HOW TO BE A GREAT SOLDIER. I SAW ALOT OF POTENTIAL IN HIM. I WAS LOOKING FOR PICTURES OF HIM ON THE INTERNET AND I FOUND ONE OF HIM AND HIS BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN. IT GOT ME CHOKED UP, I ALSO HAVE TWO CHILDREN. I READ HIS COMMENTS THAT HE MADE ABOUT PROTECTING HIS FAMILY AND I HAVE MUCH RESPECT FOR THE WORDS HE CONVEYED. I HAD TO HOLD BACK MY TEARS. MAY YOUR FAMILY REMEMBER THE FATHER AND SOLDIER HE WAS. MOST IMPORTANTLY THE HERO. I WILL MISS YOU BROTHER."
