Fallen Heroes of Operation Iraqi Freedom

Remembering the servicemembers who died in the service of their country.

Army Spc. Jamaal R. Addison

22, of Lithonia, Georgia.
Killed when ambushed by enemy forces in Iraq. He was assigned to the 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, Fort Bliss, Texas. Died on March 23, 2003.

Like many young soldiers, Addison, who had a 2-year-old son also named Jamaal, was more interested in going to college someday than in fighting a war (although he supported it, says the minister at his family's church.) Just before he went into combat he called his wife, Tekla, and shared his fears with her.

Please send information, photos, and corrections for Army Spc. Jamaal R. Addison.

My name is Patricia Roberts, I am the mother of Spc. Jamaal R. Addison, the first soldier from Georgia to die in Operation Iraqi Freedom. I want to take the time out to thank each and every one of you that thought enough about my son to take out some time and write in this guest book. I could not explain what it meant to me and my family to hear from the people that served with my son during his career. We have been looking to hearing about pieces of his life that he himself never got to share with us. Such as the relationships he had with all of you.

I would like to be in contact with all that served with him, as well as all that lost family members from Georgia, for I am planning something very special that I would like for you to be a part of. Please contact me by email or website or phone me at 404-509-1001. Again I thank each and every one of you for all your kind words of encouragement and your prayers and support for his son Jamaal R. Addison II. I look forward to hearing from you. Take Care and May God Bless You All.

Many years have passed since you were taken away from us. I still think about you often. I miss all of the good times we shared from the time that we were about 10. I cherish those memories! I am still thanking God for allowing me the opportunity to have known you. Your spirit lives on in your son, and you know your mother keeps your spirit alive! Thank you for making the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live in freedom and peace! I love you, my friend!"

"My name is Glenn Johnson. I was once a member of the 507th Maint Co. I served with them from June 1995 - Oct 2000. Before I deployed for the beginning of the war in March 2003 at Fort Hood, TX I received the news about the 507th Maint Co. I cried and still cry today. I knew some of those soldiers and I'm glad that I met them and pray for the families. I will dedicate myself to teaching my children and grandchildren about the brave men and women of the 507th Maint Co. God Bless you all."
Glenn Johnson of Copperas Cove TX

"I don't watch the news much because it can be so negative but i caught the first few mins of it to find out the weather for tomorrow and was shocked to see a picture of Jamaal. I continued to watch only to find out of his passing. I actually went to Lakeside High school with him and though i didn't know him extremely well we had talked a couple of times, saw him at a couple of school get togethers. And he always came across as a soft spoken, down to earth intellectual. I guess his passing has affected me so much because I've never experience interacting with someone with such a good soul and then just a yr or two later hearing that that good soul is no longer here. To his son and daughter, your father was a really good person. I spoke with him only on a handful of occasions but in that short time I clearly saw his character and potential. Always remember that others thought very highly of your father. He is a hero and I honor and respect him. May God watch over his family and loved ones."

"JAMAAL- YOUR LIFE WAS SUCH A WONDERFUL GIFT THAT GOD GAVE TO US... A PRECIOUS GIFT THAT GOD TOOK BACK, AT A TIME THAT SEEMS SO ABRUPT AND INCONVENIENT... YET WE ASK? WHAT DISTANT SHORE OF PARADISE DO YOU NOW STAND UPON GAZING AT THE INFINITE BEAUTY OF THIS MASTERFULLY CRAFTED HEAVENLY PLACE? ARE THE GOLDEN STREETS REFLECTING BACK YOUR SHINING RADIANT PRESENCE AS YOU MAKE YOUR WAY ALONG WITH ALL THE OTHER JOYFUL SOULS IN A DAZZLING GROUP OF BLESSED SAINTS HAPPILY PRAISING GOD IN JOYFUL SONGS OF PRAISE? IS YOUR SOUL AT PEACE WHILE LISTENING TO THE SOOTHING SOUNDS OF ABUNDANT BUBBLING SPRINGS OF CLEAR COOL AQUAMARINE WATER FLOWING DOWN THE CENTER OF THE SHIMMERING STREETS OF HEAVEN? DO YOU STOP TO ENJOY THE SWEET REFRESHING FRUIT THAT IS GROWING FROM THE TREE OF LIFE? AS YOU MAKE YOUR WAY BLISSFULLY ALONG HEAVEN'S BOULEVARD, DO YOU STOP AT LENGTH TO GAZE UPON THE MAJESTIC SMILING FACE OF GOD, AND REALIZE IN UTTER JOY THAT GOD IS SMILING WARMLY BACK AT YOU! ARE THERE RARE BUTTERFLIES OF EVERY COLOR DANCING MERRILY ON THE SOOTHING BREEZES OF HEAVEN AS EXQUISITE MULTI-COLORED EXOTIC BIRDS ARE SINGING THEIR BEAUTIFUL MELODIES AS YOU WALK BELOW THEM? DO YOUR HEAVENLY EYES MARVEL AT ALL THE MAGNIFICIENT DESIGNS THAT ARE PERFECTLY IMPRINTED AND DELICATELY REPLICATED IN AND ALONG A GLEAMING ARRAY OF INTERLOCKING AND UPLIFTED GOLDEN ANGELS WINGS? DO YOU JOIN IN PRAISE, ALONG WITH THEIR MULTITUDE OF BEAUTIFUL VOICES, SINGING TOGETHER "HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, IS THE LORD ALMIGHTY, THE WHOLE EARTH OF FULL OF HIS GLORY"... WHILE NOTICING AS YOU SING, THE INCOMING MULTITUDES OF THE HOST OF HEAVEN THAT ARE BEING DRAWN TOGETHER, IN ONE VOICE, TO PRAISE AND TO MARVEL AT THE RADIANCE OF GOD'S GLORY? MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL AND ALL THE ELDERS FALL PROSTRATE BEFORE THE THRONE, WHILE HUNDREDS OF CHERUBS HOVER IN REVERENT FLIGHT, PLAYING MUSIC ON HEAVENLY GOLDEN HARPS. THE HEAVENLY HOST ARE ALL GLEAMING AS THEIR WHITE ROBES GLISTEN IN GOD'S DAZZLING HOLY PRESENCE. JAMAAL, YOUR HEART LEAPS FOR JOY, AS YOU REALIZE THAT GOD IS STILL SMILING AT YOU AS YOU MAKE YOUR WAY UP TO SIT AND TALK WITH JESUS UPON HIS THRONE WHICH MUST BE FOR THE THOUSANDTH TIME ALREADY. JESUS HAS SO VERY MUCH TO TELL YOU ABOUT, SO MANY BLESSINGS THAT HE WANTS TO SHARE WITH YOU! WHAT JOY YOU MUST FEEL WHEN YOU LOOK INTO JESUS LOVING EYES. OH SUCH UTTER JOY AND LOVE YOU MUST FEEL! DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT'S DAILY PRESENCE MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE LAUGHING DIZZILY? DOES HE BRING A CONSTANT SENSE OF EVER REJOICING AND GIDDINESS AS YOU JOYFULLY MEANDER ABOUT IN THIS GRACE FILLED AND GORGEOUSLY APPOINTED HEAVENLY PLACE? DO YOU WALK ABOUT IN THE COOL OF THE WONDERFULLY FRAGRANT GARDENS, WITH JESUS AND GOD THE FATHER AT YOUR SIDE IN THIS BEAUTIFUL WORLD WHERE NO WAR, NO TEARS, OR SHADOW OF SORROW IS EVER AGAIN TO BE CAST UPON THOSE WHO ARE SO FORTUNATE AS TO OCCUPY SUCH A MAGNIFICIENT EMERALD CLAD PLACE? DO THEY ASK YOU TO DESIGN WHATEVER COLOR THAT YOU WOULD LIKE THE SKY TO BE AS YOU STAND TOGETHER ADMIRING THE UTTER BEAUTY OF THIS HEAVENLY EDEN? OR... DO YOU DECIDE TO WALK ACROSS THE WATER OF LAKE PARADISE, JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN WITH THE LORD JESUS LAUGHING WITH YOU WHEN YOU GET TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LAKE? DO YOU SIT TOGETHER THERE AND ENJOY A PICNIC MADE FROM THE FRESH GRILLED FISH YOU REACHED DOWN AND SELECTED FROM THE ABUNDANT LAKE? ARE THE APOSTLES ALL GATHERED TOGETHER AS YOU WATCH JESUS BREAK A LOAF OF FRESH BAKED BREAD AND SAY A BLESSING OVER THE MEAL, SERVE IT, AND THEN ONCE FINISHED JESUS WASHES YOUR FEET, WHILE YOU SIT IN AMAZEMENT AND NOTICE THE GENTLENESS IN HIS STRONG HANDS? JESUS IS LAUGHING AND TELLING STORIES AS USUAL. DO YOU JAMAAL, FIND THAT YOU SPEND YOUR DAYS SITTING UP ON THE LUSH GREEN HILLSIDES WITH ALL OF YOUR FAVORITE FRIENDS, LISTENING TO ALL YOUR GREAT, GREAT, GREAT, GREAT GRANDPARENTS, TELLING THEIR STORIES ABOUT ALL OF THE MARVELOUS VACATIONS THAT THEY HAVE TAKEN IN HEAVEN. THEY ALL RECOMMEND AND TELL STORIES ABOUT THE AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL WATERFALLS THAT ARE IN A CORNER OF PARADISE THAT YOU ARE HOPING ON MAKING A VISIT TO SOON. THEY START LAUGHING WHEN YOU TELL THEM THIS, AND CLOSE THEIR EYES, AND YOU ARE ALL TRANSPORTED TO THESE SKYSCRAPER TALL WATERFALLS OF INFINITE BEAUTY IN A MICROSECOND OF TIME! THE NEXT THING YOU ARE DOING IS PAINTING THE WATERFALLS BESIDES LEONARDO DI VINCI...HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE PAINTING WITH THE MASTER? YOU BEGIN TO REALIZE THAT YOU ARE GIVEN WHATEVER YOUR HEARTS DESIRE IS WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT IT HAS BEEN ALL DESIGNED FOR THE PURPOSE OF GOD'S GLORY WHICH YOU REALIZE HAS ALWAYS BEEN YOUR TRUE SOURCE OF JOY! YOUR FORMER LIFE WAS JUST A FORETASTE OF ALL THE BOUNTIFUL BLESSINGS AND GIFTS THAT WILL BE BESTOWED UPON YOU JAMAAL IN HEAVEN. TELL US JAMAAL, ARE THERE MANY MISSION OPPORTUNITES TO GO TO OTHER GALAXIES TO BUILD SUMMER PALACES FOR ALL THE POOR WHO PRESENTLY LIVE IN SQUALOR ON THE EARTH? IF YOU HAD A CHANCE TO TELL US JAMAAL, THAT IS, THOSE OF US THAT ARE STILL LISTENING DOWN HERE ON EARTH (IN OUR VERY LIMITED HUMAN CAPACITIES), WOULD YOU TELL US THAT WHAT WE CAN WE TRULY OFFER YOU AS A MEMORIAL TO YOU, IS THE JOY OF SHARING THE GOOD NEWS FOR JUST A MOMENT ABOUT GOD'S INFINITE LOVE AND BLESSINGS WITH OTHERS DOWN HERE ON EARTH, WHO STILL FIND THEMSELVES CONSUMED WITH HATRED AND RAGE AND BITTERNESS AND A SEEMINGLY ENDLESS TASTE FOR PRESTIGE AND POWER, THAT IT IS OUR SACRED DUTY, TO WARN THEM OF THE ABSOLUTE AND UTTER FUTILITY OF IT ALL! WOULD YOU WANT US JAMAAL, TO TEACH EVERYONE THAT WE MEET, THAT WE ALL HAVE SUCH AN INCREDIBLE CAPACITY IN WHICH TO OFFER OUR LIVES AS A SWEET AND FRAGRANT SACRIFICE TO GOD, BY LIVING OUR LIVES IN LOYAL SERVICE TO OTHERS, IN NOT ONLY THE BIG THINGS LIKE DYING FOR OUR COUNTRY, BUT IN HELPING A NEIGHBOR THAT IS IN NEED, BY BEING THE HANDS AND EYES OF CHRIST, AND PRAYING FOR OUR ENEMIES AND THOSE THAT MAY PERSECUTE US. TO REPLACE HATRED WITH COMPASSION AND KINDNESS. TO OFFER THE PEACE OF GOD, AND BESTOW THE LOVE OF GOD TO OTHERS BY TAPPING INTO GOD'S UNENDING MERCY AND GRACE. TO GIVE OURSELVES AS GOD'S SERVANTS WITH THE HOPE OF IMPROVING THE LIVES OF THOSE ALL AROUND US. YES JAMAAL, WE WILL REMEMBER TO PRAY FOR YOUR FAMILY AND FOR YOUR WIFE AND LITTLE SON JAMAAL. MAY GOD BESTOW UPON THEM A LIFETIME OF PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, SPIRITUAL, AND FINANCIAL BLESSINGS. MAY GOD HEAR OUR PRAYERS AND BE PLEASED TO ANSWER THEM ALL. AMEN. P.S. THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON YOU HAVE GIVEN TO ALL OF US JAMAAL IS THIS... "TEACH US TO NUMBER OUR DAYS ARIGHT, THAT WE MAY GAIN A HEART OF WISDOM" (PS. 90:12)
YOU BLESSED US IN YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY... THANK YOU... NOW BE BLESSED!"

NOW I AM A DEKALB POLICE OFFICER AND SOMETIMES ON DUTY I STOP BY HIS MEMORIAL IN THE BROOK RUN PARK IN DUNWOODY AND GIVE YOUR SON A SALUTE. "I am the mother in law of a fallen soldier who was killed by enemy attack on 4/12/05. He left behind a 4 month old daughter who looks just like him. He was deployed from Ft. Stewart, Ga. on 1/22/05 when his baby was just 6 weeks old. The miracle was that she was born 6 weeks early and got to see her daddy for that time. I know that the two of you are walking on the streets of gold that our Lord has planned for each of us who knows him. Through all this pain, that is the one thing that has gotten me through this hard time. My heart and prayers are with this family. I know that time heals all wounds, but mine still hurts so I share my love and sympathy with all of you."
Bobbi Francabandera of Cape Coral, Fl

"All we have left after the loss of our soldiers lives, is the precious memories and the knowledge that they are the brave, honorable ones that this country is so proud of! May God bless your family and may little Jamaal always know how brave his daddy was. From the family of Tracy Laramore, fallen soldier 3-17-2004."

"On this Memorial Day we remember the fallen heroes of our country. Hero is one of the best words that could be used to describe these men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice. These heroes could also be described as fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, uncles, aunts, and friends. I would like to call Jamaal Addison a friend. A true friend. He was a hero long before his life was called. I served with him in Korea. Addison took me under his wing so to speak. He help me transition into the company. He taught me many things. He help to teach me how to do my job and the in and outs of living in Korea. He did a lot of things for me that were not required of him. I had very little money when I was in Korea. I never asked Addison for anything but he gave. It was because he cared. He would cook food and share it with me. I could not get haircuts but I knew how to cut hair so Addison gave me his clippers. He helped me find a cell phone so I could call home. He did not have one single obligation to do anything for me. I knew him in passing when we were in AIT. He was a few classes ahead of me. The only common bond we shared before our friendships was the fact we were from the south. That is how our friendship grew. We would often talk of our families and home. I know how excited he was to get back home after his tour was complete because he truly loved his family. To his family I would like to tell you that you can be very proud of Addison. He was a special human being. Special people touch the lives of others around them whether it is here at home or thousands of miles away in another country. He touched my life. Sometimes you take things for granted. When I heard of his passing I regretted the fact that I did not take the time to truly thank him for all he did for me. I would like to take this time to thank his family for his acts of kindness and caring. I feel like he was my family. My brother in arms, my brother in hearth, and my brother in God. I hope my words have brought some amount of honor to his life …Addison I will not forget you HERO. I hope your legacy will allow me to be a help to someone in their time of need."

I was that which others did not want to be.
I went where others feared to go,
And did what others failed to do.
I asked nothing from those who gave nothing,
And reluctantly accepted the thought of
Eternal loneliness…should I fail.
I have seen the face of terror;
Felt the stinging cold of fear;
And enjoyed the sweet taste of a moments love.
I have cried, pained, and hoped…but most of all,
I have lived times others would say were best forgotten
At least someday I will be able to say that I was proud of what I was…

"Thank you Jamaal for defending the freedoms we all cherish and for taking the fight to the cowards who would do us harm. Your family is very proud of you as we all are. You will be remembered each day we raise our flag in the front yard. From a very grateful American family."

"Everyone has a purpose. Some more noble than others. Yours great. Thank you for your sacrifice. You lived and died to give us freedom...to touch your mother's heart and bring out the soldier in her. To leave a foundation to help our youth in this country (always the greater good)...to fight in the struggle for democracy right here at home. Your name will forever be associated with that effort. Your life and death have meant much to the world, more than you knew they would. You brought out the soldier in many of us. You've shown us the courage to fight (and die if we must) for the principles and values we hold dear. And my prayer is that we will always honor your life, your sacrifice. That we will win the battles for freedom that you gave your self to. Again Jamaal, Thank You. God Bless and Keep You. Watch over your mom and your wife and son. They are strong for you. Guide them with wisdom from Heaven as they further your life's contributions.

-May your sacrifice please our God and our ancestors forever. Amandla!"

"I had the opportunity to watch the documentary, Strong at the Broken Places. I want to thank the family of Jamaal R. Addison for sharing your story with America. It is so important that we come to understand just how great the cost is to provide the blanket of freedom that we enjoy in this great country! Even more important that we never forget. I was deeply touched by this documentary. As a military spouse, my heart and prayers are with your family. The one thing that I know for sure is that Jamaal is with you every day watching over you from above. He will be a guiding strength to his fellow soldiers still fighting on the ground, wherever they may serve! I am sure he touched many lives and he has now touched a nation! Actually more than one. He helped to make a lives of others in another country other than his own, better. We can only pray that one day Iraq can live in a peaceful and free nation. I believe that every human being on the planet should have that right. The greatest way that we as a nation can honor your son and all of our fallen soldiers is to support the men and women still on the ground. By supporting the families of those who are grieving the loss of a family member and by supporting the families of soldiers currently fighting or who will be called into combat. I know you must see the light of Jamaals eyes sparkle in his son! What a blessing to know that little Jamaal is his daddy's greatest legacy. May your family find the faith and the strength to endure. Our family is deeply sorry for your loss, please know that we are grateful to your son for giving the ultimate sacrifice. Because of this we enjoy the freedom in this great nation that we do.Though it is never easy to lose a loved one, especially so young God must have had a more important mission on the other side that only Jamaal could fullfil. He will be waiting for you and guiding his little boy from above. May the blessings of heaven be poured down upon you. God bless your entire family and may He continue to bless this great nation."

Carol moved, and we were out of touch since just after Christmas. We were so sorry to hear about Jamaal. We read all of the accounts we could find about him online, wanting to know more about him and the family.

My husband served in the Navy on the USS INDEPENDENCE, and military families never forget all the other military families that come afterward. We are family forever.

We send you our love, hugs, and prayers. We will always remember Jamaal, and look forward to meeting him, and the rest of your family when we all catch up with him in heaven.
